TIL that the Dragon’s Breath, the world’s second hottest pepper, was developed for its essential oil having potential as a skin anaesthetic, and later cultivated by a breeder who had not planned to breed the chili for record heat, but rather was trying to grow an attractive pepper plant. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dra…

What is the hottest pepper to grow in Mediterranean climate?

tl;dr: In the title.

My parents live in Southern coast of Turkey and they grow lots of pepper and other veggies themselves. When I moved to US, they asked for seeds for some hot peppers. Not wanting to kill them accidentally, I went with a mild selection: jalapeno, orange habanero and cayenne. However, Habanero didn't really develop properly (they were much slower than others) and once they did, out of many roots (maybe ~20, under different conditions), they only got a total of two peppers. As it is known, habanero loses many of the flowers but we didn't expect it to be this much lol. Japaleno and cayenne aren't really very spicy anyways so this time they want something hotter.

They eat the hottest peppers they could find with ease and no regret so I want to get them what they want. But since habanero attempt was not very successful, I wanted to ask you guys about your opinion about which type to get. (They are very well-trained and experienced about agriculture and soil so I am assuming habanero wasn't a very good match with the climate and trying to find something that would work there.)

Let me give you some more background: The climate is Mediterranean as I said; in particular, very hot (40C+) and dry summers, very rare (at most once or twice each year) freezing temperatures in the winter. Also, they have a garden and a large balcony with lots of peppers and other stuff; even part of our living room is full of plants lol.

I am currently thinking of ghost pepper, Carolina reaper and Trinidad Scorpion but I just know that these are super hot, I don't know if they will grow there. I figured I should get as much as possible to make sure at least some of them grows well there. So what are your suggestions?

Sorry for the long post; I appreciate any recommendation!

My current lineup. Dave's is the hottest but I reserve that to the pepper extract category, which is an unfair advantage in my opinion. I dont think it's great on it's own but better as an additive. The Melinda's and Tropical Pepper were by far the best new additions, both great heat and flavor.

What is the Current Official/Unofficial Hottest Pepper In the World

After looking online it seems that the Apollo is the current record holder. However, until just a few minutes ago it was my understanding that Pepper X was the record holder and up to a few weeks ago it was Carolina Reaper. Point being, every time I think I've discovered the current record holder I find some obscure article which states there's a new record holder. With that being said, what is the current record holder and where can I purchase the seeds from a reputable distributor without GMOs? Thank you :)
