A list of puns related to "Psycholinguistics"
Hi everyone, I am not sure if this is the right subreddit to ask this and I apologize if this is the wrong place, but a friend of mine has received a job offer to setup their lab at an R1 institute doing psychology of language research. My research background is in biology so I don't have much insight on this. They were wondering if there are any pros and cons of considering brain vision EEG systems for their lab. This is the system that they were trained with, but they wanted to know if there is anything else that they need to consider. They do adult research and look at how people processes sentences like "I spread the butter with a knife." versus "I spread the butter with a sock." ( I hope I got that right :) Ultimately, they are looking at how people process words as they unfold in a sentence). Any advice?
Hello,
Keith is my name, and I am a PhD researcher at Maynooth University`s Department of Psychology in Ireland. I am looking for people to participate in a language-related experiment that is running online, which takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. The only criteria are that participants are aged between 18-55, speak English as a first language, and have no severe visual or neurological issues. The experiment has also been approved by Maynooth University`s Research Ethics Subcommittee (SRESC- 2021- 2420742). I would be very grateful to anyone who could participate, as I missed out on quite a bit of time due to lockdown restrictions.
Note, the experiment will only work on a laptop or PC, and it is a behavioural experiment that requires quick responses to stimuli that appear onscreen. Thus, it is best taken in a quiet environment. Feel free to contact me privately after the experiment if you`d like to know exactly what was being tested.
Thank you,
Keith.

Hello! :-) iβm a fourth year student, currently working on my thesis, where a part of it focuses on semantic richness and how it affects spelling. I was wondering if anyone knows where/how I can find norms for different semantic richness domains? Specifically, Iβm interested looking at number of features, number of semantic neighbours, imageability, and emotional valence/arousal. Thanks so much for the help in advance!
There is a proof in a relatively famous paper in psycholinguistics (Levy, 2008) that invokes a KL divergence between discrete distributions p and q that do not seem to be defined over exactly the same space (p's domain is a proper subset of q's). Am I misunderstanding the proof, or is it wrong?
For context, Levy is considering a situation where people have probability distributions defined over linguistic constructions, where each construction is consistent with exactly one sequence of words (but the reverse is not true: one word sequence is consistent with many constructions). Every time a word is encountered, people update this distribution over possible constructions. The contribution of his paper was to show that the KL divergence (distribution after seeing the word || distribution before seeing the word) is equivalent to the surprisal of the word under the old distribution. This is his proof, and this is my problem with it.
I know this class is highly sought out and people probably donβt plan on dropping it, but does anyone know if he lets on anyone from the waitlist to go over the 25, or if the waitlist moves at all?
I know there are some recommended books in faq, but I am looking for more up-to-date books. Are the works of tomasello, zoltan torey, steven pinker still valid? I heard the language instinct is outdated?
But there is a certain random subset of people I have sometimes texted with whose punctuation makes no sense. They arenβt from a particular dialect or socioeconomic stratum, theyβre often somewhat educated or well off. Itβs not a second language issue because even if it is more common among second language speakers their patterns donβt correspond to conventions from their L1βs written standard at all, and they have the same problem there. They may even spell everything correctly and use decent grammar. But the punctuation is... apparently bizarrely random. And itβs often hard to see the thought process behind their choices. What,, is..going on I donβt , understand ?
But I do note that such people seem to have what I perceive to be some similarities of personality or intellectual ability in certain specific ways. But I also donβt want to jump to conclusions. Does anyone know any research about this, or on whether it correlates to particular personality types or conditions (I recently saw a post on here about how writing style and personality disorders can correlate, for example), and how their thought process with regard to punctuation even works? (Iβd almost want to ask some of them but this wouldnβt be very polite.)
DISCLAIMER: So I donβt want this to come across judgemental or prescriptivist, and this relates very specifically to the punctuation of a particular writing system (that of English) rather than any natural language as such, but I think the question is still valid.
And the rules of punctuation can be subtle and hard, and differ from standard language to standard language even within those that use the Roman alphabet. But even then Iβd expect the βwrongβ choices to make some intuitive sense, or for them to avoid punctuation altogether. Children make grammatical errors that make sense and are consistent in their own way. This seems entirely inconsistent.
In every study that I read on language processing (by humans) conducted with online methods, I see that they analyze the reaction/reading time data with R rather than SPSS. Is there a particular reason for that?
