What distinguishes psychedelics, dissociatives, and deliriants from one another?

I know in my mind what the answer is, but I recently had a hard time articulating it. I would liken a deliriant intoxication to an extremely strong schizophrenic episode, but that being said, at high doses, dissociatives as well as psychedelics could definitely be described as β€œpsychotic” as well, especially when there is the perception that you have encountered entities. This is what gives me a hard time differentiating the three categories verbally. A psychedelic and dissociative experience are not dissimilar consciously, particularly at low doses. I’ve read that the K-hole brought on by ketamine is quite psychedelic and that the ego death of high-dose Psilocybin is quite dissociative. What really sets these three apart from one another?

(xpost r/drugs) Anonymous survey for people who have experience with psychedelics, dissociatives, and deliriants

Hello all,

I've recently designed a little anonymous survey to facilitate a project I've been brainstorming on for a little while. The basic idea is to gather data based on people's subjective experiences with hallucinogens, compare each substance's average reported recreational potential and depth of experience, and graph the results for each substance on this chart to make for easy comparison between the fun and profundity of different substances.

Here's the survey! (should take no more than five minutes to complete)

The survey includes many mainstream hallucinogens and also some of the more common RC's. The results could prove helpful for researchers in comparing the subjective experiences among mainstream chems and their novel counterparts, such as psilocybin mushrooms vs. 4-AcO-DMT.

I'll admit, this approach is less than completely scientific, and its purpose is as whimsical as it is academic, but nevertheless, the results should be pretty interesting. When I publish the completed chart, I don't intend for it to be used as a be-all-end-all guide for exactly how fun or deep a trip should be; instead, I want it to be a fun, rough reference for how a trip might go. I'm hoping that with the wealth of subjective experience shared among all of you lovely humans, we can accomplish this :D

Is Salvia a Deliriant, Psychedelic, or Dissociative?

I've heard it described as all three; it seems to be quite controversial. From my sole experience with it, it seemed more psychedelic than anything else, but it seems like this is not always the case.

Can persisting psychosis occur from psychedelics and deliriants without dormant schizophrenia?

Psychosis can happen when tripping but could it remain after the trip when you’re sober even if you weren’t a dormant schizophrenic? If people can get HPPD and depersonlization disorder for long periods after tripping is it really that unresonable that a person could ”get schizophrenia” from a large enough dose of psychs or deliriants?

I don’t know if this is the right sub since people can be very biased here but i appreciate any feedback

Many here seem to utilize natural, or at least classical, psychedelics. Does anyone here use dissociatives for introspection and spiritual understanding?

I have found dissociatives to make me take in my surroundings and thoughts in a way that feel more β€œelementary” or β€œprimary”….

For instance, imagine an idea is represented as a sphere. If the sphere was then simplified to the point of an octagon, how would that idea translate back? It completely changes the way I process thought, and I feel it brings a much needed perspective in that aspect.

The sensation of entering a large space on psychedelics and dissociatives

I often get a sensation of entering a massive space when im tripping very hard with my eyes closed. As if my eyelids faded away to reveal a different world, a giant void. I came up with a retarded theory about it while on drugs, but its fun as hell to think about.

String theory and its derivatives predict multiple small dimensions within our large 3 dimensional world. Tiny realms of which forces can interact with. I wonder now if consciousness, the observer (not the mind, personality or ego), is some sort of quantum form made up of particles that interact with our brain, in order to produce subjective experience from our mechanical, physical experience. This form would be extremely small, and resides within these pocket dimensions inside our 3d space. Not one that interacts with space itself but simply one that allows us to experience the senses of our meat bags. When one is on drugs, disconnected from the sensations of our meat bags, we begin to retreat back towards this primal form, our "souls" if you will, and experience the subtle interactions of forces between this soul and 3 dimensional reality. Interference patterns and symmetries leading to geometric visuals, including the sensations of leaving and going somewhere else, turning into geometric patterns, etc.

What the fuck am i saying? No clue. But thinking is fun.

Best hallucinogen category, Phenethylamine’s, tryptamine’s, dissociative’s or deliriant’s ?

My preferred category is tryptamine’s but I have the most experience in tryptamine’s

Phenethylamines can be fun but the visuals are all very similar and they tend not to have as much headspace, that being said I still rate 2cb, bromo dragonfly, mescaline, MDMA, MDA and others. If it wasn’t for MDMA I would prefer dissos

Tryptamine’s are the best imo with psilocybin, LSD, DMT an all the other elites. They provide the the most intense psychedelic experience and are best for self reflection and finding new perspectives, I almost see them non recreationally as I find them to intense for recreational environments

Dissos are unique but there’s not very many of them available, nos is an all round insane especially when combined with other stuff and Ket is pretty fun. I think dissos are best combined with other substances though, not to say that on their own their lack lustre but that their full potential is when combined

Deliriant’s are kinda shit (accept ambien that’s kind off fun but more of a Benzo) although they still provide insane experiences but have too many negatives comedowns, dry mouth, bodyload, confusion, dysphoria, etc. Although I’m sure some people some people enjoy them (mostly people who can’t get real psychs tho)

Also what does Slavia fit into ? And is there a fifth sub category of hallucinogens ? as I consider cannabinoids to be hallucinogens

Thanks for reading

Dissociative drugs are like a psychoactive sampler--you get dissociated from the alcohol-like effect, you get euphoric from the MDMA-effect, you trip and hallucinate from the LSD/shrooms-like effect, and can experience delusions from the deliriant-like effect.

>Cashier: "Hello, welcome to Drug Hut! What would you like to try today? Some alcohol? MDMA? Psychedelics? Deliriants?"

>Customer: "Hmm, I don't know, they all sound like a good time... can't decide. Any way to try them all?"

>Cashier: "Sure, here's a sampler! One Dissociative coming right up!"

Disclaimer: Dissociatives aren't actually like a full combination of all the effects of the category of drugs I've listed. It's more like you just get the good traits from each of them, combining into one hell of a weird but awesome ride. It shares many similarities with many other drugs but it's definitely a very unique experience.

Are deliriants and dissociatives respected as psychonautic drugs?

Personally, I absolutely love deliriants and dissos. When it comes to dissos I only really have experience with ketamine (apparently cut with a lot more oxy than k, it was really sus, a one time experience though) and LOTS of experience with DXM. As for deliriants, I've taken full blown delirium doses of DPH and doxylamine (a lot more than any person should in a life time, I will admit), while taking lucid dream-enduring doses of datura here and there.

The reason I ask this is because I often find users of psychedelics generally either hate any other drug except for weed or are poly substance users who don't give a fuck anyway. Since I really like this community and the idea of shamanism and being a psychonaut in general, I wanted to find out what this community thinks. Would you guys use these types of hallucinogens every once in a while for the psychonautic experience?

I'm predicting that if anyone actually does say yes, they'll probably say that about dissos. I completely understand why deliriants are generally hated, but I do believe when done right they can be a nice mind fuck and actually pretty fun. I look forward to the conversations this post will start.

Why DPH (or other deliriants) as opposed to psychedelics?

Hi there, not trying to disrespect you, I do a lot of psychedelics and as a result people shun me too, I’m just curious as to why someone would choose to do a deliriant over a psychedelic?

Is the experience itself actually enjoyable? It it just a temporary escape? Is there any actual purpose you can assign to your experience?

Are there any noids that definitely have visuals and psychedelic like effects? In the sense of it not feeling just like weed (i never did any noids and i don't plan to I'm just asking this question out of curiosity) but that they feel more strange, psychedelic or dissociative, maybe even deliriant like properties? Whatever that may be, i have no experience with them.

Strong psychedelics like DMT, 5-meo-dmt etc. are supposed to actually take you to another world/dimension that exists but we can't be aware of it sober. Why don't people say the same about deliriants?

I have always wondered that. From a pharmacological standpoint, most psychedelics, including the spirit/God molecule ones, are 5-HT2A agonists and deliritants are anticholinergics. Why is it that people who have smoked DMT and other strong psychedelics claim that the place it takes you in is real while the hallucinations produced by deliriants are just a brain thing? Technically, if a different frequency is needed for our brain to be aware of certain things that we can't be aware of sober, then the spiders, shadow people etc. that people see on deliriants could also be real and the deliriant just gives your brain the ability to see/feel it just as people who smoke DMT claim... this never made any sense to me... is DMT just producing a sense of awakening maybe when in reality it's just messing with brain chemistry and therefore producing weird psychedelic effects???
