Population 436. Anyone else pleasantly surprised by it?
Saw it on Amazon Prime, didnβt do any IMDB research, just turned it on and I was rather impressed. Clearly nothing special, obviously a low budget, but greater than the sum of its parts. Acting wasnβt great, but it wasnβt atrocious either with an interesting plot. Very uneasy feelings throughout, and a solid ending. Has anyone else watched it?

I watched "Population 436" (2006)
Every day in October for 30 days I'm watching a different scary movie, this year exploring the theme of horror stories set in small towns.
If you watch the show βTwin Peaksβ--which, yes Internet, I gather you have--youβll notice a sign in the opening credits advertising a population of 50,000 people. Vulture notes that originally David Lynch wanted it to be just 5,000 but the network interfered, believing that viewers would not relate to such a small community.
Having grown up in a town of pretty much exactly 5,000 people myself, I found this anecdote incredibly amusing and, weirdly, vindicating--I donβt much relate to places that small either. But I guess I didnβt know how good I had it in those days, because here we have βPopulation 436β to teach me that there could always be less to work with.
In this 2006 un-thriller by TV director Michelle MacLaren (who has a soon-to-be-released film called βCowboy Ninja Viking,β also the name of a very short-lived paper-rock-scissors variant developed in the waiting room of my most recent job interview), the small town in our small town horror is Rockwell Falls, where the population is--and for over 100 years running has remained--exactly 436 people.
Ohhh, so itβs just like the title, I get it.
Jeremy Sisto (who was the hands guy in βMayβ and also the not-quite incest brother from βCluelessβ) is a census worker who shows up to...manually count everybody in town, it seems like? Pretty sure thatβs not how that usually works, but then Iβm also pretty sure the movie doesnβt really give much thought to it and itβs just a flimsy pretext for anyone to have to care about this one townβs population, so fine. Anyway the first thing he runs into when he crosses the town line is Fred Durst.
...no, Iβm not kidding. Actual Limp Bizkit headman actual Fred Durst actually has a prominent supporting role in this actual movie.
I guess if youβre not a Millennial of a Certain Age you will not appreciate just how big of a star Durst was only a few years before this. And also just how big of a star he definitely wasnβt by the time 2006 rolled around. I honestly didnβt recognize him, because thinking about Limp Bizkit in 2020 is like Obi-Wan thinking about the Clone Wars during his latter Tatooine days--possibly even the same number of people died in both of those conflicts, I dunno, Iβd have to check.
Anyway, census dude conducts a really inefficient investigation, and of course the town is creepy and insular and way too friendly

It boggles my mind for a few days now. Why is it that the population of this small town is only 436? According to my late deceased cousin before he was found dead in his bathtub, it has been 436 residents for the last 100 years.
