I have a medical condition that causes my hands to constantly shake. I've recently gotten into drawing but I can't sketch anything properly because my hands are constantly moving. I've noticed that drawing on the glass screen of the iPad makes it even harder to try and keep my hand somewhat steady compared to a regular sketchbook (my hand still shakes with a sketchbook. Just not as much.)

Also, I've heard that Paperlike ruins the nub of an apple pencil much quicker. It took me a while to save up enough money to buy an iPad and apple pencil. I really don't want to spend more if I can avoid it.

I am a master's student in Taiwan who has been sensitive to the blue light from the monitor. Using computers or phones emitting light in the evening causes me hard to fall asleep. Most of the time, I use them in the daytime. But sometimes, I have to use the computers in the evening to finish the assignments or search for documents.

I found that these two monitors do not emit any light! And I am very interested in investing in one. I will use it for web browsing, reading lecture notes, papers, and pdf files, writing, coding (sometimes). I use Mac OS. I am aiming at a monitor not a tablet, since sometimes I code, and it's efficient for me to work with computers. I do not need the front light or the touch function.

The price of Paperlike HD 13.3 is about the same or slightly cheaper than Boox Mira, if I bought it directly at jd.com with coupons. Which one do you recommend in my case? I hope that longevity of the monitor can be as long as possible.

Dasung Paperlike HD:

• Pros: They said with 8 hours per day of texting/web browsing, it can last 3~5 years. The product has been developed for many years. Seems to be more stable. The black seems to be darker than Mira.
• Cons: Seems to be not as portable as Mira. No agents in Taiwan. If I need to repair it, need to send it back to Mainland China and may induce taxes.

Mira:

• Pros: Portable. There are agents in Taiwan, will be easy to repair. New (?). There might be firmware updates in the future to provide a better experience.
• Cons: Not sure about the longevity. The product is quite new.

I have a disease that makes me intolerant of ordinary digital screens and hypersensitive to digital flicker.

So I would like to buy an e-ink monitor so that I can perform computer tasks and watch videos again. As a result, I hesitate like many between the Onyx Boox Mira and the Dasung paperlike HD.

Originally I wanted to buy the Boox Mira but I saw flashing on this one in this test video (at 2min 20s): https://youtu.be/sGHJlpT3P9M

Onyx boox told me that the flickers disappeared completely when increasing the refresh rate (thus in speed or in video mode). However, we can clearly see on the video that the flickering is present even in video mode (4min 40s) and in speed mode (7min 03s).

So here are my questions:

1. Are these flickers present on your boox Mira in speed or video mode?

2. Does Dasung paperlike HD have flicker like mira on video?

3. As I absolutely can't stand digital flicker, would you advise me to buy a boox Mira or a Dasung paperlike HD?

Paperlike 253 just came in from SOLComputer. Works perfectly on windows, sets an OS-level zoom of 200% with the default monitor resolution (3200 x 1800) so icons/applications are sized correctly. I'm trying to achieve something similar on MacOs as scaling down to 2048 x 1142 makes text blurry. Using SwitchResx, I've found a balance with 1920 x 1200p HiDPi. Text looks crisp but the resolution is a 16:10 aspect ratio as opposed to a 16:9 original so the sides are cut off. There is a 1600 x 900 HiDPi given as an option in SwitchResx, as well as custom resolutions I can define, but I haven't gotten these working so far. Was wondering if anyone has found their working solution.

Hi everyone! I’m trying to decide between buying the 13 inch Dasung Paperlike and the 13 Inch Boox Mira - originally I preferred the Mira because of the aesthetic, price, cable management, included cover etc., but it looks like it has a a particularly bothersome flickering issue when paired with M1 family MacBooks (albeit somewhat manageable). Does anyone know if the 13 inch paperlike has similar flickering issues when paired with the M1 family MacBooks?

Hi, I am new to taking notes on iPad and I do really like the feeling of writing on paper. I was always a little skeptical of buying a paper like or other paper replicating screen protector because I don’t like how they dull the screen and leave scratches ( because I do use my iPad for other things) but I may but it if it’s the only option. I recently came across a YouTube video where someone was talking about pen covers for your Apple Pencil that replicate the feel of paper. I was wondering if anyone has tried them or if anyone has tried both the pen tips and paperlike and could compare. Also your overall opinions on paper like would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

My impressions so far are mixed. I would rate it 3.5/5.

It works okay with a 2019 16" MacBook Pro (with an unofficial usb-c to HDMI adapter, but not with the official Apple adapter!), a Microsoft Surface 5 laptop, and a 2014 Mac Mini.

It does not work at all with a 2012 MacBook, or a Samsung S8 phone. It does not work properly with a M1 2020 Mac Mini (the screen keeps flashing). This is very worrisome, as I am not sure if it will work when I upgrade my laptop in the future.

The performance is identical to the 13.3" Dasung Paperlike E-ink Monitor. Very similar ghosting and framerate.

There are some annoying artifacts. When there is a small localized motion in one area of the screen (e.g. when you move the cursor, or when there is an icon animaiton in the Windows 10 start menu), the pixels in remote areas of the screen, which should not change at all, appear to be flickering in a weird way. My guess is that Dasung interpolates the colored data into some kind of grayscale, and the interpolation algorithm is mathematically ill posed (or just poorly thought out or poorly implemented). I find this quite annoying, as it is also present in the 13.3" Paperlike, and Dasung really ought to have fixed it by now. (Especially for the price they are charging.) Afterall, it is almost certainly a software / firmware / driver issue.

Also, for some reason, the cursor seems to lag significantly more on MacOS than on Windows. If you are a Mac user, especially with a new Apple Silicon Mac, you should probably avoid this monitor.

Overall, I think this is basically a prototype beta product, released in the market too early, with several issues that need to be addressed. Nevertheless, I think I will probably keep it, as it does help my visual cortex focus much better on work (at least when all the annoying artifacts do not happen.)

Update 1: I noticed that the "dithering" artifact when the mouse moves is more noticeable in Graphic Mode and Text Mode, and not noticeable in Video Mode. I think it is not merely a dithering artifact, but a genuine bug in the dithering implementations.

Update 2: I set a white background on the desktop, which is natural for e-ink. However, when I move the cursor around, I notice that it leaves a white shade/trail on the desktop. That is, the Dasung monitor interprets the white desktop as very light gray, and there are parts of the screen that are slightly lighter than the "white" desktop. Hey everyone! I have found a used paperlike pro (not the HD!) barely used for $500 and was wondering if its worth it considering the refresh rate is slower than the paperlike HD.

In my country, its very hard to come across these kind of products and buying a new one would put me at over 900-1000$ at the very best not including the import fees.

I mainly plan on using it for work (programming, excel , google sheets, web browsing) no videos or anything crazy.

So worth it? would appreciate an input from someone who has it since all the reviews are about the paperlike pro!

I just got 253 last weekend. Even if I am a paperlike HD-FT user, I am still surprised with the far better user experience. Now 253 can act independently as a standalone display for my home workstation, while 13.3 is more suitable for a secondary display.

As expected, Paperlike series is not designed for out-of-the-box. I made the following setup and configuration:

1. Hardware part: Plan ambient workspace and leverage dedicated accessories.
   1. Ambient light: it is ideal for making sunlight from a left-back window to the screen panel. You would feel those text float upon the eink screen in that case, very charming... But it is impossible for my room layout. I choose modern LED lamps with Ra > 95 instead (btw, there have been a few brands claiming they can simulate the full spectrum of sunlight). Choose those with long and adjustable arms so that light can cover the whole screen from the top front side.
   2. A display mount and handle to adjust where the Paperlike is against you and the lamp to avoid annoying glare and fit your work style.
2. Software part: Necessary OS settings and software tools to boost your user experience on 253.
   1. A dedicated user account (even a dedicated host machine, I connect with an Intel NUC by its thunderbolt to 253's typec port) because the following settings are not compatible with the regular displays. Personally, I need work or study immersively so that I purchase a such high-cost 25" display (which reaches some eye-friendly series of EIZO). I have experienced and am convinced that it would distract my attraction when I have to switch between high-retina display and e-ink display...
   2. Windows/Mac display tunings as mentioned before. Personally, I prefer enabling OS level high contrast light mode.
   3. Chrome/Edge extension: Midnight Lizard. there is a fully configurable high contrast mode.

Follow-ups (optional):

The graphic mode is suitable for most use cases. I prefer Fast++ mode in the price of the mouse lags. I will try more keyboard operations leveraging Autohotkey and the VimiumC extension for Edge...

Dasung Paperlike 253 is good, albeit it is a "qualified" good. The DPI in Paperlike 253 is only 145 compared with 207 DPI for the 13.3 Dasung Paperlike or Boox Mira. And the difference is rather visible. No matter how much one tweaks font smoothing / hinting, no matter what OS (tried all three: Linux, Windows 10 & 11, macOS Monterey), the fonts never look as clear as under 207 DPI on a 13.3" e-ink screen.

Having said all that Paperlike 253 is very usable even at only 145 DPI, the blacks are truly black, and the amount of screen real estate for doing serious programming is good. vscode in a split screen mode is excellent. The build quality is good, the metal case is sturdy. Two USB 3 Type A ports on the left side are functional (one needs to connect the monitor to the PC via a supplied USB "printer" cable in the first place).

Overall no complaints. I just wish e-ink or someone else would release 300 DPI or 600 DPI large e-ink panels. There were some demos made 5 or even 10 years ago of 600 DPI e-ink panels, perhaps by Plastic Logic or someone else, don't remember exactly. Where have all those high-dpi prototypes gone??? 300 DPI 25.3" e-ink panel would be ideal.

Personally with e-ink screens I use AppleFontSmoothing enabled, set to either 2 or 3.

For anyone considering a purchase, unlike Onyx BOOX Mira monitors, Paperlike 253 just works flawlessly (within limits of e-ink) with an AMD GPU. Hardware at workplace: Mac Pro (2019) tower with AMD Radeon PRO W6800X 32 GB, HDMI port, running macOS Monterey 12.0.1. It also works fine (NVIDIA) with Windows 10 and Linux.

I was almost ready to buy one for my 2017 10.5 iPad Pro , but i noticed lots of reviews lately where they say that it scratches the screen, and it damages the stylus. Is this true? Also is paperlike 2 any better? And finally since I’m using it for YouTube and video playback most of the times, does it impact the colors and viewing experience?

At the beginning i got sold on the paperlike feeling, plus you get a screen protector. But if I’m going to pay 40 euros to scratch my screen and stylus I’d rather not do that

I have an iPad Pro 11 inch and am looking for a good screen protector that won’t wear down my Apple Pencil tip too fast.

I’ve literally never seen anyone say that the bare glass has more friction than with a paperlike on. Common complaints I see are usually on the screen resolution. Idk if y’all r just tripping but the glass has so much more friction than a matte screen. Idk if it has more friction bc i just removed a sticky screen protector on it, but even while I was using one, I noticed how slidey my apple pencil felt on it. Not worth it at all. Plus the screen resolution gets toned down and the sound u get feels like nails on chalk to me at least. Won’t be buying another screen protector again. Didn’t do it the whole time I had my 2017 ipad pro and never again for my 2021 M1 iPad. (I’m an digital artist btw so I use the pencil frequently)

I’ve just been writing with a normal (glass) screen protector, but it’s just so... uncomfortable and clumsy. I’ve heard about paperlike and how amazing it is, but I’ve also heard that it barely is worth it since it lasts only around one month with avid usage. Is there any truth to that? Thank you!

Have had paperlike protector on my iPad for a while now but it annoys me so much that sometimes iPad do not react to my finger touch. Got it from apple authorised store (don’t have apple store in my country). Is the issue i’m having is common or is there something wrong with mine?

I have been using the 253 for a few weeks now. Some general observations:

1. You need some type of light. It can be overhead, lamp, or what I bought https://www.benq.com/en-us/lamps/computer-desklamp/screenbar.html . The thing is useless without it. Shitty lighting while using 253 causes eyestrain for me. Almost a dealbreaker.
2. Definitely watch videos on the cursor lag and repaint artifacts. It makes very slow, jerky mouse movements at text/graphic mode. The screen leaves tons of previous screen artifacts causing visual disturbance on current screen. Way around this is to use "slower" -- mode in text/graphic, but this causes the cursor and all movements to jerk. If any of you have used RDP to control a remote computer over the internet, the screen/cursor lag is very similar to that.

If I could go back in time, I would not purchase again due to the cost. However, it is just good enough to keep using it and use to see if it helps eyes, fatigue in the long run.

So the story is that in December i will be getting an Ipad Pro 2021 that is a 11", i will be mainly use it to take notes and draw. Sometimes i will play game on it.

I saw a lot of people saying that Paperlike is good for note taking since it feels and hear like paper. But in the other part i saw some people saying that it will remove some of the quality of the screen.

Should i get it or not?

I've had my iPad pro for a year, I use it mainly as a note taking and digital planner, an e-reader and a lot of drawing and basic photo editing on the go. So I thought that I would finally have a go at the famous Paperlike to have more friction when writing and especially drawing... I got my screen protectors today, very excited to test it! Well... first my pencil does a screeching sound when I do fast strokes, witch itch me a lot, like really, almost like finger nails on board, like wtf? Then, THE NOISE (optical), where's my screen definition went? Maybe I'm just focusing on something that's bothering me, but I just can't with all the "rainbow noise" it's ugly when I read or write and it's just really annoying when I draw, it's not as smooth as before. Also the glare reduction is not that good, it diffuse the light way too much! The texture is good, but I can see why people say it scratches quickly, and it's not good enough to make me want to keep it... I'm gonna try to let it on for a week, but if it's stills bothering me I want to try to get reimbursed, because it's just not worth the 60 canadian $ I paid for it, imo. Does the noise drive others nuts or is it just me? And did someone try to get reimbursed from paperlike because they were not satisfied?

I bought a Paperlike hd-f and have been testing it out this week at work (coding). I was impressed to find that it's totally useable for this purpose. Ofcourse it's not perfect, the tech is still on the way to maturity.

However the problem that I'm finding is that my eyes seem about as fatigued as with my Mac book pro screen! This was a total surprise, as I dont experience fatigue when reading print or an ereader (kindle). What's going on here? I'm wondering if there's some optimisation I can make, or if I'm doing something wrong.

I have a stand lamp with a phllips led light (warm color temp) perpendicular to the screen to avoid reflecting light off the screen into my eyes directly. The room is ambiently lit with another upward facing lamp with the same type of bulb.

My conclusion is that it must be the flicker from the screen itself? If you move the mouse the entire screen will flicker subtley (but noticeably), maybe all this flickering is fatiguing my eyes? Also it could be all the ghosting piling up that makes it hard to focus on text, which can occur often depending on what you are doing and how often you clear.

Lastly it could be the lighting setup? But I've tried a lot of different configurations.

I'm pretty light sensitive at the moment, so I was hoping this would help. Any advice would be great, thanks!

Update:

Based on suggestions below, I've made changes to macOs to:

• Turn off Night mode
• Reduce Motion
• Increase contrast
• Reduce Transparency
• Differentiate Without Color
• Color filter (grayscale)

I notice a big difference, particularly with the contrast increase. It seems to reduce the overall levels of black shown which seems give the rendering alogrithm on the monitor a much easier time (with less changes to render). The screen flicker is significantly reduced to the point that I can't really see it. I think also there's less noise on screen and my eyes can focus much easier. I noticed that my eyes were much less strained with these settings. I'll keep messing around with these + the M settings + Fast/Black settings on the monitor itself.

I’ve been told using a screen protector like paperlike will significantly help my awful handwriting. But that thing is not cheap. Has anyone actually used it and likes it?

First things first, a big thank you to u/wauske for his help. Check this repository which they recommended to me and which this post is based on.

The method below worked for my Rasperry Pi 4B running Raspian 10 Buster (the latest Rasperry Pi OS at the time).

Add these lines to your existing config.txt:

# do not try the lower res 1800x900 it has issues
# simply use the double pixel trick, see below
hdmi_cvt=3200 1800 40 3 0 0 1
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=87
# this will fix the black bars around the screen which are otherwise wasting space
disable_overscan=1

With this, your Paperlike 253 should already be working after reboot! It is on high res however (3200x1800). If like me you want bigger characters, simply use this trick: preferences > rasperry pi configuration > display > enable double pixel. Magic!

Notes:

• if you want to watch videos, do not use VLC (video lags with it for some reason), use Kodi instead it works perfectly! You can even use the android app "Yatse" on your favorite eink smartphone (Yotaphone 3+ in my case) to control it.

• I did not need any EDID custom file like u/wauske did. At least for me, simpler is better!

Wondering if anyone has found any 'PaperLike' feeling screen protectors for the Duo 2? I'd love something that feels like I'm writing on paper with the Slim Pen 2.

Has anyone used PaperLike on the mini? I see both overwhelming support for, and vehement comments against, this product.

Interested in using it to boost tactility when writing/notes with Apple Pencil.

Complaints seem to be mostly about loss of tactility and/or scratches on the PaperLike. Is the loss of tactility mainly due to people not cleaning screen? (Scratch complaints I guess come from those who care primarily about viewing experience - which the screen protector dims a bit)

I tried connecting a brand new Google Chromecast but the screen stays white. I tried the "C and -" trick to get the alternate resolution, it did not help. I know my Google Chromecast works because I plugged it to another LED screen and it worked.

My use case would be to play youtube videos on my Paperlike 253 without needing a big PC/Mac for it. With Google Chromecast I could simply stream videos from any android device. I also tried a cheap media box which also did not work. My last hope is to try with a Rasperry Pi, which I still have to order. Any other idea welcomed.

In theory I could plug any android device to it directly with a HDMI cable. But it requires an android device with video output. Problem is, I don't know of any eink android device which has output video... and there is no way I use a LED android device because of headaches.
