A list of puns related to "Okinawan Language"
I really want to learn some okinawan, whether it be northern, southern or any other region. I love the language and culture here and it would be awesome if I could learn some before I leave for school in Kyoto. If there any tutors that teach okinawan I would love to hear about it.
Note: Just wanna make this clear Iโm assuming all the tutors will only teach in Japanese but I speak Japanese so that wonโt be any issue!! Any tutors whether English or Japanese are perfect!!
Thank you for your time!! And Happy new year
I want to learn Okinawan/Ryukyuan so I can be closer to my culture and so I can maybe impress my mom and my grandparents. Also it would be fun learning a language not many people use. Anybody know where I can learn the vocab and grammar?
Okinawan (ๆฒ็ธๅฃ/ใฆใใใผใฐใ Uchinaaguchi [สutอกษinaหษกutอกษi]), is a Northern Ryukyuan language spoken primarily in the southern half of the island of Okinawa, as well as in the surrounding islands of Kerama, Kumejima, Tonaki, Aguni, and a number of smaller peripheral islands. Central Okinawan distinguishes itself from the speech of Northern Okinawa, which is classified independently as the Kunigami language. Both languages have been designated as endangered by the UNESCO Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger since its launch in February 2009.
Though Okinawan encompasses a number of local dialects, the Shuri-Naha variant is generally recognized as the de facto standard, as it had been used as the official language of the Ryลซkyลซ Kingdom since the reign of King Shล Shin (1477โ1526). Moreover, as the former capital of Shuri was built around the royal palace, the language used by the royal court became the regional and literary standard, which thus flourished in songs and poems written during that era.
Within Japan, Okinawan is often not seen as a language unto itself but is referred to as the Okinawan dialect (ๆฒ็ธๆน่จ Okinawa hลgen?) or more specifically the Central and Southern Okinawan dialects (ๆฒ็ธไธญๅ้จ่ซธๆน่จ Okinawa Chลซnanbu Sho hลgen?).
Okinawan speakers are undergoing language shift as they switch to Japanese. Language use in Okinawa today is far from stable. Okinawans are assimilating to standard Japanese due to the standardized education system, the expanding media, and expanding contact with mainlanders. Okinawan is still spoken by many older people. It is also kept alive in theaters featuring a local drama called uchinaa shibai, which depict local customs and manners
Linguistics
Okinawan is a Japonic language, making it a cousin to the Japanese language. It has no relation to Ainu, another language spoken on the Japanese Islands. Its full listing is:
Japonic > Rykyuan > Northern Ryukuan > Okinawan
Okinawan is written using a a mixture of kanji and hiragana. It is believed that the hiragana system was introduced from mainland Japan in the early 13th century, and that Okinawans had exposure to kanji before that due to extensive trade with China, Korea, and
... keep reading on reddit โกI've got a hard time finding anything useful on the web. I'm looking in particular for a textbook-like approach, with at least some explanation about what's going on grammatically, instead of a list of phrases.
Any help would be very much appreciated. I think I can handle both English and Japanese resources.
Edit: native speakers would probably argue that I'm posting this in the wrong subreddit, but hey.
Dan Buettner gives a really great talk about living to be 100 years old in a TED Talk that you can watch here: http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_buettner_how_to_live_to_be_100.html
Starting at about 9:30, he talks about Okinawa and mentions something that he calls a "Mo-Aye." This is essentially a group of close-knit friends or family that you experience life with. He then mentions a term that he calls "Ikigai" which he suggests means a person's purpose for living. I discussed both terms with a friend of mine who is a JET in southern Japan and he says while he's familiar with the word Ikigai, he believes the "Mo-aye" term might be exclusive to Okinawan.
I've never had a tattoo because I've never found anything that I thought be good to have permanently written on my body. But these two concepts are pretty damn amazing if you ask me. Having a daily reminder to get up in the morning and live with purpose and to share life with the people who are important to me would be a good enough reason to get a tattoo.
So does anyone with familiarity of either the old Okinawan language or Japanese have the skills to help me out? My wife and I would like to get similar-but-not-matching tattoos. Hers would reference the Mo-aye concept and mine would reference Ikigai. I know that language is a very nuanced thing and simple translations don't always work, so any advice about presentation or words to pair with these terms to make them "make sense" grammatically would be awesome. If I'm going to put another culture's language on my body, I want to do it respectfully of their history and culture. I also want my tattoo to say "screen door vegetable" or something ridiculous.
Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I'm thinking of places like Nicaragua's South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region (aka, the Corn Islands), where English is the primary language due to its cultural history with the British Empire.
Or Paraguay and its Chaco Mennonites that still speak German.
California's Central Valley still has large communities of Mexican-Punjabis (India/Pakistan) who speak English, Punjabi, and Spanish: Dancers Honor Californiaโs Mexican-Punjabi Heritage
I believe until a few decades ago, there were even still some communities in Veracruz State, Mexico that spoke French.
I am assuming most here have either Portuguese or Spanish as their native language. If your first language was something other than the two, what was it? If you know a language in addition to English that you learned later in life, what is it, and why/how did you learn it? Are there any other languages you would like to learn? And if so, which/why?

Iโm from Alaska and thus am used to cold climates and wide open spaces with small amounts of people. Will I feel cooped up in Okinawa due to it being a small island? Does it feel crowded? Whatโs the culture like? Howโs the weather?
I can speak basic Japanese so not too worried about the language barrier
i really hate being indigenous sometimes.
if i were black, i could just say "im black" and no one would try and tell me that there's no such thing as black people.
when you come from a group that most people are familiar with, your identity is allowed to be real. im sick of others doubting that indigenous okinawan people are even real, just because they've never heard of us.
and even worse, im sick of people telling me that im japanese. okinawans are not japanese people. we are victims of japanese colonization.
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB
Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"
I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual
So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes
r/unclejokes for dirty jokes
r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC
r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes
Punchline !
Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub
Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat
Do your worst!
They were cooked in Greece.
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
Two muffins are in an oven, one muffin looks at the other and says "is it just me, or is it hot in here?"
Then the other muffin says "AHH, TALKING MUFFIN!!!"
Don't you know a good pun is its own reword?
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies ๐
It really does, I swear!
And now Iโm cannelloni
Because she wanted to see the task manager.

And boy are my arms legs.
Ants donโt even have the concept fathers, let alone a good dad joke. Keep r/ants out of my r/dadjokes.
But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.
