The father of mathematical biophysics and theoretical biology, Nicolas Rashevsky, published in 1954 an article called "Topology and life: In search of general mathematical principles in biology and sociology". Have you hear of applications of topology in biological systems?

Please read this quote from his article:

>If we can in some way represent the different biological relations in terms of a topological space or of a complex, then the fundamental property of life, stated in mathematical terms, is this: The topological space or complex, which corresponds to any organism, can be mapped upon that of some lower organism in such a way that to each point of the space or complex of the lower organism correspond many points of the space or complex of the higher. But this is merely a restatement in topological terms of a generally known fact, and as such is of very limited use.
>
>Any mapping in topology is, however, represented by some transformation. If we seek for any regularities in the mapping observed in the living, regularities which have predictive value, we are of necessity led to the following principle:
>
>The topological spaces or complexes by which different organisms are represented are all obtained from one or at most from a few primordial spaces or complexes by the same transformation, which contains one or more parameters, to different values of which correspond to different organisms.

I was extremely surprised when I read this text because I didn't imagine that topology could be helpful in understanding complex biological structures. I still don't fully understand what he meant but I'm now aware that topology may be very useful in describing the "shapes" emerging from biological systems.

What do you think about this? Is this a well known topic in topology or biology? Have you applied topology to biological systems? Do you think topology will be useful in finding a general mathematical principle in biology and sociology?

Mathematical/ Theoretical Biology

Hello r/math!

I am about to graduate this spring semester as a mathematics major with a minor in computer science. I am taking a year off of school to teach for a year to build some kind of income and to provide me time rto properly prepare myself for applying to graduate school (GREs, letters of recommendation, submitting applications and visitations, etc.)

As an undergraduate, mathematical modeling has been a strong inerest of mine and I've had some research experience with it related to biological phenomena (SIRs models and their modifications, modeling plant populations, bifurcations/ chaos theory with difference equations). I am strongly interested in pursuing this field for my graduate studies and I wanted to hear experiences, stories, or opinions from the lovely people of r/math. More specifically, I wanted to hear about how different programs are designed and implemented for one's graduate studies.

Cheers and a big thank you ahead of time!

Transitioning to Mathematical/Theoretical Biology

Hello, I am currently a sophomore at a small liberal arts college majoring in Biology. I found biological issues to be my prime interests, especially ecology and evolution. My career interest is to pursue a PhD in EEB but using theoretical approaches. However things seem to be difficult at my home institution. All professors in biologists only deal with empirical data, and the Math department is very small with only 4 professors and almost zero research. No one is bio/math/cs is an expert in mathematical modeling. At the moment, I figure that I should rather major in biology and minor in math because: I love almost any topic in biology, and the Biology department has a lot more research opportunities. Furthermore, as much as I am interested in Math, I am only interested if it is directly applied to biological problems. I am sorry for the long rant, but here are my questions: 1. If I want to pursue theoretical biology, would doing a lot of research involving empirical problems help me much? 2. What is the minimum amount of computer science I need? 3. Does a Biology major look unattractive to potential advisors when applying for PhD?

Help finding theoretical/mathematical biology PhD programs / groups?

Hi r/biology!

I'm a senior in undergrad currently applying to PhD programs. I've recently discovered that I really enjoy theoretical and mathematical biology, though I haven't narrowed my interests down within the subfield.

I'm wondering if anyone here can direct me to PhD programs in this area. I'm often finding that many schools don't have a formal program for mathematical biology, but have one or two groups doing work, so professor/group names would be really helpful too!

Thanks so much!

Application to the Elite master course Theoretical and Mathematical Physics

Hello everyone,

I'm a physics bachelor's student from Lithuania and I'm interested in applying to the Elite master course Theoretical and Mathematical Physics in the near future.

I have one question in particular about the application requirements where it mentions that you need to send the high-school diploma (Zeugnis der Hochschulreife). In our country we get two papers under the name "maturity certificate" : one is what you may call a standard diploma (confirming you have finished high school) and the other is called annex to the mentioned diploma (like a transcript of final grades and exams you've taken that comes along with the diploma). The question is: do I have to send the diploma part only or do I need to send the information about my grades/exams also since they're given together?

I personally think the high school grades and exams information is relevant for admission to bachelor programs, not masters. But if that's not the case then will it have much impact on the admission decision? (I used to have very average grades in physics back then and my exam score is not particulary high, but since then I've moved up and I predict I'll graduate my bachelor's with honors).

Thank you in advance.

Was having a debate recently about what matters more in aggregate across all Fantasy Football leagues. Is it PF or PA? Which is a better predictor of a good record?

Phrased differently, on average, simulated infinite times, will a team with below median PA be more likely have the better record? Or will a team with an above median PF be more likely to have a better record?

Or is it reverse? Or is it equal?

This is kind of a statistical question, so looking for input on that front. Downvote me to oblivion if not worth the time.....

Thanks

Mathematical Biologists / Applied Mathematicians That Work In Bioeconomics and/or Theoretical Ecology

I’m trying to gather a list of mathematical biologists to help study from. Some authors might be ...

Mark Kot, Mark Lewis, Christopher M Baker, Alan Hastings, or Colin Clark for example. Some of these authors don’t necessarily work directly on bioeconomics, but their contributions to mathematical ecology can absolutely find home in bioeconomic studies.

Particularly the work of Colin Clark has felt really inspiring for me, but I’m really keen to direct my PhD studies towards the mathematical biology and renewable resource economics fields and try work on ecological problems within human mediated environments. Interestingly, sometimes economics comes into play with how humans influence ecology and vice versa.

How to steer my career into Mathematical/Theoretical Physics Research

Hi guys
I'm an incoming third year physics +engineering undergrad (double major) with a current GPA of 2.61/4. I have no other projects related to theoretical or mathematical physics at this point and tbh my knowledge of both physics and math is still weak because I was not able to study effectively post covid lockdown and had some deep mental health issues. During this summer I have just been trying to cover up my past backlogs so that I can improve my gpa in the upcoming semester.

I wanted to become a researcher, or professor in fields related to mathematical physics and theoretical physics. I know that my situation is bleak now, but what steps can I take to improve my changes of getting a decent PhD in these fields, or even just increasing my knowledge properly..

I know of Hooft's website which details the material one needs to learn to become a good theoretical physicist. What about mathematical physics ? I am not a math major, what math subjects should I definitely try to cover before I graduate ? Or can some of it wait till later, but till when. Given my absolutely lackluster background, how do I approach professors for projects or internships in the next summer ? Also, what kinds of project/internship profiles would be best to take up, especially given the vast nature of theoretical physics, some of my seniors have suggested me to stay away from projects and focus on the theory itself. While that does seem a promising idea, I want to know what would be the best option with regard to securing PhD opportunities later, is there something more I should do to compensate for my terrible grades, other than attempting to improve them i the upcoming semesters (which I certainly will do )

Need y'alls advice. Thanks in Advance

Advice for a Pure Math student transitioning to Mathematical Biology/Mathematical Oncology?

Hey everyone! I am a Pure Mathematics undergraduate student in my senior year. After an experience with epidemiological modeling research, I've grown more interested in Biomathematics/Mathematical oncology. I'm planning on pursuing a PhD in Mathematical Biology (moving more in research around oncology) but I have taken only pure math classes till now, except Differential Equations.

I really like the ODE-modeling aspect, but I that's all that I know about it now. Definitely knowing basic ODEs is not enough and I want to know a lot more- but I don't know what 'more' is. How do you suggest I get started? What are some of the concepts I absolutely need to know while starting off? Any books you recommend? Or any must-read papers? What mass of information do I need to know before I can start designing models on my own? And how do I bridge that 'gap' between just solving ODEs on paper to using that knowledge to build models? What are some other modeling processes that are most 'in demand' lately? To all those in the field, especially to the ones switching from Pure Math to Biomath, what is one advice you would give to others starting off?

I'm sorry for this long post, but I was also wondering if anyone had any advice about how to get started with running simulations? I am absolutely new to this, and technically know nothing about it but I really want to get my hands dirty with some practical stuff in addition to ODE modeling. Any books, websites or papers about those? Or how did you get started with running simulations? Thank you!

So what is the theoretical maximum value of Bitcoin? A mathematical analysis

I've seen a few people throwing around the idea of a Million dollar bitcoin at some point in the future. Is such a thing possible? Is there enough wealth in the world to make such a thing happen? What would that even look like?

Well, let's run some quick math and take a look:

The Million Dollar Bitcoin

  • A million dollar Bitcoin would make Bitcoin's market cap of 21 Million total Bitcoins worth $21,000,000,000,000, or 21 Trillion USD.

  • If we assume a BTC Dominance which remains at about 60%, this would make the entire Crypto Market worth 35 Trillion Dollars.

  • The Current US Stock market has a total value of about 51 Trillion Dollars, as of December 31st, 2020 (Source).

  • This would put the entire Cryptocurrency Market Space at approximately 69% the value of the 2020 US Stock Market; this would be an increase of roughly 17x from the Cryptocurrency market's almost 2 Trillion Dollar current value.

So, turns out, a one-million dollar Bitcoin is actually numerically rather possible, and within the realm of reality given a long enough time frame.

Theoretical Maximums?

But let's go farther. What other huge numbers would be theoretically possible for Bitcoin. What would it look like if Cryptocurrency actually became the currency/base of value in the 21st century?

( The following examples keep the 60% BTC Dominance rate, for the purposes of math. )

  • If Crypto grows to the size of the entire 2020 US Stock market, one Bitcoin would have a price of $1,451,671.67 ( Almost 1.5 Million Dollars )

  • If Crypto grows to the size of all stock markets in the world of 2020 (~90 Trillion), one Bitcoin would be worth $2,571,428.57 ( About 2.5 Million Dollars )

  • If Crypto grows to the size of all "money" assets in the world of 2020 (~215 Trillion), one Bitcoin would be worth $6,142,857.14 ( A little over 6 Million Dollars )

  • If Crypto somehow subsumed all value of all assets in the world of 2020, at high end estimates ( 1.2 Quadrillion USD ), one Bitcoin would be worth $34,286,714.28 ( A little over 34 Million Dollars )

( Source on worldwide money valuations )

Oh, and one last fun one:

  • Bitcoin 'only' has to grow to ~300,000 USD per Bitcoin in order to be worth more in market cap than the entire global banking industry of 2020.

#Closing Thoughts

A Million Dollar BTC is honestly a lot more "reali

Relevance of Systems Biology and mathematical modelling in industry and research.

I noticed that quite a few universities and bioinformatics institutes have an increased amount of labs that focus on mathematical modelling of biological systems. This can range from epidemiology to systems biology of the cell.

I am really interested in the mathematical parts of bioinformatics, mainly because i enjoy probability theory and statistics and a lot of research involves stochastic processes/stochastic and statistical modelling/machine learning. I also found more papers that involve modelling with differential equations, which also sounds interesting, but they aren't cited that often.

Now I was wondering if such work is purely theoretical or if there are applications (perhaps in an industrial setting) as well. I read that methods of systems biology are already (occasionally) employed in drug development. Does anyone here work in this area either in academia or industry? If yes, what do your tasks look like and would you say it's worth getting into this specific area of bioinformatics? I'm an undergrad student and haven't worked in a lab yet but would like to apply to some this year.

AskScience AMA Series: I'm Kit Yates. I'm here to talk about my new book, the Maths of Life and Death which is about the places maths can have an impact in people's everyday lives. I'd also love to discuss my research area of Mathematical Biology. Ask Me Anything!

Hi Reddit, I am Kit Yates. I'm a senior lecturer in Mathematical Biology at the University of Bath. I'm here to dispel some rumours about my fascinating subject area and demonstrate how maths is becoming an increasingly important tool in our fight to understand biological processes in the real world.

I've also just published a new popular maths book called the Math(s) of Life and Death which is out in the UK and available to pre-order in the US. In the book I explore the true stories of life-changing events in which the application (or misapplication) of mathematics has played a critical role: patients crippled by faulty genes and entrepreneurs bankrupt by faulty algorithms; innocent victims of miscarriages of justice and the unwitting victims of software glitches. I follow stories of investors who have lost fortunes and parents who have lost children, all because of mathematical misunderstanding. I wrestle with ethical dilemmas from screening to statistical subterfuge and examine pertinent societal issues such as political referenda, disease prevention, criminal justice and artificial intelligence. I show that mathematics has something profound or significant to say on all of these subjects, and more.

On a personal note I'm from Manchester, UK, so it's almost a pre-requisite that I love football (Manchester City) and Music (Oasis were my favourite band). I also have two young kids, so they keep me busy outside of work. My website for both research and pop maths is https://kityates.com/
