(RT Podcast) I'm the guy riding the Tour de France for Cure Leukaemia! AMA, I guess?

Hi /r/roosterteeth - I'm the person riding the Tour de France for charity that Gus mentioned at the beginning of the RT podcast this week! I wanted to post to say thank you, give a little more backstory, and share the link to donate for those who want and can afford to donate - Extra Life is such a fantastic event every year and the RT community gives so much to help that great cause, so I figured some of you might be interested in learning more about this ride that I'm so lucky to be part of.

Gus had the high points right (although it was actually my girlfriend who sent in an email without me knowing, so it was a total surprise to me):

  • The Tour 21 Challenge: 25 amateur cyclists riding the entirety of the 2022 Tour de France (route here, fun cinematic overview here), a week ahead of the pros (2,068 miles/3,328km, roughly 150K ft/50K m of elevation gain, all over 21 days of riding with just three rest days). Of the 18 riders named so far, I'm the only American - the rest are all out of the UK.
  • Goal of raising Β£1M ($1.4M)for Cure Leukaemia, the UK's blood cancer charity, which will go towards accelerating clinical trials of new therapies by funding 12 treatment centers across the UK. Corporate sponsors help pay for the costs of the event so that everything raised can go towards doing good for patients.
  • I have a personal goal of raising at least $40,000, and currently have raised $18,917, as of 18:10 PST on 12/23.
  • We start on June 24th in Copenhagen, riding three days in Denmark, then head to France for the rest (except starting Stage 6 in Belgium, and ending Stage 8 and riding most of Stage 9 in Switzerland).
  • Since I was selected in early October, I've ridden 1500 miles in training, and will probably continue to do at least 100 miles per week for the next few months (along with strength training), ramping to at least 250 or 300 per week immediately before we leave.
  • This is the only event like it in the world, and only the second time it's been done; the first year was 2021, and you can watch a documentary about that ride (aired by NBC Sports during their Tour de France coverage) here.
  • If you want to follow my training: I'm on Instagram and Strava as grahamd_, and

My mum was diagnosed with leukaemia today.

I’m 17 and really don’t know what to do. My dad is out of the picture and I have 3 younger siblings. She’s in hospital for a month at least so we’re currently living with our grandparents. Any advice or ideas or anything would be so greatly appreciated, I just need to talk about this and for some reason this is the first place that came to mind.

Reaching out to anyone else with my rare type of Leukaemia

In June 2018 aged 21M I was diagnosed with Chronic eosinophilic leukaemia from blood test results after being admitted with a high eosinophilic count of 25, I was treated with steroids which brought my levels down to 0 after a few days, once I was tailored off my 75mg ED dose I was given imatinib 100mg a day 7 weeks later my bone marrow biopsy showed no trace of cancer/mutation therefore stopped my treatment because in their professional opinion I was misdiagnosed, 3 years later October 2021 I have relapsed, and currently on steroids again waiting for more tests to come back before starting treatment. I was hoping there was someone else out there with this condition in this community to share their experience because there is much less information on CEL in comparison to CML and CL

Thank you Henry.

[TOMT][TV MOVIE][1980s] TV movie about a kid with leukaemia

I saw it on a TV in a hotel somewhere in California with my mother in 1987. It was about a girl who gets leukaemia, loses all her hair, takes part in some sort of sporting event but eventually dies (death could have been revealed as an ending caption, not sure). It is not Something About Joey as that is about a boy and he doesn't lose his hair. I've been through a lot of lists of cancer and leukaemia themed films and I can't find it. My guess is that it was a cheap TV movie.

Children’s book about 2 friends with leukaemia

I read this book when I was pretty young, it may have been released early 2000s but likely before that.

i’m sure in the beginning the plot follows one of the girls who goes into a hospital or hospice for her leukaemia, and meets the other girl there. i think the hospital may have been near the beach or in a beachside town/village.

i think there might have been the word β€œrainbow” in the title?

i’m sure the cover was of the two girls hugging, i think they were standing on a beach with rocks and a rainbow in the background.

i can’t remember what it was, but i think there was a big plot twist towards the end? maybe that one of the girls was getting better and then suddenly died?

this has been bugging me for ages, so thanks in advance!
