Young Adult fiction about Asian Mythology (Japanese, Chinese, Korean)?

Hi there!

I'm currently looking for more books that are about/incorporate Asian mythology. I'm a huge fan of Asian fantasy/horror, and previous books I've read within this category are: the Flame In The Mist series (by RenΓ©e Ahdieh), the Wicked Fox series (by Kat Cho) and the Cathy's Key series (by Jordan Weisman and Sean Stewart). I also currently have Shadow Of The Fox (by Julie Kagawa) and The Girl From The Well (by Rin Chupeco) on my shelf to read!

I'd love to hear any recommendations for similar books (esp ones set in China, as I haven't read any Chinese mythology themed books yet), especially because I've been asked what I want for Christmas, and I always like to ask for a book or two!

Thanks :)

Update: thank you so much for all the responses! for now, I've asked for Forest Of A Thousand Lanterns for my christmas, and I can't wait to read it!

Korean Mythology goddess of War and boundaries Hanja/Seonangshin

Type Worrier

Lore: the Seonangshin are the children of the evil Sojinhang. The patron of the house, the deity Seongjushin, made the children of Sojinhang turn into Seonangshin, who had to feed on saliva. This origin of Seonangshin shows that in Korean mythology, Seonangshin was considered to be one of the weaker deities, especially as the Seongjugut mentions that Seonangshin are 'lowly soldiers'. a stone tower, large stone, house, or holy tree where people prayed to Seonangshin. Travelers built Seonangdangs on trails, and other travelers added three stones to the Seonangdang. After adding three stones, the travelers prayed for safety on their journey.

passive the holy shrine: when Hanja is in a fight with a enemy god she gains protections if she wins she gains 1 blessing to keep the stack if she attacks enemy minions and defeats them they become her disciples and attack enemy and towers if a enemy is in the range of the her disciples they become debuffed and there protections are taken by 17% this passive stacks up to 120 if her mana is low or is empty she becomes enrage and gains a shield for how many enemy's are in her vicinity.

ability 1 who which should I pick: this ability allows her to switch a different spear in battle there are 4 verity's of spears.

1.polearm: this too headed spear allows her to move faster when fighting her foes this has the ability to silences enemy from using there abilities this affect lingers for 2s.

2.Hak: this spear allows her to stay from a far but give strong blows from it cuts her enemy's deep by giving them continues damage.

  1. JΕ«monji yari: this is a projectile she throws this to her target to stick her enemy and she leaps to the location and grabs her target to throw to the wall or to a team mate to deal knock damage.

4.kusarigama: this allows her to attack in a range distance to keep the fight from her.

ability 2. keep your distance: she pushes her enemy's away and crippling them.

ability 3 shock wave: she jumps down on a target of are she will make the ground ripple around but if she use a weapons from her it make her ability stronger a different weapon cause a different effect.

ability 4 I'm right here: she strikes down on a area to using all her weapons to fight off enemy's and deal crippling damage to all enemy's in the area her basic attacks are replaced with weapons.

Questions about the Imugi - Korean Mythology

Hey everyone! I stumbled across a legend about the Imugi saying that it received its power from the sun god through a human girl - once that girl turned 17 she would transform into the imugi. There was also mention of a dragon shaped mark on her shoulder.

I cannot find credible sources for this legend but it has been on quite a few blogs about Korean folklore.

Does anyone know the full story?

Translation of a Korean Genshin Impact User's Theory on Real World Religion & Mythology in Genshin

Disclaimer: I have absolutely 0 contribution in this discussion as the only thing I merely did is to translate (as close to word-to-word as I could) the thoughts of this user. Also, the discrepancies between English and Korean translations may cause some confusion, which I tried to mitigate by revising certain parts/omitting unnecessary parts.

This post is a little different compared to other ones in that instead of analyzing lore in Genshin, we are going to be looking at religions and mythologies that Genshin was inspired by.

Original Link: https://gall.dcinside.com/mgallery/board/view/?id=onshinproject&no=546256

5th Post (Alchemy and Khaenri'ah): https://www.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Impact/comments/mmgh9y/translation_of_a_korean_genshin_impact_users/

1. Norse Mythology

1-1. Khaenri'ah

As mentioned in the second post, Khaenri'ah seems to be based on dwarves of Norse mythology.

Coupled with the fact that Kaeya is heavily hinted at being a descendant of a royal family, as shown by Mona's voiceline on Kaeya.

>Kaeya Alberich? He's a Pavo Ocellus. Destined for greatness and grandeur... and to hide ugly realities behind a layer of charm and elegance. He believes he has made a clean break with his past, but one day fate will catch up with him. When it does, he will have a major decision to make.
>
>- Mona, About Kaeya

Mona mentions that Kaeya will have to make a major decision in the future, but we'll talk about this some other day.

1-2. Mondstadt

Mondstadt relation to Norse myths include Dvalin, Durin, and Dainsleif.

(Translator's Note: Yes, Dainsleif hails from Khaenri'ah, but the original post was made back in early November, so author probably didn't have much available information on Dainsleif at the time.)

I can't remember the girl's name, but she has a really good sense of smell and can smell when demons possess human bodies. She has something like 'a tiger soul'.

There is also this really dramatic scene where you see a lot of the royal court ladies jumping off a cliff rather than get captured by the enemy demon/soldiers.

The author was female (I think) and had Korean parents, but grew up in a Western country.

It was intended to be part of a series, so it probably was written sometime between 2008 and 20016.

[HIRING] Illustrators Needed for Korean Mythology-based 5e Adventure Path Books

https://preview.redd.it/9spbbccfcxw61.jpg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac2d3661d6ecb2873e8e87df4d79730cb6e82d3b

Hi there,

New op in this subreddit.

I'm recruiting Korean/Korean-American character designers and background illustrators for a six-part series Adventure Path I hope to fundraise through Kickstarter to self-publish. Setting is heavily based on the Joseon Dynasty of Korea and deeply influenced by folklore, mythology, and history.

This will be a multi-artist, long-term endeavor, but immediate priority will be to illustrate material from the first installment (the first draft has already been finished, pending edits) and for promotional material for the Kickstarter campaign. Work may include (and will be up to the team to decide on) half page illustrations featuring background and character, full-body illustrations of characters, and spot illustrations (such as a character portrait or item illustration). Current rates for full-body illustrations are set at $75 to $100 USD depending on complexity, but I'm happy to negotiate what's fair for the task.

Concerning deadlines: I'm flexible around other jobs and engagements, but I would like to have consistent pieces finished per month to see that the books are finished in a timely fashion and somewhat more urgently, that there is enough promotional material prepared by the holiday season. I intend to launch the fundraiser ideally then.

Given the nature of the project, I must prioritize illustrators from within the Korean community, but please do email or PM me with portfolios if interested. Thank you very much and I appreciate the consideration.

Similarities to Norse mythology (used google translate from korean)

First of all, to briefly describe the plot of the Norse mythology, it is this In the beginning, there was a great giant named Imir. Many giants were born in the armpits of that Imir. However, another existence called Odin, a god, killed Yumir Using parts of his body, he created the sky and the earth, and made a huge wall with Miir's eyebrows and lived in it. The world of the gods in that wall is called Asgard. But even after that, God and the giant continue to confront and fight. The gods raise warriors to prevent the end of the gods called Ragnarok (Twilight of the Gods). However, in the end, the gods in the Ragnarok era end up losing battles with giants who crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. However, it ends with the content that the surviving god (I can't remember the name) and some humans who survived hiding in the roots of Yggdrasil create a new world again. This is the rough plot of the Norse mythology. Although I omitted it very much. There are a few important figures in this Nordic myth that I think are highly related to the Attack on Titan. Odin, the god of wisdom who had the greatest power among the gods, and the god of wisdom who killed Miir, and Loki, who was a giant and god The first giants, Miir, and Loki's children, Mirgard, Fenil, and Hell, think that these characters are directly related to the Attack on Titan. First of all, the character Loki was a giant. Betray the giants and form an alliance with God to become a god. But in the end, they betray the gods again and stand at the forefront with the giants and attack the gods during Ragnarok.

Loki had three children, the names Mirgard, Hell, and Pennil, all of whom were born when Loki was on the side of the gods. These are giants born in Asgard. However, Mirgard is a giant snake among the giants, and its size is so enormous that it surrounds the planet, so Odin expelled Mirgard from the world of the gods. And Fennil is a wolf-type giant, whose power is so strong that Odin is afraid, so he lures them out and seals them with chains. Hell is a female giant, and his appearance is so bizarre that Odin exiled Hell in the name of defending Hell. This was the decisive moment in which Loki betrayed the gods later in the wrath of Loki. Isn't there any guessing at this point? A total of three giant giants, powerful giants, and bizarre female giants who have been expelled from the world of the gods, It is quite overlapping with the images of Bertolt (super large giant), Liner (armored giant), and Anna (

I am a noob writer but I'm not afraid of harsh criticism.

What the prologue is about - This is a prologue to a short story. It introduces a mystery revolving around a monster from Korean folklore through the perspective of a naive foreigner from a neighboring country. It takes place in an Korean-inspired land deep in fantasy, heavily inspired by Korean mythology and folklore which is very different from Chinese and Japanese mythology and folklore in many ways.

I intend the short story to be part of a compilation of short stories set in a dark fantasy, featuring a "detective-lite" character based around mysteries of monsters, creatures, and other myths from Korea. I also think fantasy is a pretty good excuse to show off how unique Korean culture can be as someone who was raised in Korea.

It takes place in an Korean-inspired land deep in fantasy, heavily inspired by Korean mythology and folklore which is very different from Chinese and Japanese mythology and folklore.

I've already completed the short story, but I still need to heavily edit it. I think the prologue part is the most finished and I want to see if it's a good start for the story. I intend the short story to be part of a compilation of short stories set in a dark fantasy, featuring a "detective-lite" character based around mysteries of monsters, creatures, and other myths from Korea. I also think fantasy is a pretty good excuse to show off how unique Korean culture can be as someone who was raised there.

Some things I want to know is...

  • Is the prologue interesting? Do you want to read more?
  • Even if the prose seem basic, is it clear enough that you can follow the story? If it's a mess, can you please go into detail why?
  • Point of view seems to be a consistent subject I've been getting wrong recently. I think I got it right this time but that's what I also thought the last three times.
    • Is the point of view clear? Is it a mess? If it is a mess, could you provide an example of how you would do the point of view if you were the writer?

[2211 - Updated] Critique please for "The Beast of Hosan" prologue - A dark fantasy based on Korean mythology.

I am a noob writer but I'm not afraid of harsh criticism.
