The Problem with the Theory of Implanted False Memories

The chief argument made by ME deniers is that the phenomena is just proof that memory is not incredibly reliable, and that one person with a false memory can infect others with the same mistaken recall. Both of these things are true, but here is the catch, by pointing this out they should have just as easily dispelled the false memories.

Here is what researchers have to say about the simple steps required to dislodge false recollections.

*Asking them to recall the source of the memory

Explaining to them that being pressured to recall something multiple times can induce false memories*

SOURCE

According to this, the exact type of questions and suggestions made by ME deniers qualify as the method of dispelling false memories, yet as we have seen, most ME experiencers are not having their memories upended by these "skeptics". Given the durability of ME experiences in the face of an onslaught of the methods used to correct false memories, either the researchers are wrong, or the denialists are.

I feel like I'm constantly trying to recapture feelings from when I was younger... but WHAT IF THOSE ARE FALSE MEMORIES?? What if the world has always just been shit, and we have this idea implanted in our heads that there's a better version...

Yeah had this trippy thought tonight as I've been playing Diablo 2 Ressurected. I feel like my last decade I've been just trying to recapture the lighthearted fun I used to have before everything got so damn heavy and gloomy.

I think I loaded up D2 to try and get that feeling of just grinding all night without a care, having a blast, finding cool loot.

But... what if those memories are false. What if we've always lived in a state of this dissatisfaction and it's just an illusion that there's some better, happier state of being that we're nostalgic for???

Just my crazy random thought for tonight.

When it's empirically proved time and time again that human memory is unreliable - to the point that false memories can be implanted by a trained psychologist - why do we place so much value on stories and events or dialogue recalled from memory years ago?

Thankfully the court of law demands proof beyond a reasonable doubt, but the court of public opinion holds no such standard. I couldn't accurately recall what I was doing last week, god forbid I'm asked to recall what happened on the 22nd October 2007.

P.s. I hope this doesn't end up in oddly specific, 22nd October 2007 was just a regular day. I think?

Can’t get over obsession with implanted memories (TW: R//pe)

I made a post yesterday if you want to check it out:

https://www.reddit.com/r/adultsurvivors/comments/qhyc8e/is_anybody_else_struggling_with_this/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

I have autism so this probably contributes and so does my best friend. I can’t get over that I may have implanted a memory in my best friend by how I questioned her. I told her I suspected I was r//ped on a certain day and then said something along the lines of, β€œDid you see me get r//ped?” She claims she does remember and now years later I’m very worried that it didn’t happen that that I gave her some false memory. It’s been almost two years since I started asking questions. If this was not a real memory then for these two years, I’ve been traumatized over nothing and that’s what’s freaking me out. Back then I didn’t realize that memories can be distorted through questioning. She also did some self hypnosis thing that I sent her a link to after I started questioning what happened (she did it willingly and I told her she didn’t have to do it if she didn’t want to) and said that it helped her remember more details about what happened but I’ve also heard that hypnosis is also unreliable. It’s been messing with me since yesterday and I can’t stop thinking about it. Does anybody have any advice on how to deal with this? Thanks

If the events of Total Recall are truthfully just the memories that Recall implanted in Quaid, then what is he going to do about his wife?

I'm not sure if they want Quaid to actually think that the events actually happened, but if they do, then isn't he going to think that his wife is a secret agent? Maybe the entire film, including the beginning, before he goes to Recall, are implanted memories?

I suppose that the events of the film could have actually happened, but I really don't think that it did. He wanted blue skies on Mars, and blue skies on Mars is what he got. How much of a coincidence would that be?

How long did it take Picard to recover after having an entire lives worth of memories implanted into his brain?

After recently rewatching the episode with the infamous introduction of the flute I had a brief thought. "How long did it take for Picard to recover from an entire lives worth of memories being integrated into his consciousness"?

I would imagine several weeks of trying to remember his own name, followed by some intense sessions with the ship's counselor.

Or would it have been a bit more like this?

Honestly, I think that this would have been a massive trauma for Jean-Luc similar to recovering from his assimilation.

[TOMT][MOVIE][probably 2000s or 2010s] Movie about forced implanted memory chips

I remember watching a movie (i think on Netflix but I don't know for sure) about these people who all had these little memory chips in i think their necks and they could like play stuff on TVs by pulling it from their memory. I vaguely remember the guy getting caught cheating by his wife because she forced him to show his memory on the TV. I could be wrong but I think I also remember a part at the end where one of the characters rips out the chip because of how much she hates it. I saw this movie a couple years ago and it was so interesting and I really want to watch it again but can't remember the name or find it anywhere. Any help would be much appreciated :D
