More out of curiosity than anything, I was reading up on immunotoxicology and given all the mechanisms I had to wonder.
I used to think that because I never personally discriminated against anyone because of skin color that I had no reason to concern myself with "so-called" white privilege. I couldn't help how I was born? Right?
I even used to think that because I had long hair and got hassled by the cops myself (even beaten and unjustly arrested a couple of times) that I knew what what it was like to feel the weight of oppression kneeling on my neck.
But now that I have taken several sociology courses, I can no longer find solace in any of the easy platitudes white people like me always use to make ourselves feel better about our white privilege.
1 in 1,000 black males in the USA gets killed by the police. That's both crazy and totally unjustifiable. Can you imagine having friends who have been killed by cops because they had a hammer under their coat or because they reached for their ID? Yet racists pretend that this is somehow justified because "black kill blacks" with no understanding whatsoever about how people internalize the manner in which their society treats them.
And even so-called "moderates" like Mike Bloomberg and Joe Biden have responded by endorsing legislation that gives the police ever more power to hassle, beat, arrest, jail, and generally terrorize minorities. How can whites continue to defend what is objectively one of the worst (if the not the very worst) criminal justice systems on our planet? Has the "jail everyone" mentality that took over both political parties in the 1980s ever solved anything?
How do we justify giving clearly racist cops free rein to terrorize innocent people and petty criminals? How do we justify for profit prisons? How do we justify state prisons set up to profit off the slave labor of inmates? How do we justify a prison system in which the expectation is prison rape, prison beatings, and even prison murder at the hands of both guards and inmates?
I am a white male, and if I am honest with myself I have to admit that I enjoy a baseline expectation of not getting killed or jailed for doing nothing wrong. Furthermore, it is even more likely than not that my legitimate views on important subjects are taken seriously by others. These are baseline expectations that I enjoy that I must admit that many others (including my wife and some of my friends) do not enjoy. I apologize for the fact that I had to take a course in sociology to finally get these patently obvious points through my thick white skull.
The title says it all.
Now because of COVID that iβm in virtual learning, i have literally never missed a single class, nor have I gotten sick once. What the hell is wrong with this system? What do I do?
Typically, iβd miss almost a month of school from being sick.

I am here to be heard for the difficulty that is dealing with my high drama BPD mama I'm due in a few months with my first biological child and my mother has had some flare ups the last few weeks and I worry as my belly is getting big she's going to be more and more inappropriate. BPD soon-to-be grandma is starting to come out in full force.
This week, on Facebook my SIL posted photos of her kiddo, (who my brother helped bring up) and my late brothers bio kid (who's mom moved out of state with when the baby was little) who are similar in age and have become friends. I'll come back to this, but first, some backstory.
Maintaining that relationship has taken both mother's being very adult and understanding and cultivating a relationship for the sake of the kids to understand their shared history with a complicated father (a really good man, but struggled with trauma and self medicated with alcohol). This relationship is amazing. These kids are teenagers and both thriving, and their mom's have done a great job in being civil and doing what's best for their kids. I personally didn't get very involved with his bio daughter, as I was much younger than my brother and was struggling with my own trauma demons until a few years ago. I'm her aunt, but it's been recently that I became "friends" with his bio daughters mom and started getting updates on her life. I like the photos she shares, and I feel pretty good about not inserting myself too directly for the sake of my own feelings with her daughter. I want to be available for her daughter if she has questions about my brother, but I don't need to force anything you know? Kids got her own stuff going on. My mother however, feels different about that.
Now, I have to say, I personally believe being raised by our mother with BPD was a significant source of trauma for both of us, but more so for him. His death was hard on all of us but watching him pass while she forced herself to the center of the greif circle and invalidated everyone else because SHE'S THE MOTHER was cringe worthy at best, and at it's worst was traumatic for those who he loved most.
So, this post about these kids.
I thought: "oh hey! What a cute picture of my nieces, wow, they're growing up so fast, so glad to see them thriving" and I liked the post and went on with my life. My mother, however decided to comment, and make a passive-aggressive comment about how it was so nice

I keep getting the Dormant Commerce Clause and the Privileges and Immunities Clause of Art. IV confused. I know that P&I only applies to actual persons, not corporations, but sometimes the MBE questions will be about an actual person and have both DCC and P&I as answer choices. If anyone has any advice how to distinguish them, please help!
