I was surprised to learn that the word hobby derives from the word hobbyhorse, rather than the other way around. A "hobby" was originally the term for a small horse, often a cart horse. From the toy "hobbyhorse," people began referring to a pursuit that went nowhere as a "hobby."

Are there any examples of 'hobbyhorse' / 'hobby' usage that mean not so common hobby stuff.
I mean a strong side of a person. Or one is good at something and does not do that as a hobby. Any ideas?
This wonderful invention has apparently reached USA now. Idea is that instead of competing in different categories with real horses, the kids use toys basically. Here is an article, sorry for the paywall.
