Guenevere Who?

I'm a historical fantasy author, and my first published novel came out yesterday. I've lived in Canada most of my life, but was always moving from one city to the next. I was, as you say, an army brat. After school I never shook that need to travel and explore, and lived and worked in England and Japan.

Throughout it all I was always writing, mostly fantasy. Eventually my writing started mimicking my nomadic life. I started to imagine a fantasy epic where the characters going to new lands would start to learn new languages and customs as they travelled. Which brings me to...

What did she write?

Orope - the White Snake is a historical fantasy set NOT in Medieval Times - but the Bronze Age. There's no such thing as a 'common tongue' (something that always made me a little crazy in fantasy novels, especially after I started learning different languages). The maps mimic the style of the culture and time. They begin each chapter, slowly filling out as the character progresses into the once unknown...

The real seed of the novel came from my love of Ancient Egypt and ancient mediterranean cultures in general. I kept coming back to the turbulent time that led to the end of the Bronze Age, and the decline of the first empires known to us. How did the Bronze Age end? It's a question no one knows the answer to. The speculation ranges from disease, to natural disasters, and a whole slew of explanation in between. I wanted to answer that question, so I created my own Bronze Age, in a fantasy world that mirrors our own.

As the novel opens, a nomadic desert tribe (a throwback to the Stone Age) believes that the gods have become angry with the corruption and evil in the world and will destroy it in a great flood. They send out three messengers to reach the three great empires and warn them. But the destruction begins almost immediately, and their chances of succeeding seem infinitesimal as their messengers get closer to their destinations.

It's the first novel in a series, with a sequel coming next year.

As a fantasy/sci-fi fan and history lover, I found Orope refreshing since it’s placed in a fantastical bronze age in the already saturated market of medieval-fantasy novels.

The book’s world was heavily influenced by both Ancient Egypt and pre-Columbian American people. Even though the scant 300 pages wasn’t enough to developed a complex world to its fullest potential, the book was able to immerse me in the world, which will probably be expanded in the already announced sequel.

The book started a little bit slow but built up intensity after the first 100 pages. In some moments I wished there were more details in the description of the different countries, but I found a lot of useful information on the wiki listed at the end of the novel, and I found the world very interesting.

My final mark: 4/5. It’s a slow burn of novel, and in some moments it seemed to run out of space to develop the world, something that probably will be solved with the publish of the next books of the saga that seem to have great potential.

Recently, I took a casual interest in these myths, but I couldn't find anything about her appearance and looks in the short timespan historical research is able to keep my attention, at least for such small details of a secondary character in a very convoluted legend.

But I can't stop wondering if there's any mention, beyond her hair (black and wavy), of her looks.

And if anyone is willing to go further, I would like to know about Lancelot's appareance too, since I quit long before I reached any mention of him.

Few characters in Arthuriana vary from story to story quite as much as Morgan le Faye. In contemporary tales, she’s often cast as the ultimate evil, as powerful as Merlin without any of his wise morality, constantly opposing Arthur and his knights, with her mothering Mordred specifically to undermine and destroy his father being the ultimate catalyst for Camelot’s downfall. I’m curious how we got here. The earliest appearance that I know of is Geoffrey of Monmouth, whose Morgan did nothing sinister and only appeared in the final hour to heal/inter Arthur. Mallory maintains this, but adds in a lifetime of opposing Arthur with sorcery. There, she’s a sort of feminine counterpart to Sir Breuce san Pitie; where he is a dark reflection of knighthood without chivalry, she is a corruption of Guinevere, Elaine, Isolde, Lynette, and Elaine: a lady who works her charms—magical or otherwise—not to protect, enrich, or ennoble the people in their lives, but to entrap and ensnare. But like Breuce, she’s never brought to justice, never even actively pursued, just a frequent obstacle with little to no motivation or character exploration. I know I’ve skipped a lot of the romances, so I guess my cumulative question is when did Morgan first get painted as a villain, and why? And beyond the author’s motivations, what are Morgan’s? Why does she delve into the sinister?

Keep in mind, my son is 4 years old, so everything is an original to him.

I had to work late into the evening yesterday, and he was just going to bed when I got home. I had left home for the office nearly 14 hours prior, had a long day, lots of meetings, traffic, etc.

When I walked through the door, I was exhausted, run down, and starving. My wife hugged me and asked how my day was, and I replied, "Done. It was a good day, but has got me exhausted. I just want to grab a bite and go to bed. I'm hungry."

From my son's bedroom, I hear him shout, "Hi Hungry! Nice to meet you!"

Not only did it make me laugh, but I completely forgot about how hungry and tired I was. I went to his bedroom, and we laughed together about it. It was exactly what I needed.
