Hi, I was just wondering if anyone could recommend or not if becoming a member of the Geological Society of America was beneficial ie is paying yearly dues for this organization worth it in the long run?
I just graduated from University w/ a geology degree & need to work on applying & branching out more for jobs / volunteer work. Does membership look good on resumes / can I score some connections through the society that will aid in my future career?

Hello paleonerds!
I came across a free webinar that is being hosted by the Geological Society of America on pursuing a career in paleontology on Wed, Apr 24, 2019, from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT. I encourage all of our subscribers who are interested in making a career of paleontology to attend and learn from both the government and private sectors. As you all know, a career in paleontology is difficult and very competitive, but hopefully this will give insight into those the truly wish to make into the field.

Anyone else in Seattle for the GSA conference?
So Last Saturday to Wednesday at was at the GSA conference in Denver . While I was there, I came across an interesting poster presentation: PokΓ©mon Go: Using Augmented Reality to Teach Biogeography, by Ryan Morgan at Tarleton State University.
He used pokemon go to have students survey populations of animals and perform group analysis on the results.
If you would like a copy of his poster or to reach out to him, he can be reached at RMORGAN@tarleton.edu.
(He's also working on a similar paper anlyizing the Gen 1 games)
When I was younger, me and my dad were looking at a map of North America, when he pointed out that a number of huge lakes - including Great Bear Lake, Great Slave Lake, Lake Athabasca, Lake Winnipeg and the Great Lakes - seem to cut an almost linear northwest-southeast slash across the continent. He wondered why that was. Now I do too. Is this just a coincidence, or is there a common link between them that causes them to do this? I know there was once a large glacial lake in the area, could that have something to do with it?
