A list of puns related to "Fibre Channel"
Hi all, I've had an LTO4 drive for the better part of 3 years that I got while back in college and I had used it with FreeNAS 11 u2 (I think) back then to backup so essential data connecting it with a QLogic QLE2462. I now need to recover some of that data and would like to start using tape to backup a small amount of data offsite. The thing is back in old FreeNAS the QLogic card and the tape drive were essentially plug and play but now that appears to not be the case. I have been away from FreeBSD for about 2 1/2 years so I am a little rusty when it comes to the shell.
I was able to follow this guide and and get the card to at least respond. It went from no IR led to the IR led being enabled and all the connectivity lights on both ports flashing but it still seems to not be talking to the tape drive as indicated by the slow flashing lights and it not showing up under /dev/sa0 or /dev/nsa0. I'm not sure if I need to change the tunable since it's, at least to my understanding, not running as a SAN but as a HBA but I also don't understand how the values of the tunables work and don't want to go poking around if I risk breaking or corrupting something.
If any extra info is needed let me know I can also post the full dmesg or grep certain parts of it if that would be helpful.
While searching for SFP 10G network adapters I often stumble upon "FC Network adapter" cards, which I do not quite understand. They seem to have normal SFP connections, be a FC HBA and run at the expected 8GBit FC speeds, but are also somehow advertised as "network adapters". An example for this is the "QLogic PX2810403-20" card.
Does this mean that these cards can run in FC HBA or Ethernet mode, or is it just a fancy way to say it supports stuff like Fibre Channel over Ethernet? Or are they just completely mislabeled?
Web searches sadly didn't help at all - I either landed on a shop site for such a card or the definition for FCoE.
Both servers have
2x 300gb 15k and 4x 600gb 15k sas hard drives connected to a Perc 6/i raid controller. Plus I believe I have a spare 600gb drive Ill throw in.
Ram: 48gb ram (6x8gb) ECC
Processor: Dual x5570
IDrac Enterprise
However, one power supply is dead (3x good), and one stick of ram is bad (11x good).
Also have some 4gb qlogic fibre cards
2x 4port (QLE2463)
2x 2port (QLE2462)
8x 1port (QLE2460)
Cards worked great for sharing storage between freenas (truenas) and an esxi server.
$250 for everything. Pickup near the MKE airport.
These have outgrown my homelab and need to find a new home. They all still go well. No idea what they are worth, but it is hard tracking down this type of gear in Australia.
I have managed this 3par for over 4 years, and it's been flawless. I've had an HPE support contract, so it's had new disks and a brand new controller in its lifetime.Β The software is a little out of date but updates are straightforward. Reset to OOBE and completely wiped.
The 3Par has been always underutilised and used as a backup seed since retirement.
Looking for offers around 5-6k. The item is posted elsewhere and I will decide the final sale price.
As it's quite a big item I'm happy for collection or arrange delivery if close by.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
I have been reading the TrueNAS documentation, and it does support fiber channel. But when I plug my QLogic 2460 single port in it does not show it in the iscsi menu. I do not have any thing plugged into it.
Does it support this hba, and do i need something connected to it for anything to show up under the iscsi menu? I was going to order a dish shelf for it later if i knew i could support it.
This might sound like a dumb question but just bear with me.
I've only worked with DAS units and Dell PowerEdge servers. Every server we have that needs storage expansion is connected to a DAS using a SAS cable and a PERC (PowerEdge RAID Controller), so I'm used to the idea that to be able to configure RAID on the storage system, you need to have a PERC HBA, which is essentially a SAS HBA with a hardware RAID controller embedded. If I just use a SAS HBA I'll only have JBOD and no RAID capabilities unless I'm going the software RAID route, which as I understand, ESXi still isn't supporting.
Now to my current problem. we purchased a new storage system for two of our servers and I was asked to directly attach it to these servers using FC HBA, which is something that the storage system supports.
Now I've never used FC before to connect storage and I don't know if there are FC HBAs that have RAID controllers embedded or not, or if this is even a thing. I searched everywhere and read any document that I could find and no one is talking about this at all.
So, my question is, when working with FC HBAs, should I treat it as a SAS HBA and look for an HBA with a hardware RAID controller embedded? or am I missing a VERY obvious thing here and should not be worried about this issue at all? If I directly attach the storage system to my servers using FC am I going to have just a bunch of disks? or do all FC HBAs support RAID?
Seeing no one talking about this at all makes me feel like I'm just not understanding how FC works.
btw, the storage system I'm referring to is PowerVault ME4024
I have an HP DL380v6 with two FC adapters. LPE1102 and LPE1150. I understand they can be used to connect to a SAN or disk shelf, but is there any other use for them? I'm wondering if I'm not using a disk shelf is there any reason to keep them installed?
I made a post a while back looking for feedback on some Fibre Channel disk enclosures to see if anyone had any or had any experience with them outside of what I can find for 10yr old blog and forum posts.
Specifically, I am looking for anything based on the Xyratex RS1604 or equivalent. There were different OEMs using them like Compellent, 3par, and Netapp.
I am interested in these specifically because of the Sata interposers, and the fact that according to the datasheets they *should* support larger capacity disks.
My research on the hardware has turned up the interposer interface as an Emulex BR2401 Sata2-FC bridge, and the interfaces as Emulex SOC422 FC switches on the backplane.
These are supposed to directly support the sata2 spec so they should be able to use larger capacity hard drives and not have the same issues as the infamous LSI sas controllers with a clipped address space. (2tb access limitations)
I have been watching several of these for a while, but I am wary of spending several hundred dollars on shipping these things if they will not work. On the other hand, if this does work, I want to get two of them. :)
Preferrably in 3par-yellow to brighten up my rack.
Before I embarrass myself with a wildly mispriced [FS] post I wanted to check to make sure I am not completely off base on pricing of these units.
These are 3Par T400/T800 disk shelves from a large array, but can be used individually as JBOD. 3.5" SATA drives are loaded into magazines (4 drives per magazine) and each shelf takes 10 magazines, for a total of 40 drive capacity.
I got it up and running in a Dell setup with a cheap dual port 4Gb Fibre channel HBA, with a connection going to each controller on the shelf which allowed for a MPIO setup in Server 2016.
I was thinking $100 for a single shelf or $75/each if you buy more than one. Unfortunately given the size/weight of these they would need to be picked up locally (near Boulder, CO). Is this reasonable?
Hello!
So i wanted to passthru said card above to a VM because i want to experiment with it inside a VM but im getting the problem with "A Hypervisor feature is not available to the user" and im not sure where ive gone wrong because i gone through the SurveyDDA thing and it told me it was assignable but its not letting me start the VM.
Any idea on what could be happening?

Hi, i have been studying the Nexus OS the past week or so, i come from a heavy IOS and ASA background so for the most part it has been pretty straightforward so far. Things like VDC's and the general management of the devices are pretty straight forward to, I picked up VDC's fairly easily having worked with ASA multi-contexts for a while now. Other areas like fabricpath seem like a good idea and pretty straight forward to depending what your knowledge of IS-IS is as well as VPC's.
Now for fibre channel i remember studying this about 2 years ago but for the most part it has all left my brain even if i took notes on it (haven't reread them properly yet). But i wanted to ask, what is the more popular way of doing things as far as storage etc.. goes here with Fibre Channel and FCoE? FCoE seems like the simplified way of doing things (granted i have touched on that yet so i could be wrong there) and Fibre Channel on Nexus (or just in general) seems like a far more complex way.
Which technology is more used these days or is there something else on the horizon that will take over both?
I've be given 2x ibm 249624e https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IBM-2498-24E-8Gb-24-Port-Fibre-Channel-FC-SAN-Switch-45W0391-8x-Active-Ports/362739481661?hash=item5474f53c3d:g:HYMAAOSw6OFdZ-NF and some PX2810403 fibre channel cards, as I don't need san storage (yet) are these devices only optimised for Fibre channel or can I use them for something else like IP networking ?
Hi Guys,
I have a fibre channel SAN providing a LUN to a RHEL8 machine. Now usually to view disk IO, I would use iotop or glances. However, I don't have any visibility for the IO going to through the fibre channel unless I look at things like the Netapp dashboard.
Are there some tools that I don't know about to view the IO? Any advice here is appreciated.
I have a LTO4FC drive and I want to connect it to Windows XP/7. I have Qlogic QLE 2460 PCIE card. I use molex power adapter to power the LTO4FC drive as I don't have an enclosure and connected it to the QLE2460 using Multimode Duplex Fiber Optic Cable LC to LC. Is it plug and play like USB and SCSI? I don't see it in device manager or backup exec 2010.
I have a few extra things lying around that I need to get rid of to make some space. Thanks in advance for taking a look.
