In The Fellowship of the Ring the clasps of Boromir's cloak appear to have been fashioned after the Crown of Elendil, who died at the War of the Last Alliance that lead to Sauron's (first) defeat. The same design is later seen in The Return of the King for Aragon's coronation crown.

Big XII schools as the Fellowship of the Ring

It is the off-season, and as much as we all enjoy giving praise to the almighty Portal, we also crave characterizations of our favorite football playing institutions. Here are the 10 Big XII schools and each member of the Fellowship they represent.

Texas – Frodo: Frodo is the main protagonist and face of the franchise that audiences root for and want to see succeed. Texas is a national brand that gets recognition year in and year out for being a top program that audiences also want to see succeed. Also much like Frodo, Texas doesn’t really do much or accomplish anything.

Texas Tech – Sam: Sam is the unsung hero of the fellowship, without his behind the scenes hard work and determination, the ring would never have made it to the fires of Mt. Doom. Texas Tech is also the unsung hero of the Big XII. The entire Big XII stigma of high scoring, fun to watch offense, was pioneered by Texas Tech.

TCU & Baylor - Merry & Pippin: Mostly I just wanted the four Texas schools to be the four Hobbits

Oklahoma – Aragorn: With a huge Legacy to live up to, we are all waiting to see if Oklahoma will take up the mantle of top program again, much like Aragorn is the rightful king of men, even if they are not ready to do so yet.

Oklahoma State – Boromir: A leader in his own right, and eager to show Middle Earth he is ready to take the stage as a major player. "Gondor has no king"

Iowa State – Legolas: Iowa State is the northern most school located right in the heart of B1G country, Legolas also comes from the northern region of Mirkwood, right in the heart of the Woodland Realm. (I guess B1G schools = elves)

West Virginia – Gimli: Bearded mountain men

Kansas State – Gandalf the Grey: Obviously this a post just so I could equate the recently retired Purple Wizard to the Grey Wizard the Fellowship loses

Kansas – Gandalf the White: and then equate the unexpected return of the White Wizard to the unexpected return of the Mad Hatter!

Having read the Lord of the Rings for the first time, i was surprised at how little planning the Fellowship had

I mean, i understand the argument between Aragorn and Gandalf on whether to cross Caradhras or go to Moria. But you would think that they would have at least decided on what to do after they cross the mountains. They had all the time in the world in Rivendell to look carefully at maps. Instead, they spend a lot if time debating whether to go directly to Mordor or to visit Minas Tirith first, which indirectly results in the breaking of the Fellowship as Frodo left them to meditate on his choice. I know that as Elrond said they couldn't predict everything on their way but they could have done some planning.

War of the Ring (2nd) strategy? Fellowship Repeatedly Doomed

So I finally snagged a copy of War of the Ring at the behest of everyone here in the recommendations thread. LOVE the game - like a militarized version of SW: Rebellion that gets me all nostalgic. My problem is I have one person I play with, and she consistently wants to play the shadow player.

That's alright and all - I love playing the underdog. Rebels are fun in Rebellion too. But I feel we (or I) might be doing something wrong. The fellowship just gets CRUSHED from the get-go. She'll usually wind up with at least 4 dice in the hunt pool after the action roll (allocating 3), and it seems every time I move more than once in a round (and sometimes even moving once), she nails the hunt. I can't make it more than 2 spaces without losing a companion or getting my corruption bar halfway.

Am I doing something wrong as the FP player? Would appreciate any strategy/insights (on this or other things)!

In the Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf refuses to possess the one ring when offered it by Frodo, stating it would imbue him with power β€œtoo great to imagine”. Both Sauron and Gandalf are Maiar. So, how did Sauron create something that so magnifies power? Why couldn’t other Maia do the same?

In the book, if Sauron recaptures the ring, he will again become immensely powerful. When Gandalf discovers the ring, he tells Frodo he can’t possess it himself because it would give him immense power and be a temptation. If both Gandalf and Sauron are Maiar, how was Sauron able to create something that would magnify power to that degree?

Edit; As a follow up question, would Gandalf with the ring have more power than Sauron with the ring? Since Sauron put his own power into the ring, repossessing it just restores him to his previous power, while Gandalf would have all that in addition to his own power, right?

I'm reading the silmarillion, the hobbit, the fellowship of the ring, the two towers and the return of the king for the first time. And i've got a question about glorfindel.

Recently i finished the silmarillion book and then went straight to the hobbit, and now i'm in the last pages of the fellowship of the ring. Glorfindel and the balrog he fought during the fall of gondolin on idril's secret path, both died in a duel; falling to their death. Then in the fellowship of the ring another(?) glorfindel aids the hobbits and aragorn to cross the bruinen. It seems odd that there would've been two glorfindels. I haven't read the two towers nor the return of the king yet! I can't find anything on how they are connected, if it's the same glorfindel from the elder days or not, as from what i've read so far. Is it explained somehow in the next two books (if that's the case, no spoilers please), in tolkiens answer to a letter, or not at all?

The Fellowship of the Ring made all sorts of heroic moves and defiant stands 'for Frodo,' but they were only together for a couple days tops

Boromir, Gimli, Legolas etc only met Frodo at Rivendell. They tried to cross a mountain pass, then they went through Moria, then Gandalf fell, Boromir died, and they split up, never to meet again.

Why the heck do any of these guys care about Frodo? They hardly knew him!

Aragorn took Boromir's bracers and wore them to honor him, but he only knew Boromir for like a week!
