I feel we should no longer centre the health and environmental benefits of a plant based society when promoting Veganism, because neither require the ending of animal exploitation to attain. What do you guys think?

My view is that Reducitarianism, when ignoring the animal victims, is a perfectly viable option for the environment and an individuals (humans) health. Example, eating 1 chicken wing a month is negligible in the context of emissions and health but still required the confinement and gassing of a sentient being. Another example. Eliminating the consumption of fish and pastured mammals, reducing overall animal products to less than 2% of calories, finding ways to process animal waste to reduce the pollution coming from factory farms, reforesting pasture and changing monocrop agriculture to permaculture would probably be enough to reduce the environmental and human health concerns of carnism to close to or on par with veganism, but there would still be animals being bred, caged and slaughtered by society.

(Edit: my view has changed on the next paragraph. Keeping it for posterity.) Same thing in reverse. Imagine you had rescue chickens who you fed their eggs back to and supplemented, gave medical attention to and fed and cared for them till there natural death, but then also ate some of their eggs regularly. This would likely have a negative effect on your personal health in terms of cholesterol and heart disease but would still be, i feel, ethically within veganism. (Edit: a better example would be someone eating previously dead animals, terrible for your health but without a victim.)

Not sure how coherent my thoughts are, but i wanna know what you guys feel about this? Am I wrong in my reasoning?

Anyone doing research into Environmental Health and Cognition?

Hi everyone!

So I am interested in research into cognition for those who have been exposed to an environmental hazard (I am specifically interested in geological processes, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, etc), but am also interested in hazards that would not have any legal ramifications (such as ground water contamination by a company or lead exposure, etc).

Is anyone working on this, or know somewhere who is?

Thanks!

MBA Student: Project Looking at Cost Savings and Reduced Environmental Impact From Changes that Can Be Made by Board Game Companies.

I know this topic is not new, but I find it very interesting and impactful the more I progress through my business courses. So much so it is now the topic for my MBA program project.

I’m looking at the positive and negative impacts of board game companies using more conservative manufacturing approaches. ( For example: smaller game boxes, reducing throw away plastic waste, unnecessary components and packaging, using different raw materials, etc…) I want to present several ways on how this could positively and negatively affect profits, environment, and user experience.

I've found several places on boardgamegeek and on r/boardgames talking about this, as well as some youtubers such as Drive Through Games having discussions on the topic. I'm curious what ideas some of you have or have seen and if you think it would have any impact on the company, the environment, or the user's experience.

I'm not opposed to mini's and is not my focus, but anything anyone might see as a small change that could have profound impact would help me delve deeper into this idea.

Edit: Thank you for all your comments, While carbon footprint is a part of it, my thoughts were on a broader scope of all the outcomes from a manufactures decisions while trying to maximize profits. How would a single decision affect costs, profits, player experience, and the environment. Those were my four measurements for each business decision. For example, smaller box size reduces shipping and material costs and saves on the environment and may negatively (or positively) affect the customer. My focus is on small publishers and how each decision either positively or adversary affects those four factors.

Masters in Occupational/ environmental health and safety question

I have a bachelors in business and am wanting to get into safety. I’ve been looking into Columbia Southern online. It’s a cheaper program but still gives me some safety certifications as well. GSP I believe is what it was.

I office with a guy who works in safety and he said the program would be fine and he has some friends that have done it as well.

He also said having a bachelors in business and a masters in safety would be better than 2 safety degrees. I was worried the business degree would hurt me.

Looking for any advice or suggestions on this idea.

Thanks!

YSK about The RBA Code of Conduct: A Business Standard for Human Rights, Fair Labor Practices, Health & Safety, Environmental Responsibility, and Ethical Business Practices.

The RBA Code may not be the single answer to all the woes that plague us in the workforce today - but it would sure as heck be better than whatever it is we've got now.

(I am not in any way affiliated with the RBA, but I have worked to implement and prove compliance at my own employers facilities.)

Here's a few highlights of what employers MUST do if they wish to have an RBA Certification:

  • No worker does more than 60 hours worked per week

  • No more than 6 consecutive work days without a day off.

  • All overtime must be voluntary

  • Ethics & Grievance reporting hotline available to all workers

  • All Greivance reporting must have the option to report fully anonymously.

  • Non-retaliation against those with greivances must be strictly prevented and guarded against.

  • Transparent and consistent wages

  • Freedom of association to join, form, or avoid Union membership.

  • Strict Safety Controls

  • Controls against exposure to dangerous chemicals

  • Strict pollution controls for air, liquid, and solid waste

  • No unfair advantage, bribery, conflicts of interest, etc - even when such practices may have been locally/culturally acceptable in the past

  • Disciplinary actions cannot use wage deductions, or be discriminatory/harassing

  • A whole array of anti harassment and anti discrimination requirements.

  • Required to afford the same rights and protections to contractors and all other workers as they would to direct employees.

  • Protections against forced labor, child labor, indentured workers, etc.

And to ice the cake:.

  • All of these elements have to be codified by written policies from the top down.

  • RBA members have to prove compliance to these on a regular basis, often yearly in one form or another.

  • If a site or company fails, they may lose the right to do business with certain customers that require it. (If they can't fix it well enough or soon enough.)

To be totally clear, this is Already required for these companies and all their suppliers wanting to do business with them: Apple, Microsoft, AMD, Intel, Samsung,BMW, Bose, Ford, Foxconn, Walmart, Amazon, Tesla, and many others.

Whatever other failings those companies may have, this is a step in the right direction - even if I have no idea how Amazon and Walmart are passing their audits as members.

So if you see member companies violating these types of things, they should definitely be reported somehow.

Question about Careers in Policy and Environmental Public Health

Hello everyone! I am an undergrad student currently in the process of career exploration. I have discovered that I know what I want to do, but I am unsure if it is something I can make a career out of.

Broadly speaking, I am interested in public health as it relates to urban environments and sustainability.

More specifically, I am really interested in understanding how the built environment (transportation, buildings, infrastructure, etc.) and social environment of an area affect public health. I would love to be involved in designing policies to help improve these factors. I am also very interested in understanding how the governments of other countries, states, and cities have implemented these kinds of policies and then seeing if these policies could be modified for the region I am working in.

I am from the US, but would also be interested in understanding and addressing issues like these at both the domestic and international levels. Are there public health careers that I can pursue that would align with my interests?

Thank you!
