AskScience AMA Series: Hi! We're Drs. Rebecca Schmidt from UC-Davis, and Cindy Lawler, from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, part of NIH, and we work on how environmental factors can increase risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Ask us anything!

Today is the 12th annual World Autism Awareness Day. In honor of that, we're here to answer your questions about how our environment can influence risk of developing Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, in our most vulnerable population -- our children.

Autism encompasses a group of complex disorders involving brain development. Autism symptoms appear very early in childhood and include difficulties in social communication as well as restricted patterns of behavior and interests. Once considered rare, current estimates indicate that autism affects about one in 59 children in the United States.

Scientists now know that ASD is most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of NIH, supports autism research aimed at understanding how environmental exposures early in life may combine with genetic susceptibility to alter brain development to create the core symptoms of autism. One way we do that is to support researchers, like Dr. Schmidt, on her work focusing on maternal folic acid intake during pregnancy.

Her research has found that maternal folic acid, the synthetic form of folate, is one of the first modifiable factors identified to date with the potential to reduce occurrence of ASD by 40 percent if taken near conception. Folic acid appears to protect against ASD especially in mothers and children who are genetically susceptible to ASD. Further, her provide evidence that folic acid supplements near conception might counter risk associated with gestational environmental contaminant exposures, like pesticides, air pollution, and phthalates.

Her recent work shows that taking prenatal vitamins that contain folic acid in the first month of pregnancy is also associated with reduced recurrence of autism by about

Are qualifications useful or necessary? Chartered Institute of Marketing or Digital Marketing Institute.

For someone looking to start a career in marketing, in particular digital marketing, and doesn't have much previous direct marketing experience or an academic background (e.g. a degree in marketing, communications), are the qualifications offered by CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) and DMI (Digital Marketing Institute) beneficial? Or, are some of the free certifications offered by Google, Semrush, Hubspot etc enough?

For context I am a graduate, but in history and English literature, not marketing and communications. I am also in the UK. I have work experience in customer service and some back office admin., so general transferable experience. I do have an IG account which I am using as a personal project. I am currently doing some free courses that are available, such as Hubspot Inbound Marketing Certification and Google Digital Garage Fundamentals of Digital Marketing, but I'd like to know if more "official" certifications like those from CIM or DMI would be worthwhile? Specifically, CIM Level 3 or Level 4 Certificate in Professional Digital Marketing, or DMI Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing.

Academically accomplished finance student with Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and current Master of Financial Engineering from Ivy League school wants to pivot to finance department of environmental org -- ideas and thoughts?

Hi everyone, I wanted to get some input here. I have some pretty decent credentials in my opinion, with a CFA charter (if you are not familiar with the CFA, think of it as a CPA for finance) and an engineering master's degree from a target school. I have been applying to a lot of finance jobs, but a combination of declined offers and a mix of reticence about working on "Wall Street," combined with my growing passion to do something good for the planet and try to make a difference (this happens when you get older) make me want to work at an environmentally-focused non profit firm.

Now, this is no midlife crisis as I've lived my entire life loving animals, nature, and the planet. When I was a child, I would draw pictures of animals incessantly and read about them. I was addicted to dinosaurs and could name a couple dozen of them at age 10.

Since my father had a heart attack when I was 11 years old, my family began to eat really healthy and cook everything at home. My love for food and where our food comes from grew with me as I aged (am now 30) and has been the catalyst for my love of nature and its wonders; this has led me on a journey, for the past 2 decades, to understand our food supply chain, what constitutes good holistic food, sustainable practices, how our mass production factory farm system is causing a lot of havoc, etc... I even became vegetarian for a few years.

I appreciate the awe and diversity of our planet and I have seen first hand how our abuse of it has caused severe negative effects -- my wife has had infertility issues (as do a growing number of women) and we feel this is because of the toxic environment we live in. Chronic illness is on the rise overall. Our society is too focused on cheaper, faster, more convenient, without regard to its side effects.

I love the outdoors and backpacking; my wife and our 2 dogs go multiple times a year into the California wilderness and are at peace and ease when we do it. There is nothing I love more. I also enjoy wild foraging, fishing, gardening, and composting.

My ethnic background is half Asian and half Jewish, and my wife is from India. I have a comprehensive worldview and believe that diversity is the best thing about life on earth. I think I understand different cultures, people, viewpoints, customs, and traditions. Nothing is weird to me and I've seen (and eaten) it all.

As said, I have grown a bit tired of what the "corporate life" at a shark-tank Wall St firm entails. I am fine to take
