Can someone please explain to me how if at all the Spanish hacienda system in Latin America is like feudalism in Europe. I see similarities but I also see differences. Were haciendas merely economic units or were they separate but subordinate political units?
Were all hacendados made nobles or not? I read that Hernan Cortes was made Marquis of the Valley of Oaxaca in Mexico, and that some native leaders in an earlier phase were given encomiendas along with Spaniards. Encomiendas having their origin in the reconquista.
And how did one go about getting one granted?
I have searched up numerous articles, but nothing really makes sense to me. Can someone explain to me what each system exactly is, and how they differed?
A Spanish Friar from a Dominican Monastery, named Bartolomé de las Casals was called to trial to determine the human rights of natives in the new world. Arguing that the encomiendas system should be abolished, and was sinful. The trial...never had a proper verdict, but what if instead it ruled in favour of Bartolomé. With his policy of excommunicating people Who mistreated native peoples and refusing to hear to confession of people who owned encomiendas as bishop of Chiapas continuing? Leading to the encomiendas being abolished
NOTE: he did support the conversion of indigenous people to Christianity, once owned an encomiendas in Cuba (though he did free the native peoples of his first when he decided it was wrong) and didn’t condemn African slavery until a lot later in his life
Muchas gracias
So I'm not even sure if this is the right place so apologies if that's the case So I've always been bugged by the colony system in eu4, part of this is how slow and static it is. Spain gained control of huge swathes of America very quickly and this isn't represented in the game. Everythings also either yours or it isn't which isn't an accurate representation of how things were at the time. As a history student I've recently read about the encomienda system developed by Spain. Rather than settler colonies in early America conquistadors were set up almost as feudal Lords with natives being forced to pay tribute to them. This meant that Spain had control of a huge amount of American land (though not necessarily direct control) in game this entire system is represented by a single event that doesn't change anything. In order to improve colonialism I suggest introducing this system as a mechanic whereby instead of establishing settler colonies or conquering and cording provinces European nations can set up encomiendas. This would work in two ways. Firstly for open provinces that would normally require a colonist a European nation will have the ability to set up an encomienda. This would be by a button on the army screen. This would then begin a battle (like the purge natives button) and after inevitably winning the euoprean army will lose an amount of manpower based on the number of natives still alive in the province. This loss of manpower is the garrison needed to keep the natives in line and paying tribute.
This will then give the European nation a small income boost as well as resource production (with some resources being unavailable as the natives didn't grow enough to sell) for example firs they've hunted or being forced to slave away in mines. The manpower lost to this garrison will also be taken as a permanent loss of that country's manpower total while the encomienda is under their control. This would allow nations like Spain to quickly gain large tracts of land at the cost of manpower enriching them but weakening there armies.
However encomiendas will be similar to colonies on that if in a war they are occupied an invading army can take them for its own. Or in a peace deal free them very cheaply. Their will also be a diplo action where a nation can ask another to abandon their encomiendas in a region they mean to fully settle with the abandoning nation gaining development in their other encomiendas to show the exodus of people and natives (in a per
... keep reading on reddit ➡For some context, I’m a second year history major and for my world Christianity class, I’m planning on writing a paper on how the encomienda system helped speed up the conversion of natives in New Spain. I’m looking for sources on databases but I was wondering if there were any good book primary sources that anyone would recommend. Thanks in advance.
