A list of puns related to "Edomites"
Just generally curious if thereβs genetic evidence that Edomites and Hebrew people had a shared ancestor that would have made a basis for the story of Jacob and Esau. I found a comment here from three years ago where someone claimed that the Edomites had a language that was similar enough to Hebrew that they could recognize each other as linguistically related. It was also stated that Hebrew takes on the Edomites may have been more sympathetic compared to others.
I realize that a shared ancestry will eventually exist if you go back far enough for any group, but wondering if it shows up in BCs roughly where itβs claimed in the story. I also donβt have a lot of knowledge about what the possibilities are with genetically comparing people back to those eras through either people alive right now or through very old remains.
Which would you choose?
Essentially which place do the people look closest to your ideal of Biblical era Canaanites and Jews?
Does anyone know what the primary source is of the native Levantine part of the ancestry in Palestinians?
I've been going down the "Hebrew Israelites" rabbit hole on YouTube and seeing all this stuff about how these people are the true Israelites, the Jewish people in Israel are the "fake Jews", and that white people (specifically with non Israelite father's) are Edomites. Is any of this historically accurate? What do the academics have to say about this stuff?
I plan on spending the next couple month learning as much scholarship as I can on the edomites: their language, culture, cultic practices, etc. And how they relate to Israelites. What are Some good historical-critical introductions that you guys could recommend.?
I would like to find some more information on these two groups and how the developed through history. Can you recommend a resource or two?
I posted this in r/Bible and they suggested I move it here.
In Obadiah 1:10-14, it seems as if the nation of Edom not only refused to help the Israelites but actually looted them and assisted their enemies!
From a little researching, I found that most people think that this happened either in the Babylonian conquest of Judah or much, much earlier during Jehoram of Judah's reign.
Does anyone have some knowledge of the history here?
Did the Edomites think that they were descended from Esau and thus a related tribe to the Israelites? Same thing with the Moabites and Ammonites? Also is there any evidence that the Arabs before the 7th century considered themselves to be descended from Ishmael and Abraham?
Your hatred for the European is hatred for Japheth's bloodline. Edomites were ruddy (not much lighter in color than "blacks") this entire movment is based on calling whites the devil which makes no sense. Whites are of gods chosen through Noah's blood. Yes some edomites may have bred with Greeks, Italians and middle easterners but the "white" is actually not a devil. Whites are loved in gods eyes just as much as your people. You need to end this false doctrine within your movment or God will judge you just as a edomite (a man of hate).
βBut you are not to detest an Edomi, because he is your brother; and you are not to detest an Egyptian, because you lived as a foreigner in his land. The third generation of children born to them may enter the assembly of Adonai.β-Deuteronomy 23:8-9
From verse 8 of Deuteronomy Chapter 23, weβre told something really interesting.
Whereas Ammon and Moab has been excluded from entering Israel, weβre told that Edom and Egypt shall be included!
For their offenses against Israel, Edom and Egypt were forced to suffer a temporary exclusion of three generations but after that, the restriction was removed.
When the Israelites of Mosesβ time heard this, Iβm sure many of them were quite taken aback.
First, why did God allow Edom to be one of the nations that could enter the assembly of Israel?
The reason given is because Edom βis your brotherβ.
How exactly is Edom Israelβs brother?
Well, recall that EDOM is just another name for ESAU.
How so?
Well, in Hebrew βEdomβ literally means βthe red oneβ.
This was the nickname given to Esau (the son of Isaac) because of his ruddy complexion and reddish hair.
Interestingly, the great King David also had similar physical features.
Now do you recall who Esauβs twin brother was?
If you said βJacobβ, youβre right on the money andβ¦
β¦recall it was Jacob whose name was later changed to Israel.
So Edom and Israel are brothers and God had every intention of honoring this relationship.
The story of Esauβs relationship with Jacob reflects just how precise the Lord is in handing out or holding back blessings based on how His chosen nation Israel is treated.
When most folks think of Esau and Jacob, they think about how Jacob deceived Esau by taking his birthright, and then how Esau intended to kill Jacob for being deceived.
However, what a lot of people tend to overlook is that when Jacob returned to the land of Canaan with his two wives, children and a number of servants, the two brothers actually reconciled with each other.
In addition, God had promised Isaac that He would also bless Esau.
Because of this, Edom was to be forgiven for doing basically the same thing to Israel that Ammon and Moab did, namely refusing to let Israel pass through their land and instead forcing them to march all the way around Edom on their way to Canaan.
