Dolby vision

Hi everyone,

I have the LG CX. What an amazing tv for gaming.

Just a general discussion here.

Am I only the one that doesn’t see hardly any difference at all in Dolby vision and HDR 10. Tested out a load of games. Gears 5, Halo infinite, horizon 5 to name a few.

I keep switching back and fourth to determine if I could see any differences. Went back to certain scenes or areas.

If anything, slightly brighter in Dolby vision, but less colour. Is it just over hyped. And a little bumped up version of HDR?

If anything I prefer HDR 10

What’s everybody else’s thoughts?

Dolby Vision Buffering Fix for Kodi

Hi, this post is regarding a fix for the Dolby Vision buffering in Kodi. Please use the below code which I wrote by modifying some other versions of code that I found on the web.

Since Kodi's inbuilt video player doesn't support Dolby Vision Video Playback properly so I wrote this code which contains almost all possibilities of Dolby Vision in a filename and plays such videos in an external player: "Just Video Player", which needs to be installed separately from the Google Play Store.

Here's my code:

https://paste.kodi.tv/livenoquyu

The above code (script) needs to be added as "playercorefactory.xml" file in the below location in Kodi:

/Android/data/org.xbmc.kodi/files/.kodi/userdata/

Please note that only Dolby Vision MKV files can be rewinded and forwarded using Just Video Player while that is not possible with Dolby Vision MP4 files.

EDIT: As requested by @peno64 in the below comments I'm pasting the code here as well:

<playercorefactory> <players> <player name="Just Player" type="ExternalPlayer" audio="false" video="true"> <filename>com.brouken.player</filename> <hidexbmc>true</hidexbmc> <playcountminimumtime>120</playcountminimumtime> </player> </players> <rules action="prepend"> <rule internetstream="true"> <rule filename=".[.]DV[.].|.\sDV\s.|.[.]Dv[.].|.\sDv\s.|.[.]dv[.].|.\sdv\s.|.D[/]VISION.|.\sDOVI\s.|.[.]DOVI[.].|.\sDoVi\s.|.[.]DoVi[.].|.\sDovi\s.|.[.]Dovi[.].|.\sdovi\s.|.[.]dovi[.].|.\sDOVi\s.|.[.]DOVi[.]." player="Just Player"/> </rule> <rule video="true" player="dvdplayer"/> </rules> </playercorefactory>

Disable Dolby Vision in Halo Infinite (it's broken) and use HDR instead + Suggested HDR Settings

EDIT: HDTVTest Video Analysis and Breakthrough of the Issue

Hello World,

just a quick notice about Halo Infinite and Dolby Vision on Xbox Series X|S.

Unlike all the other DV games I've tried so far on my LG B7 OLED, Halo Infinite is currently broken when using Dolby Vision (even with newer LG OLEDs and also other Dolby Vision TVs): this because the actual game's Peak HDR Luminance won't exceed 300 nits when using Dolby Vision and there's nothing you can do to adjust this in-game (the "HDR Brightness" slider is gone when using it). 300 nits is almost "fake HDR" so you will only get a PQ similar to SDR and nothing else.

The only way to fix this right now is completely disable Dolby Vision from Xbox Dashboard video options (both Dolby Vision for Movies and Games flags should be disabled) and launch the game in HDR.

Only this way you will be actually able to see the in-game "HDR Brightness" slider with Default 50 and which can go up to 100.

Here's what it actually does (measured with external equipment, thanks to EvilBoris ):

100 100% 10000nits

90 98% 8000nits

80 95% 6011nits

70 92% 4528nits

60 86% 2600nits

50 75% 946nits

40 74% 865nits

30 72% 722nits

20 69% 551nits

10 67% 450nits

0 63% 310nits

So for example if you have an LG OLED, here's the values you need:

  • If using HGIG: set HDR Brightness to 34 (which is around 800 actual nits);

  • If you're using regular DTM (Dynamic Tone Mapping): set HDR Brightness to 67 (which is around 4.000 actual nits).

In both cases leave the regular "Brightness" slider to Default 0.

You will finally have proper HDR luminance with this and the game will look MUCH better than both SDR and Dolby Vision.

It's really a shame that the first "native" DV title marketed by Microsoft is actually borked right now and does almost nothing more compared to SDR. I will also open a ticket on Halo Waypoint Support website and hopefully this will be sorted out in time.

In the meanwhile, enjoy the game in real HDR ;)

Cheers,

-P

So I know that Dolby Vision gets complicated with different profile layers, and metadata formats, and different devices. I was wondering how DV works on Plex these days. I tried DV about a year ago, and it wouldn't work on my TV. Just wondering if DV on the Plex/Shield combo works now? Any issues with FEL and MEL formats? Or profiles?

Edit: well, so far, half of you say it works perfectly, half of you say it works but with color issues and FEL playback fallback to MEL....so....idk what to think lol.

Best in-game audio setting when using Dolby Atmos or DTS:X for Headphones?

I read different opinions about the best in-game audio setting, when you use Dolby Atmos for Headphones with a wireless headset.

Sometimes I read posts where they advice to set in-game audio to Stereo and Headphones.
Other posts say that you have to choose Surround Sound with Speakers.

So, to get this out of the way.. what's the best setting if the game gives you several options when you use Dolby Atmos or DTS:X for Headphones?

For instance, in Battlefield V .. you have several options in-game.

Sound preset: Speakers / TV / Headphones / 3D Headphones
Output Configuration: Stereo / Surround / Auto

In this Reddit post, it says the optimal setting is:

Xbox processing - Dolby Atmos (in my opinion the best setup)

To achieve this setup:

Xbox settings menu

  • Display & Sound
  • Audio output
  • Headset audio: Dolby Atmos or DTS:X

In-game settings menu

  • Options
  • Audio
  • Sound preset: Headphones
  • Output configuration: stereo

But on other websites they say you have to choose Surround Sound in-game, otherwise the Dolby Atmos / DTS:X won't work.

Who has the definitive answer?

Dolby Vision and HDR10+, how important is it?

Looking to buy a new TV and it's confusing.

I looking at OLED or QLED in the 65-75 inch range. OLED is supposedly too dark and in most cases does not even get bright enough for the DV to work properly? I will mostly watch in a completely dark room. I watch normal movies but also watch on HBO max and Netflix when I am lazy. Both those services support DV but not HDR10+ it seems, so samsung seems to be a bad choice for me?

I read that newer TV's use AI to stop burn in from happening on OLEDs, so apart from the darkness they are good? If I can find an OLED TV with dolby vision that isn't too dark, do you recommend getting this over a samsung TV that is brighter with QLED but only has HDR10+?

I will not game at all on the TV, I only play on my PC nowadays. Obviously I want to have the TV for many years.

I'm looking at the SAMSUNG QE65Q80AATXXC 65" with I can find for 50% off at the moment, or the Samsung QE70Q60AAUXXC which is the same price. Or I will have to spend 50-100% more and get an OLED with dolby vision which might be so dark I can barely see anything. I would like to experience LOTR in good quality and then it seems that OLED with DV is the way to go. I can't fucking make up my mind.

Update 2

Okay, there's miles and miles of misinformation flying around in this thread, lets clarify a few things!

  • These are digital signal processor drivers, designed to work with stereo headphones. The source audio can be stereo or multi channel encoded. The game does NOT need to be encoded for regular Dolby Atmos or DTS format to gain benefit from this, it only enhances the effect. Looking up a list of Dolby Atmos supported games isn't required in the slightest, stop spreading that misinformation.

  • Your headphones can be connected any way you choose - either by plugging in the controller directly, or by tapping into the HDMI audio out through a connected device such as your TV or sound system. It's best to turn off any other signal processing features, such as "Surround" mode built into some headphones with a button toggle. Here's a screenshot of the audio settings on the Series X showing the output settings

  • Both Dolby and DTS come with apps for Xbox and Windows that allow you to fine tune the audio profile and equalizer. Here is a gallery of screenshots I took from my Series X using the XCloud streaming: https://imgur.com/a/SbVV6zd

  • It is NOT a subscription, it is a one time license fee for a real time digital signal processor driver that lasts over many devices. The drivers are for both Xbox and Windows, and have exactly the same applications available for each from their respected stores.

  • My recommended best value headphones that many many other review sites have praised for years are the HyperX Cloud II's. They are on sale right now for $60 USD: https://www.microsoft.com/en-US/search/shop/devices?q=HyperX . In the past, the cheaper HyperX CloudX use to be exactly the same headphones with just some accessory differences and a cable with inline controls, this is NO longer the case. They use slightly smaller drivers now and are no longer as good as the Cloud II's - be careful of outdated reviews.

New Dolby Vision input lag, after weeks with no problems

So I had no idea there were input lag issues with Dolby vision until last night where it hit like a ton of bricks and made everything unplayable. I'm now seeing there are a bunch of posts regarding this issue. I had no idea because there has been no lag since day 1 of using Dolby Vision for Gaming. I played through the full campaigns of Metro Exodus, Immortals and most recently Halo Infinite with no issue.

Last night, I started up Streets of Rage 4 and noticed huge input lag. I also thought it was weird that SOR4 was running in Dolby Vision as it usually runs in "Game" mode. I fired up Halo Infinite to check and lag is now present there too, even on the xbox home menu.

So why do you think I am just now having this problem? It was clearly not an issue over the last several weeks. For reference I have an XSX, Sony XH90 and Dolby Atmos Sony Soundbar. I'm not aware of any updates that could have caused this. XSX is plugged into the TV with enhanced DV on the input and using eARC from the TV to Soundbar.

Does OLED need Dolby Vision instead of HDR10?

Hey. I've recently got an LG C1 OLED. I am a physical media collector (call me old fashioned as you like), so its main use is for 4K Blu-Rays.

So far, I am really satisfied with it for the most part. HDR certainly pops. However, I am kind of concerned. My player does not support Dolby Vision, so I am only getting standard-ass static metadata.

I have been thinking, maybe I need a Dolby Vision player? Many movies are mastered to 1000 or 2000 nits, while the TV can reach fewer. Therefore, it needs to tone map the discs's data to fit onto the display.

Maybe I desperately need a Dolby Vision player to get dynamic metadata to smoothen out the tone curves?

What do you think? Is standard HDR10 bad for OLED?
