Is it just me, or are "Afterlife"'s detractors becoming more vocal?

It seemed like a month ago, fans and movie goers alike were raving about "Ghostbusters Afterlife". Aside from the mainstream professional critics (who were divided over this -- mainly due to bitterness over 2016), there was very little to no backlash over this movie. It seemed most people were highly satisfied.

I could be wrong, but it seems as if the pendulum is swinging the other direction now. A lot of YouTubers, bloggers, commentators, etc. are becoming more vocal in their dislike over "Afterlife". And it's almost becoming like a circle-jerk in the comment sections of said content (i.e.: "This movie is a lazy soulless cashgrab." "Giving kids proton packs is stupid." "The plot made no sense." "It's creatively bankrupt." "The Ghostbusters showing up with no explanation was cringe." "If you like this movie, you're a dumb shill." "Not as bad as 2016, but still bad in its own right." "It will be forgotten, just like Jurassic World and Force Awakens." etc, etc, etc).

I don't agree with any of that, obviously. But I fear its going to become more and more the accepted opinion -- while the people who still stand by their praise for it will look (unfairly) stupid in retrospect. All because the hype has died down, and people feel some obligation to be more negative.

Above everything, it frustrates me how easily mislead people on the internet are whenever they're "on the fence" about a movie, and feel the negative opinions are more "accurate" than the positive ones. As if negative opinions are always honest, and positive opinions are always dishonest. I really hate that this is the way the internet looks at movies now.

[Tabletop Games] F.A.T.A.L: The Tale Of The โ€œWorst RPGโ€ Ever Made, And The Creatorโ€™s Internet Battle Against His Detractors

Trigger Warnings: Discussion and references to rape, sexism, racism, and so much more. If you can think of it, chances are this game will include it.

Special thanks to u/pythonesqueviper for permission to redo their old write up on F.A.T.A.L and information on the fallout at the time. Check out their more concise summary here, itโ€™s a nice short read and has extra sources I havenโ€™t used.

EDIT: Some spelling mistakes

Since the release of the Fifth Edition of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) in 2014, Tabletop Roleplaying Games (TTRPGs) have exploded into the mainstream, becoming more popular than ever before thanks to too many factors to name. Youtube channels, dedicated shows like Critical Role, easy internet access to online games, and nostalgia for the 80s have fueled a comeback for D&D and countless other RPGs. But tabletop games have been around for decades now. Since that time, the field has only grown larger as more and more people have access to the tools needed to write and publish their own games.

Of course, that doesnโ€™t mean their game will see significant success, as the author of F.A.T.A.L. can probably attest.

What Are Tabletop Roleplaying Games

Skip if you know about TTRPGs, or have read my write ups on either MYFAROG or Racial Holy War. Yes, there have been a lot of racist role playing games published.

If you havenโ€™t played one, chances are the rules will vary wildly depending on what system you choose. But generally, these games are based on a group of people role playing different scenarios based around the mechanics of whatever system they are playing. Someone usually takes up the role of Dungeon Master (DM) or the game systemโ€™s equivalent. The DM is responsible for setting up obstacles, deciding on unclear rules, facilitating role play, and guiding the party to a specific objective. The rest of the players form a party, working with the DM to overcome the obstacles in the way of whatever goals they are after. The nature of TTRPGs and the amount of different systems on the market means that there is really no limit to what the DM and party can do. As long as both parties agree to what they want out of a game, and put in effort

WON - Paul Levesque is being blamed backstage for not winning the Wednesday night wars which WWE thought they would win easily. His detractors who fear for their position if he takes power are using the opportunity to denigrate NXT with released wrestlers being pawns in the power struggle.

The backstage wrangling is what drove Kross to lose twice on Raw while being heavily protected on NXT and Aliyah to beat Dakota Kai ahead of her Takeover world title match.

NXT is being cast as a product full of independent workers who can't draw which is unable to attract a younger audience.

My counterpoints to the __________ detractors

While I agree Erika deserved her win, I think Xander is a lot BETTER player than people here are giving him credit for. everyone seems to be kinda trashing Xander's game in an effort to validate Erika's and saying he played a terrible social game, etc.

I think Xander did suffer from the big-move-itis and misplayed his jury perception, but at 20, especially watching the heavy jury sway over the last several seasons, can you blame him? It's a totally reasonable idea, especially when you're out there, to believe that your flashy and totally correct read at the beginning of merge will give you a somewhat decent resume, ESPECIALLY compared to the competition out there.

Did Erika play a better strategic and social game after the merge vote? I would argue for sure yes, but I was kinda shocked NOBODY on the jury mentioned her literally getting saved when she would've been the first merge vote almost guaranteed there. This twist is literally unprecedented, so from a contestant point of view, it's totally possible Xander viewed this as a big detractor to Erika's game.

Therefore, it would make sense for Xander to think he should have faded into the background after that, and it's hard to know what would have happened had he stuck with Yase 3, but it's important to note that Xander's goal to reintegrate with the group for the most part worked. So I don't think that's really a fair criticism because it's just hindsight looking back from a Xander loss.

Xander probably still wins if he takes Erika on in firemaking. Is this his fault for not taking that action? Unequivocally yes, but I just think his moves to fade into the background were the correct social read and he did create bonds with some of the correct people such as Ricard. He just needed to be a bit more proactive later in the game. I don't think Xander is all that bad of a player as people on this sub want to make out, and I think he does pretty well should he return with a little more age.

EDIT: didn't even touch on Xander's decisions to play or hold the idol for a ton of earlier tribals, which is a surprisingly difficult task even when you're not the biggest threat in the game

How many of the Fallout 76 detractors have tried the modern version of the game?

This question has no malice or ill will behind in case it gives off that vibe. If you dislike or even hate 76 that is perfectly fine.

However, I am curious. I see so much negativity directed towards the game (granted itโ€™s always the NV circlejerk types of communities who are the most vocal) and most use the launch as the main reason of why the modern game is bad.

The launch was terrible. No amount of rose tinted glasses can deny that. However I am willing to say the game has improved tenfold. Games can improve and I would say 76 certainly has. Is it perfect? Certainly not, the game still has flaws, some more glaring than others.

If you are a detractor that has tried a modern version then be free to share your critiques and why you do not enjoy it. I am interested and I would like to see a different view point.

Vancouverโ€™s AAA cycling network and its detractors.

Boy do I love living in a city with such an amazing downtown separated cycling lane network. God I love it. Also, I drive more than I cycle and, when driving, appreciate not having to worry about cyclists and having fewer people driving. When driving, I donโ€™t notice vehicle traffic being held up appreciably by the bike lanes.

Question is, why the heck are there so many vociferous detractors of the downtown bike lanes online whenever the topic comes up. Theyโ€™re really mad about it too. There are so many people convinced that โ€œno one uses themโ€ or they only get used for a few months out of the year. This isnโ€™t my experience at all. Also, theyโ€™ll claim solidarity with some unassailable demographic (say, disabled 80 year old grannies) who suddenly โ€œcanโ€™t get anywhereโ€ because they made a new lane on smithe

Anyway, Iโ€™m starting to go off a bit. I just donโ€™t get why cycling infrastructure attracts such vocal opposition. I really donโ€™t. They all seem to be mad about stuff thatโ€™s mostly not true.

What up? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

They fixed my biggest issues with MCU Spider-Man except one. (Spoilers + mini review from ex-MCU Spider-Man detractor)

Wow. The 2nd half of this film was fantastic.

The first half was generic MCU banter and the jokes really irritated me as I'm someone who prefers a more mature tone like Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2. I was just riding the flow until it got good...

And good did it get. It was honestly so refreshing to feel actual heavy emotiomal cues from a MCU Spider-Man flick, something I had felt was missing in the last two. Last time I felt it was in Civil War, granted that's a Russo film and they understood the assignment.

They fixed all of my issues with the character. He's finally on his own, something the character is very known for in the comics. He has personal issues other than not being able to date a girl. He is on a personal vendetta, he puts the mask on out of guilt and responsibility, not because it's cool to be a hero. I can't really pinpoint this feeling but I am so excited to see Peter be on his own. It sounds a bit harsh and weird if you're not familiar with the comics and the character at a root level, but this is who Spider-Man is. He's an average lower class New Yorker who never once uses his powers out of malice, but for the greater good and his self conscience. It humanizes his struggle because of the relatability and sympathy you feel for him. He can be rich if he wants to, he can be famous if he wishes, but he chooses not to out of his own selflessness.

I am actually very excited to see the next installment in Peter's journey in the MCU, so much so that this was actually my first time seeing a MCU Spider-Man movie in theater. I had skipped the last two because they didn't jive with how I envisioned the character.

And that suit looks fucking amazing, it looks so good. The final swing was chef's kiss. They really paid homage to Sam Raimi's films with the one-take.

But what bugged me was the blatant ommision of Uncle Ben. I understand they mention him twice but neither is from MCU Spider-Man's own mouth, he doesn't even flinch or react, nor comment. So the issue isn't any rights or anything like that where they cannot legally talk about him, they purposefully removed Ben from Peter's journey, which feels incredibly odd to me. He should be the one universal trait among ALL of Peter Parker stories, even Indian Peter Parker had a Uncle Ben, albeit with a different name.

What boggles me is that they made it very clear in Far From Home that Ben Franklin Parker was a real person in Peter's life through his old suitcase.

How do you miss the opportu

hi there guys!

Iwas wondering what are the detractors of legal weed doing in states where its legal??? they keep crying or just accepted it?,

i ask because a lot of normies are crying here in Chile bc of the ongoing discussion about regulating weed. Recently ppl supported a initiative to discuss about drugs in the constitutional convention, and that generated a huge sandstorm

i feel sad for them, because we all know weed is going to be legal anyway

Crypto detractors like to call blockchain a solution to a problem we donโ€™t have. Here are some other technological innovations from the past that were met with scorn.

A common refrain from crypto skeptics is that the blockchain is a solution for problems we donโ€™t have. Here is a short list of other inventions met with similar skepticism in their time and quotes from their notable detractors.

Alternating current- โ€˜fooling around with alternating current is just a waste of time. Nobody will use it, ever.โ€™ -Edison

Light bulbs- โ€˜unworthy of the attention of practical or scientific men.โ€™ - House of parliament

Telephone- โ€˜obvious limitationsโ€ฆ hardly more than a toy.โ€™ - Western Union

Television- โ€˜people will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.โ€™ -Darryl Zanuck

Automobiles- โ€˜it will never, of course, come into as common use as the bicycle.โ€™ - The Literary Digest

Computers- โ€˜There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home,โ€™ - Ken Olson, 1977

Online shopping- โ€˜Remote shopping, while entirely feasible, will flop โ€“ because women like to get out of the house, like to handle merchandise, like to be able to change their minds.โ€™ -Time magazine

This list is obviously far from comprehensive and you can probably go back thru history and find derision for any new invention because if youโ€™ll indulge me in one last quote:

โ€˜The innovator has for enemies all those who have done well under the old conditions.โ€™ โ€“ Niccolรฒ Machiavelli

Why FnFโ€™s detractors opinion isnโ€™t really qualified to be heard.

Iโ€™m going to explain here. When you think of most of FnFโ€™s detractors, most of them have opinions about the show they can never clarify. All they say is โ€œTheyโ€™re bashing womenโ€. But how is it bashing when most guys donโ€™t want a chick with a past all over the internet doing monkey double backflips(S/O to Coach Greg Adams) all over the BBC?

Many agree that women of most ages want a man higher than herself or atleast perceives him as so. If sheโ€™s with a guy lower than herself itโ€™s for a short time and she hopes he has the potential to become higher value in life.

All of these hating reaction channels make these vague terms which is why theyโ€™re really the bigger problem in the manosphere. You got guys like Aba and the excommunicated felon Ayindei throwing the R-word around so easily and then claim theyโ€™re helping men. Thereโ€™s no clip out there where Myron and Fresh ever said anything that would be termed โ€œmasoganyโ€.

Have you ever watched any of the โ€œPUAโ€™sโ€ videos on FNF? They parrot what Myron has to say, but then claim what Myron says is wrong ๐Ÿ˜‘. Also one of FnFโ€™s biggest haters John Anthony Lifestyle pled guilty to โ€œcoercionโ€ in Las Vegas a few years ago.

Itโ€™s a smear campaign by all of these guys because FnF is so big. A&P threw the Alpha Male title on these guys to force a narrative. Now theyโ€™re trying to force a false narrative over copyrights when A&P and all of these haters know what they did was defamation, slander and all the videos they did using FnF content to defame them was monetized.

When you hear โ€œFnF is copyrighting smaller channelsโ€ you think bullyโ€™s. But really these smaller channels are actually bigger than Aba is letting on. Again they want to paint FnF as the bullyโ€™s when really FnF have helped more people than all 30+ channels combined. Women even watch the podcast and have better relationships with their bf/husbands because of the truth FnF has spoken.

FnF is here to stay, not because I say so. But because โ€œPeople lie, BUT NUMBERS DONT.โ€

I'd just like to say that it's nice to have a President who gives so few fucks about his detractors.

I'm 37, I've seen a few Presidents in my day, I watched both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama walk on eggshells for eight years for fear of offending swing voters (among other things), and because the Democrats are the party of the people, the party that listens to others' concerns, even when those concerns are inane.

Bill was trying to popularize Third Way politics, Barack had to be the Jackie Robinson of Presidents, but Joe seems like he has nothing to prove, and I like that. He's there to be the President, not necessarily the head of the Democratic party, not there to jump every time Fox News sneezes, not there to coddle the both-siders, he ran to be President and that's what he's doing.

I'm tired of watching Presidents fighting to win the news cycle, y'know?

From an electoral point of view I have no idea what Biden's "No Fucks Left Behind" rhetoric will reap. On the one hand it seems counter intuitive that Biden's lack of supplication will help Democrats in the midterms, on the other hand Republicans haven't given fucks for nearly sixty years and they keep winning elections somehow, so maybe it'll work out.

Pulling out of Afghanistan, issuing a vaccine mandate, calling for massive tax increases (on those making more than $400k/yr), these are all double edge policies, and he hasn't hesitated to defend or advocate for them even once.

When Joe said the buck stops with him, he meant it, and I like that, I like having a President who doesn't fold, or run, or play games; it's nice to have, while we have it.

When detractors say โ€œjust kick Chucky!โ€

SPOILERS

I get amused when they say this, because in the movies his victims are always caught by surprise or injured before he finishes them off. Thereโ€™s not one victim throughout the entire franchise who either one of those do not apply to.

The ones who do fight back? They live! Andy, Karen, Mike, Kyle, etc. all survived! How were Maggie, Eddie, John, and Dr. Ardmore supposed to fight back exactly?

In CP2: the technician, Mattson, Miss Kettlewell, Phil, Joanne, Grace, and the other technician all couldnโ€™t fight back. I donโ€™t think Mattson ever saw Chucky.

In CP3: the executive couldnโ€™t fight back. The garbage man never saw Chucky. The colonel had a heart attack. The barber was caught by surprise. Shelton and Whitehurst, well these kills speak for themselves. The guard got shot.

In Bride: the cop was Tiffany and by surprise, Damien was tied up, Kincaid was injured, Norton it was too late, the couple couldnโ€™t do anything, David got hit by the truck, the old couple and gravedigger were shot, and the detective at the end was caught by surprise.

And the same can be said for the rest of the films Iโ€™m sure. So when anyone says โ€œjust kick himโ€, itโ€™s not as simple as that.
