So, I just finished watching the iCarly series, which was more enjoyable than it had a right to be considering that I have watched maybe half an episode of iCarly prior to this (sheltered childhood). The thought, care, and effort put into the series truly made it an entertaining, comfortable, and enjoyable watch.
While it was an offhanded comment in the review, the situation with Colonel Shay is definitely not a standard case of being separated from one's family due to a military job. While military families do frequently juggle a service member leaving, not seeing them for 3 years at a time is really not a thing. In addition to the 30 days leave every year, most deployments (including, most relevant, submarine deployments) have set time periods and extended time at home after the deployment. While submarine deployments are known to be particularly hard on families, they still see their families more than once every three years.
Additionally and most glaringly, according to the wiki ( Colonel Steven Shay | iCarly Wiki | Fandom ), Colonel Shay has been deployed to Europe for the whole show. This brings up a couple of issues:
- I cannot find any active submarine bases in Europe and there definitely aren't any in Italy. This makes sense as US submarine technology is very closely guarded and Italy isn't currently one of our closest intelligence partners. Additionally, submarines can be under water for 6 months at a time, so they can operate out of a fairly small number of bases worldwide. As such, Colonel Shay is not a submarine officer (being leased from the Air Force for some reason) operating out of Europe.
- As a corollary, I will note that there are submarine bases operating out of Washington state, so it would actually make a lot of sense for him to be stationed there. He wouldn't see his children often, but it would be significantly more than one day every three years.
- Carly was clearly surprised that she could stay with him on base in the last episode. This implies that he didn't previously tell her she could stay with him in Europe. Since he was already deployed to Europe, he would then have kept this information from her for at least three years.
- Europe has internet. It makes little sense that there would be such bad internet from a military base in Europe so as to not be able to get a web show or video call (even if the call was very grainy). It seems on the show, they are impl
