Board Member of the Grant Imahara foundation, Fon Davis was a model-maker for Star Wars, Interstellar, Mars Attacks, Guardians of the Galaxy, and close friend of Grant opens up about making practical models for cinema in the CGI world of today, ILM's relationship to the show, and the loss of Grant.

https://youtu.be/-IcAbtuYEok

Model Maker Fon Davis and I both started at Lucasfilm's Industrial Light + Magic in 1996. From the largest spaceships to smallest kit-bashed models, the ILM Model Shop was my favorite department at the company, (OBVIOUSLY!!) Fon walks us through his career making models, robots, and creatures ... and sometimes he gets to blow them up!

Having worked at the most premier VFX shops, including ILM, New Deal Studios, Disney, and now his own Fonco Studios, we discuss the INCREASING relevance of practical models in 2021's CGI universe. We also discuss losing his close friend, Grant Imahara and we even get a little visit from R2D2. Virtual production, robots, AI, and how to get along with our robot overlords in the future are all subjects we explore in this conversation.

I have not posted a lot on Reddit I really wanted the community to enjoy this one.

Given both the success of Parasite and Bong Joon-ho's recent comments on watching subtitled foreign films, do you think more people will be persuaded to take more of an interest in foreign cinema?

And a follow-up question: is anybody here genuinely hesitant to watch foreign-language films because of subtitles? If so, why?

I've often seen people mention that they only watch movies that are in their native language, and even observed people outright complaining about having to read subtitles. And not only online, but with quite a few of my friends and colleagues as well.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I personally find much more interest in foreign-language films than I do English films. It's always been very important to me personally to observe and be open to all kinds of art, whether it be film, music, or what have you, from all different kinds of cultures and regions. Even outside of the entertainment aspect, viewing many different cultural styles is incredibly beneficial in general, and helps me grow as an artist myself. When you limit yourself only to films in your native language, you're missing out on other fantastic films that are equally as great as Parasite.

And don't get me wrong, I loved Parasite. It was my favorite film of 2019, and I'm super glad that it's getting the acknowledgement that it deserves. But outside of Parasite, I generally don't see too many foreign movie discussions on this sub, so I'm curious to hear any and all of your personal opinions on the subject in general. Are you often relatively open to watching foreign films? Or do subtitles and/or other aspects of foreign cinema genuinely bother you? And for those of you that watched Parasite; did it make watching foreign movies appeal more to you?

7 GPU RTX 2080 hybrid liquid-cooled Cinema/Octane Render Supercomputer Rig - AKA thanks PLX chips! One of very few in the world.

QUICK FULL ALBUM.

Basic SPECS & PARTS:

  1. 7X EVGA RTX 2080 hybrids, for a total of around 24,000 CUDA cores.

  2. XEON W 2125+ (any W series will work on this board)

  3. Gigabyte MW51-HP0 dual gigabit [not 10gig] networking, 7x16 pcie slots!

  4. 128GB Samsung ECC server RAM

  5. Corsair H100 AIO cooler (large air coolers would not fit under the thick risers!)

  6. 7X Thermaltake risers

  7. 2X EVGA 1600W PSUs

  8. Custom aluminum frame (adapted from mining & modified to support the huge heavy radiators)

  9. 3D printed PSU adapter bracket and PSU adapter to join the two PSUs. Master PSU activates the slave when turned on.

  10. Some miscellaneous bolts and nuts and miscellania.

While I won’t outright claim this is a world first, the complexity of getting the cards to work properly in render and extreme performance tests was ALMOST IMPOSSIBLY DIFFICULT. So I will claim that anyone who has done this before is probably using different components and is much better at tweaking drivers and OS’s and might be using some custom server build or might have direct help from Nvidia. This is, however, likely the world’s first 2000 series hybrid liquid cooled 7 GPU single regular server motherboard render rig using this exact config. The liquid cooling was done to run the rig in near silence in an office environment. From a few feet away it’s only about as loud as a standard desktop at full power.

Shout out to Gigabyte tech support, my tech consultant friends, and others who made this possible with their knowledge and creativity.

Also, if anyone has some scenes we can use to bench-test rigs like this in the future in Octane/similar software, let me know...

Super fun project to build. Super not fun project to test & get stable.

For anyone googling this at some point in the future. 7 GPUs at X16x8-etc spread on a GIGABYTE MW51-HP0 must have V09 or V011+ BIOS and must have an nvidia drive support mod done to disable older PCIE compatibility. Otherwise system will crash during renders and heavy tasks...

  1. Make sure all the risers are tight and cable connections are good.
  2. Download appropriate drivers and follow this guide: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4778

There is nowhere else online providing this support or answers involving systems like this since they are so rare.

For future rigs:

-Possibly add a heatsink to the NVME SSD

-Get the software and burn-in done BEFORE spendi

Kabir Singh: It's Not A Love Story or A Cinema; It's A Barbaric Decimation of Femininity (1/5)

This could have been an epic love story, the movie which everyone who has ever fallen in love, or God forbid, plans to fall in love, should watch. The modern-day Devdas, or the new revamped DDLJ, which forces you to use that tissue paper in the darkness of the theater.

But alas. All this movie ends up is insulting, objectifying women like no other movie has done in recent times.

Imagine a girl, a fresher just entering the college she has slogged off for, and the senior coming to the class and declaring that she is 'his girl', and no one should look at her. Picking her up from the class to teach her anatomy in the woods, and slapping her when she asks him to respect her dad.

The character, Kabir Singh is a sadist, horny sexist, who treats her girl like an object, a property who can be twisted and tweaked the way men want.

The concept of consent and romance has been killed to show how masculine the character is and being a chauvinist and a misogynist is glorified.

And the biggest problem was the hooting and shouting and whistling on some of the cringe-worthy scenes (the hero trying to rape pointing a knife to a girl, who is not even his girlfriend), in an otherwise decent crowd of movie-lovers in Pune.

I can't even imagine the effect this movie will have in states like UP and Bihar.

Cinema does have a responsibility and screwed up movies like these can play havoc with the minds of young male teens, who are about to encounter the beautiful concept of love.

It's not a love story, neither a cinema. Its a barbaric decimation of femininity.

[TOMT] [MOVIE] British independent psychological thriller about a woman entering a new relationship. The boyfriend is weird and intimidating and her mother is nervous of him. Trailers were shown in Picture House Cinema before the pandemic.

The film may have had it's release pushed back. It's not a lot to go on but I remember a trailer for a British psychological thriller about a couple Livin in an isolated town. The mother of the woman doesn't trust the boyfriend because he's intimidating and weird. I must have seen the trailer around the later half of 2019 and the early half of 2020 and only ever saw it at a Picture House cinema so it must be a British Independent film.

In Spain the youth use loads of words from English instead of their Spanish equivalent, increasingly so. Is this the same in other languages?

In Spain, young people are starting to use and steal words from English, but after speaking with people from Latin America (except Mexico), they tell me they don't really do this and their words are more traditional (even if they are different from the word that's used in mainland Spain). I'm talking about words which there is a Spanish word for but have now been replaced, rather than inventions or objects that use the same word in every language.

For example, in Spain it's now common to hear 'el deadline' instead of plazo de entrega o fecha límite (or so I'm told).

I was wondering if this is common among other languages or whether this is more unique to Spain?

EM of an autistic kid goes berserk in a cinema screening of Jojo Rabbit

Hey guys, I’ve been on this subreddit for a while but never really expected to have a story of my own to tell, until this nonsense happened about almost a week ago. Sorry if it’s subpar but it’s my first ever post here so bear with me.

Okay, so:

Setting - Movie cinema

Time - Last Saturday at about 5pm

Cast:

EM - well, you know

AK - a poor, helpless autistic kid

TU: ticket usher, guy who tears movie tickets before you go in

HU: cinema hall usher

Me: a 16 year old guy

F: my friend who is also 16

RM: a random man who later tried to keep AK and EM quiet in the cinema hall

So last Saturday, I decided to go out for a pre-dinner movie with my friend. We chose Jojo Rabbit, and after buying tickets we went and joined the queue to get into the area outside the cinema halls. We were next in the queue to get our tickets scanned when up pops EM and her (unfortunately) mentally challenged kid.

EM: Hi, sorry, let me get in first okay?

Me: I’m sorry ma’am, but we queued for our spot, and you should probably do the same.

EM (looking slightly miffed): Just let me go in first, can’t you see I have an autistic boy to take care of?

(Now I really don’t understand the logic of bringing an autistic kid to a movie, but maybe she just wanted to watch the film but was afraid to leave him at home.)

TU: Sorry ma’am, but the boy is right, you have to queue up.

EM (getting increasingly pissed): Is this how you treat the marginalised in society? Do you want to take care of my kid for me?

Me (wishing to avoid a full-blown argument): Fine, take my spot.

EM presents her tickets to the TU, who shrugs and lets her and her kid in.

Unluckily enough, EM and AK were watching Jojo Rabbit too. Me and F settled into our seats as the last ads were playing on screen.

F: I hope he (AK) doesn’t start talking later (during the film).

Me: Same, if not we’ll probably be seeing more bullshit from that poor kid’s mum.

Of course, about an hour into the movie, AK started mumbling something incoherently to himself. It took another 5 minutes of this before someone (RM) sitting closer to the two asked EM to tell AK to pipe down. Me and F weren’t involved here, but we heard the entire conversation (or comedy if you like) quite clearly thanks to EM’s unrelenting vocals.

EM: You’re telling my kid to shut up? How dare you treat someone with a mental illness like this!

RM: I didn’t mean to be offensive in any way, but I think that if you can’t keep your kid under control, you
