A list of puns related to "Chartism"
In OTL, Chartism was the largest popular republican/democratic in Britain since Cromwell's commonwealth. They advocated for drastic political reforms, including universal suffrage, the end to rotten boroughs, secret ballots, the end to the rule that only landowners could be MP's, living wages for MP's, equal constituencies, and annual parliamentary elections. The movement peaked in 1842, when thousands marched on London to deliver a petition to parliament of over 3 million signatures to institute the people's charter into law. This was rejected by the political establishment, and the movement was all but dead by 1850.
But what if, during the 1842 deliverance to parliament - or at another time during the 1840's - these protests turned violent, and a republican revolution occurred, overthrowing parliament and the monarchy. What effect would this have on the industrial revolution, the British empire (which was the global hegemon at the time), Europe, and the wider world?
I have a test on this on Friday. I have some points already but if anyone can share any information that would be appreciated
Thanks :)
TedEd, an educational YouTube channel, created a video on the Library of Alexandria here that surprisingly, doesn't credit the destruction of the library to the "Christian Dark Ages" or to "setting back mankind 1000 years" as other videos do, but they do make some egregious errors.
2:58 > "Heron of Alexandria, created the world's first steam engine over a thousand years before it was finally reinvented during the Industrial Revolution.
This is a bit of a nitpick, but it's unclear if Heron actually created the device in question, rather he did describe it. [1] But so did the Roman engineer Marcus Virtuvius Pollio almost a century before Heron. [2]
3:53: > "Each new set of rulers viewed its contents as a threat rather than a source of pride"
At the time where the Emperor Theodosius I outlawed paganism in the Roman Empire, much of the main library had already been destroyed due to fire or earthquakes. The Serapeum, where the daughter library was housed, was destroyed under Theodosius, but no mention of a library inside the Serapeum was made by contemporary sources. [3]
The Caliph Omar was said to have ordered the library's destruction by some (relatively recent) Arab sources, but no contemporary records support this claim. [4]
3:50 >"In 415 CE, Christian Rulers even had a mathematician named Hypatia murdered for studying the library's ancient Greek Texts, which they viewed as blasphemous."
What...? First of all, Hypatia was murdered by a Christian mob not because she was reading ancient Greek texts. Hypatia's school of Neoplatonism was actually in agreement with mainstream Christian theology at the time [5]. Hypatia's death was the result of Political intrigue after she failed to reconcile the Roman Prefect Orestes with the Bishop of Alexandria [6].
I usually love TedEd, but these were some really glaring faults that ground my gears.

Hello all. Having done a certain amount of reading on material related to the Chartist movement in Britain which took place from 1838 to 1857 and demanded several electoral reforms including universal male suffrage, I noticed that the information on the reaction - be it by social, religious, economic or political forces - against Chartism did not go into enough detail for me to form a clear picture. My question is, did this reaction exist? What was it motivated by? How organised was it?
Any other areas of detail on opposition to the movement that are of interest would be appreciated.
I've heard about a movement called chartism in 19th century Britain. Can someone explain what is was and what it's purpose was? How did it influence the emancipation of the common man and other emancipatory movements?
Is there any evidence suggesting that by looking at patters such as like doji, inverted hammer, hammer ect.. are applicable on making positions? Or this is nothing but a huge hoax.
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB
Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"
I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual
So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

Ants donβt even have the concept fathers, let alone a good dad joke. Keep r/ants out of my r/dadjokes.
But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.

I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
Now that I listen to albums, I hardly ever leave the house.
Don't you know a good pun is its own reword?
Two muffins are in an oven, one muffin looks at the other and says "is it just me, or is it hot in here?"
Then the other muffin says "AHH, TALKING MUFFIN!!!"
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

Edit 2: I have already been made aware that Men In Black 3 has told a version of this joke before. If the joke is not new to you, please enjoy any of the single origin puns in the comments
