The importance of neuro-diversity within the cerebral cortex

I am currently a student studying neurobiology and I can’t seem to wrap my head around why so many neuronal subtypes are needed within the cerebral cortex. I have read that this increases the computational power of the cerebral cortex but this only explains the diversity in the morphology but not molecular diversity. What be if it does it serve towards the cerebral cortex bro have many subtypes of GABAergic internerons? Have we been able to find an explanation to why so many neuronal subtypes are required?

Visualising cerebral cortex

I realise this may be a dumb question but I’m struggling to visualise what the cerebral cortex looks like at a cellular level. If grey matter contains only cell bodies and dendrites and white matter myelinated axons, how can synapses be formed? I am just picturing a bunch of cell bodies in the grey matter with axons projecting downwards into the white matter but I can’t imagine how connections can be formed this way. Again, apologises if this sounds stupid! I hope this makes sense. Any diagrams would be super useful too.
