As title said, I'm looking to connect with owners who has had experience with pups with DLE.
I found that there is very little information out there and what's out there is a repeated information. Looking for personal experiences and information and how DLE effects/effected their pups.
My recently adopted 7 y/o border collie mix has DLE, it seems to be under control but I worry about exposing him to the sun too much, and am not sure how to figure out how much time outdoors is too much.
For those of you who have dogs with DLE, I have some questions to get the discussion going:
How did you find out your dog had it? How have you treated it? What symptoms does your dog show? What have you found is the best way to manage it? Has it impacted their quality of life and/or behavior significantly? When you let them go outside, what parameters do you use to know when to let them and for how long? Do you only take them in walks at night?
My recently adopted corgi Goose has this condition, it mainly affects his snout and feet. The sores/patches on his feet have flared down since I brought him home but I dont have an appointment with my vet until June 5th. One of the requirements of this condition is limited UV exposure, there are places in my yard that have shade with the sun but I can tell he yearns to walk around more during the day and during potty breaks and I feel awful having to restrict him (our walks have been in the late evening and early morning, and for the past few days its been rainy and he's absolutely loved more outside time) I was thinking of getting some doggie sunscreen , and summer appropriate booties to give him some more protection. Would this aggravate the skin? Does anyone have a pup that suffers from DLE that has any advice or recommendations? Waiting to see my vet before we increase any omegas or vitamins, Thank you so much! I just want to make sure im providing him with the most comfortable life I can!

Hi Dr.Powers. I have a ftm friend with systemic lupus. His meds are "Methotrexate", "Hydroxychloroquine" and "Prednisolone". Can he start hrt (testosterone)?
Thanks for the support thus far, everyone. I’m a bit flustered here:
My sister has a diagnosis of lupus, which she received after her most recent birthing, of a set of twins six years ago. And over the past two weeks, my regular cyclic symptoms have matched up with what she says she experienced before her diagnosis. Obviously, as a trans woman, I don’t menstruate and I can’t give birth, but my hormone levels could potentially be imbalanced, especially seeing as they weren’t tested when I started HRT two and a half months ago, and had never been tested at any point before that, either.
Could anyone here offer any support or advice for this type of occurrence? Not only is it physically-consuming, it’s also emotionally draining.

Thank you for reading this. Recently we've learned about systemic lupus erythematous. However, the teaching left a lot of knowledge gaps. I've looked at the literature to see if I can find a clear answer on the following questions, but I could not find much. Thus, any input on these is appreciated:
- What's the pathway/ mechanism that leads to the production of the variety of antinuclear antibodies?
- I can only make sense of this this way: extensive necrosis (for some reason) -> exposure of dendritic cells (and macrophages and other antigen presenting cells) to the intracellular contents, which include intranuclear contents -> treatment of these materials as foreign -> eventual antibody production.
- If this indeed is a major mechanism, where would that major necrosis event come from?
- We learned that SLE pathology progresses through immune-complex formations. If nuclear content is intracellular most often, then what do these anti-nuclear antibodies complex with? Is it an issue of cross-reactivity?
- I can only make sense of this this way: extensive necrosis (for some reason) -> exposure of dendritic cells (and macrophages and other antigen presenting cells) to the intracellular contents, which include intranuclear contents -> treatment of these materials as foreign -> eventual antibody production.
- Do we know the logic/ mechanism behind why anti-dsDNA antibodies are so specific to LSE? Are there established hypotheses behind the mechanism at least?
- This might be too specific, but is there a logic/ theory behind why in drug-induced lupus anti-histone antibodies are highly specific?
- Drug-induced lupus commonly presents with arthralgia and interestingly spares the skin, kidneys, and the CNS. A type of amyloidosis, beta 2 microglobulin amyloidosis (or dialysis amyloidosis) also predominantly affects the joints. Would this imply that there are certain similarities between the immune complexes formed in drug-induced lupus and beta 2 microglobulin amyloidosis?
- anti-lymphocyte anti-bodies: lupus may present with anti-lymphocyte anti-bodies. Would this imply that the presentation of lupus in this case may be self-limiting (lymphocytes targeting themselves)?
- Reynaud phenomenon and SLE: is this mechanistic logic correct:
- Normal response to cold is vasoconstriction. Generally, if the cutaneous vessels are already narrowed due to vasculitis, the same vasoconstrictive response is going to lead to a greater extent of vessel narrowing -> Reynaud phenomenon.
- Libman-Sacks endocarditis (of the mitral valve) and SLE: is this logic correct:
- we have turbulent flow at the level of the mitral valve (blood being pushed against the closed valve during systole) -> contact of immune complexes with the mitral valve -
