A brief analysis of an ancient Assyrian bas relief (carved image)
So here's the image
What do we see?
-
Mirror image symmetry for one.
-
A central structure that is itself symmetrical from left to right.
-
Above it, a winged disk symbol that was very common in both Mesopotamia and Egypt
-
To either side (nearest) a male figure. The figure on the left is a bit different than the one on the right. Each one carries a symbol of authority (scepter) but the one on the right has its left arm in a sling.
-
To either side on the outside of each male figure: Another pair of figures. They are male and they each have wings (angelic?) Each one is holding a "pine cone object" near the back of a King figure's head. Each one is also carrying the iconic/mysterious handbag (also a common ancient symbol)
So what does this represent?
Well there's no such thing as a guy with wings. So it seems reasonable to think that the image is trying to convey one or more ideas.
Here's one possibility.
They were trying to visualize the structure and function of a human mind. If that seems unlikely, consider the following:
-
Winged disk as a symbol of consciousness.
-
Central structure as a rough analogue of the central nervous system - brain at the top, spinal cord below, surrounded by network of sensory and motor nerves.
-
The male figure on each side = right and left hemispheres.
-
As per ancient "receiver of consciousness" model, the "angels" act as messengers and receivers of ideas, impulses or inspirations.
-
Pine cone object symbolizes the pineal gland, which the ancients believed was the seat of the soul. "Angels" holding the pine cones near the head represents the idea of the brain as a receiver of consciousness. We have a similar expression today when we say "someone put an idea in my head" or "where did you get that idea?"
This analysis is in close alignment with Bicameral Mind Theory
