A list of puns related to "Afar Triple Junction"
I was just reviewing a new lecture I found on the Mid-continent Rift in the midwest, USA before adding to the Earth Science Online Video Database, and the speaker was telling the story I have heard dozens of times, that the Mid-continent/Keeweenaw Rift represents a failed attempt at incipient seafloor-spreading from a mantle plume/hot-spot, and that its shape represents a kind of triple-junction geometry (although the 3rd 'northern' arm is kind of pathetic if this is the case).
As he was presenting this very common story about the rift, I started to wonder, if the Mid-continent Rift is supposed to represent this perfect 'triple-junction' geometry where a mantle plume head impacted the lithosphere from below, causing the plate to break apart, why are several important features associated with this process missing?
- Why did rifting fail? and why don't we find continued evidence of the plume, leaving an age-progression hotspot track in its wake, as we see with the Yellowstone hotspot track, or the Tristan da Cunha hotspot track, which starts with the Parana-Etendeka flood basalts (plume head) and continues with the neatly mirrored Walvis Ridge and Rio Grande Rise in its wake (plume tail)? There is no ancient hotspot track starting from the supposed center of the MCR/KR at Lake Superior moving off in some age-younging progression in a direction related to plate motion.
- Why is the northern '3rd' arm of the supposed triple junction geometry so pathetic compared to the rest of the MCR/KR?
- Is there any evidence of Plume head uplift/regional erosion surface associated with the "center" of the supposed MCR/KR plume head? (one would expect to observe this in a roughly 500km circle around the center of the rift)
So...what happened to the plume/hot-spot in this model?
Edited to add: WOW, thank you guys for all your input, specifically formed fundies. Your voices especially inspired me to contact my little second cousin. Iβve reached out to her with a short but supportive message, and an open door. If anything happens maybe Iβll make a new post to update! Thanks again. β€οΈ
Original post: You guys are the only ones I thought would be as happy as I was to learn this news! My momβs cousin is a tradcath - like, extremely - and is kind of a nut ball. In addition to her antivax, anti-pope, anti choice, pro Latin mass views, her husband divorced her over 10 years ago and remarried but she says theyβre still married in the eyes of the lord, and heβll come back to her one day. She also calls his current wife his concubine.
For years my mom and I have been following this woman from afar. Weβve always worried for her three daughters, and hoped they would grow up and be able to experience some freedom. WELL, last night I found out the oldest is almost 18, got her own social media, moved out of her momβs house, and has her pronouns in her bio and a BLM banner on her wall, and is pro choice. I am so damn proud.
Iβve literally never met her, they all live across the country from me, so I think it would be weird if I reached out, but Iβm amazed at the work this kid has clearly put in to re-educating herself, and I love to see it.
To all you fundie kids who have made it out, I see you and Iβm celebrating you!
I love this game and I really enjoy having the new factions to play as. The traps are particularly interesting. I haven't had a chance to play as Albion yet but I look forward to that next!

Is it just a game of chance, where there's enough antibodies produced that they are bound to "bump" into a virus?
Itβs raining Datsun cogs.
Thought of this after Bezos implied that we would all eventually live in space and only visit Earth recreationally.
I'm still flabbergasted.
