Statement by photographer on scene at stampede Yau Ma Tei Stationβ€”Kaiser USP United Social Press

11.18 Yau Ma Tei people stepping on people]

At about 11:30 last night, a group of demonstrators were chased by the police to the outside of the Yau Ma Tei MTR station. Some of them stumbled on the ground, causing people to step on people and people. People on the scene were crushed or stepped under the crowd. . At that time, firefighters and volunteers were helping to save people. Some firefighters tried to pull up some people, but when the police arrived, they stopped all rescue operations and separated firefighters and first-aiders from demonstrators. And prevent reporters from going forward. Police officers finally arrested the people who rescued and provided assistance, but did not lend a helping hand to the depressed demonstrators. When the reporter of the film was shooting at the scene, the police officers attacked by pepper spray, which hindered and prevented reporters from taking interviews.

Jiang Yongxiang, Senior Superintendent of the Police Public Relations Branch, said at a press conference this afternoon that he had not received any reports of "people stepping on people" in the dispersal operation in Yau Ma Tei yesterday. The police's arguments are obviously not the same as the facts. In fact, the situation last night was "people stepping on people" plus "people folding people", and eventually 31 people were sent to hospital for treatment. 16 of them were classified as serious cases. In the end, the frontline police officers concealed the facts and did not report the actual situation, or the police deliberately reported false information to the public, to dilute the incident to escape the responsibility of seeing death, which is a shameful behavior that the public cannot accept.

🚨︎ report
Around 11.30pm last night (August 31), large groups of riot police entered the Yau Ma Tei MTR station and subdued numbers of citizens. According to first aiders there were at least 4 injured by the platform

; 1 first aider arrested in the middle of providing care. When reporters and other first aiders arrived at the station later, the police failed to acknowledge the number of people injured and have refused entry.

An officer agitatedly warned reporters and first aiders to leave the scene, and blocked the reporter’s camera. As the reporter tried to leave, an officer grabbed their camera and would not let go. He has also threatened to arrest the reporter. MTR staff eventually let the reporters and first aiders into the station and closed the entrance immediately after.

Some first aiders were crying emotionally and condemned the police for being inhumane since they would not even let them provide care to the injured.

The first aiders outside the station refused to leave because 3 of their colleagues inside the station were seen being forced to face the wall. They have also explained the situation to citizens outside. Later on, a riot police approached them and explained the injured citizens were already being sent to Kwong Wah Hospital, and told them not to worry since there were a lot of reporters inside the station.
