A list of puns related to "Wireless Internet service provider"
So Iβm moving south of the interstate from in town and cannot take suddenlink with me unless I fork over some serious dough to have new communications lines run.
Whatβs the best wisp for rural areas around Midland?
I am a student at IU who has been working extensively within the investing and management side of the telecommunications world (think cell towers, fiber, data centers). Within this world, WISPs have proven to be an effective solution for delivering affordable broadband internet in low population density regions. Given the prohibitive cost of fiber in rural America and the slightly cheaper coaxial cable options, a wireless signal broadcasted from a cellphone tower is often the most economical internet option for rural internet users. WISPs typically offer a 2-20mbps asynchronous internet connection that is often cheaper than cable and faster than DSL. My experience of the internet options in Bloomington and in the surrounding towns has been fairly poor so I think the opportunity for a WISP in this part of Indiana could make a lot of sense. While I am excited about the prospect of a WISP in the Bloomington area, I lack some of the mechanical and network engineering skills for such an operation and consequently am looking for someone to work with.
I would love to hear about everyone's thoughts on the subject. Would such a service fulfill a need in the area specifically outside of Bloomington? Would you or someone you know be interested in helping with such an endeavor?

Warning: Unsatisfying update
Internet provider customer service rep wanted to be on the phone call with me while my sister was having a medical crisis and be involved in the conversation.
We use a common internet provider, big American company name. We have internet with them and my mom called them to upgrade to include cable TV into the plan. She came to a plan agreement with them and the rep proceeded to pitch the new mobile phone plan that the company is rolling out. After the generic sales pitch my mom told her that she wasn't interested in switching cell phone providers, the rep wasn't relenting. Finally after 40m she talked my mom into a "well maybe we'll think about switching, but let me get my daughter to discuss the plan because she's on the plan too and is the one who pays the bill".
[NOTE: This was all on speaker phone so both my mom and me could hear her and she could hear us both. Also my mom is over 70 and knows almost nothing of cell phones, especially smart phones.]
This is where I came into the conversation. The rep pitched the sales deal to me and rambled off a bunch of junk tier phones at ridiculous prices. I was upfront with her about how those deals were awful and we weren't interested in the slightest. She kept pitching more and more info at me, I kept telling her that I'm not interested and to just process the cable TV part of the deal. She outright refused to process the order for cable upgrades without us agreeing to a phone plan. I told her that if phones were forced as part of the cable package that we were also no longer interested in adding cable and to cancel the whole plan.
She then hit me with this number. "The deal was going perfectly until you showed up. I don't want to do business with you, put your mom back on the phone." I called her on her underhanded and patronizing sales tactic and told her that it wasn't going to work on me, I knew the deal was terrible and not worth it. She began clapping back with rude comments like "I don't understand why you're so against a good deal, you don't know good deals" and "please leave so I can talk to your mom alone, she was sensible".
I told her I wanted her name so I could report her. She ignored my request and kept on doing her s
... keep reading on reddit β‘A friend is moving here with a T-Mobile plan. I only know a couple of people that have it, and they're not too happy. Any suggestions for wireless provider? What about internet provider? Mahalo!
My brother and I live in a rural area where a local WISP is our only real option for an internet connection. The ISP is actually very good with a strong connection and decent speeds, at least as far as wireless goes. We both like to play Destiny on our Xbox Ones quite often, and everything runs just fine with both of us playing online. That is until we try to join the same party. We aren't able to join the same party while on the same internet connection. A little research has informed that it's most likely our NAT settings, which show up as moderate. In order to get an open NAT, we would need to do a little port forwarding. This is something I'm relatively familiar with, but because my ISP is wireless, they told me it is not an option for residential clients. I was given the option to be set up with static IPs for my devices, but I don't think this will fix the issue. So I'm here to ask what other options I may have for port forwarding with my current ISP.
My setup is as such (as best as I can explain it):
WISP installed a Ubiquiti point-to-point dish on my roof that receives from a nearby tower. I'm unsure of the model. Downstream of the Ubiquiti device is my Apple Airport Extreme set up in bridge mode because the Ubiquiti device takes care of DHCP, DNS, and all routing of the sort. Downstream of my Airpot Extreme are my devices, wired and wireless.
I have no access to the Ubiquiti equipment (understandably so), and I don't have a complete understanding as to how my internet connection is configured differently than that of say DSL with a modem installed in my home, other than DSL being wired of course. This is probably why port forwarding won't work for my situation. Are there any other options I can suggest to my ISP as to resolve my woeful and lonesome Destiny situation? Thank you for your advice in advanced!
TLDR; Can't play Xbox One games in same party with brother on same internet connection due to NAT settings. WISP doesn't offer port forwarding for residential clients. What other options do I have?
These ISP's use towers and not satellites. Ping is better for gaming and what not, so I was wondering if anyone knew of any who operated near the far west side of SA.
Got an email today from Virgin saying they are putting my bill up and said I can leave them with no termination fees. I get over 100mb down from Virgin and canβt find another provider who can give me even close to that in my area. It looks like Iβm stuck with them tbh as we do a lot of gaming in my house, sometimes 3 Xboxes on at once. Is VM the only real option for anything over 100mb?
From what Iβve heard/read Virgin Media is Bristolβs number one choice.
With all the political turmoil going on (Egypt, OWS) and questions of ISPs filtering content, would it be possible to create a large wi-fi mesh (ignoring problems of latency), to create a completely free internet? Or at least as a secondary, backup network that could not be shut down at key locations? It seems that the mesh projects that are going on are limited to small areas, or have not tackled the scalability issue.
I've moved into a new place on the south side, and since the place is fairly new, the building isn't even connected to the street level for phone lines, so no ADSL, no NBN and definitely no Cable. We can sit tight and hope that Telstra will install cabling, or we can opt for something like Vivid Wireless. My understanding is that they run off 4G (and telstra and optus have similar plans that are ridiculously high priced), but I haven't used anything even close to this before, always having been living somewhere with a very easily set up ADSL connection.
Has anyone used Vivid Wireless and has any problems? Or is there alternative, better companies?

Like title says, we are looking to hire a tech. Carpentry and building would be the primary traits, I can teach the computer side to the right person. I need someone who has common sense and be willing to work. Wage is DOE. Benefits are considerably above the norm. We are a growing company that will be growing significantly very soon with the deployment of new technologies. PM me here and we can discuss further over email.
Dear Spectrum Internet and fios,
Rot in hell.
There are so many things wrong with 2 companies controlling the majority of the internet traffic of the United States but Iβm not here to talk about that.
What I am here to talk about is the bullshit throttling of download speeds just to get us to pay more.
We already pay you $40 a month just to get β100 mb/sβ internet, that is the highest internet level you offer, there is no reason to throttle us to pay you more, but here we are.
So itβs after Christmas, I got a bunch of money and I buy a couple of games on steam, sounds simple enough right?
No.
It took almost a full fucking day to download Half Life Alyx because my download speeds couldnβt break 10 mb/s. I still havenβt downloaded all of my games for that same reason.
After sitting there in my anger at my internets failure to do anything, I go onto google.com to see if there is better internet services.
I happen to stumble upon an article saying that the International space station got an upgrade to its internet and can send and receive data at over 600 mb/s.
Are you kidding me.
Are You FUCKING kidding me.
I have to suffer through single digit download speeds, sometimes dropping to kilobytes per second while fucking astronauts can send and receive data at almost a full gigabyte per second.
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK
I was hopeful someone could point me to a inexpensive WISP. Comcast is putting data caps and so is AT&T. Where I live I can only get AT&T DSL, no Uverse. Comcast wants a 2 year commitment and only guarantee you a price for a year. I read years ago WiMax was coming here but I can't find anything. I also read Airmax used Ubiquity antennas to connect you (which I am very familiar with) but after two weeks of phone calls and filling out their online form, I can't get a call back.
