Automate upgrade Veeam Backup & Replication to v11?

I have several hundred Veeam Backup & Replication installs that are ranging from v9.5u4 to v10. I'm trying to figure out a way to automate the upgrade process to v11. Does anyone know of a "simple" way that I'm obviously missing?

I've tried the unofficial powershell upgrade script but it only works a slim percentage of the time. Often times it will error out on a prerequisite not being installed. Doesn't seem to be the same software missing each time either so it can be a pain to troubleshoot.

I know you can mass upgrade Veeam agents via the Veeam Service Provider Console. Does anyone know a way to mass upgrade Backup & Replication installs?

Side note - In the past I've written an VBR v11 fresh install script so I'm aware of all the prerequisites needed. I'm just trying to avoid writing my own solution.

Veeam Backup & Replication

I am looking into Veeam for backup and replication. I have read that you cannot replicate which a backup is happening. Is that correct? If so, how do people deal with that?

We have servers with huge churn and Full backups take up to 2 days. Would the VM simply not replicate for 2 days? How is this a good solution?

Would it be wise to keep Zerto for DR and just use Veeam for backups?

I've got backup and replication for vmware. I've got 2 esxi hosts. Both hosts have two physical processors. My veeam license is for 4 sockets. I replaced one of the hosts with another host that has two physical processors. Its 32 core per processor, but still only two sockets. Now, veeam backup and replication refuses to backup any vm that is running on the new host. the error: "Unable to process the VM. Your socket license has been exceeded. Install an extended license..." I've rescanned my vcenter from veeam and rebooted the veeam server. Still, no joy. I've opened a ticket with veeam, but thought I'd see if anyone here has had a similar experience.

Veeam Backup & Replication 10a is the newer build of version 10 that addresses issues reported by customers on the original build, and adds the following new features and enhancements:

Fully integrated AWS-native backup
AWS data protection is now built directly in to the Veeam Backup & Replication console. This requires installing AWS Plug-in for Veeam Backup & Replication (separate download). For more information, please refer to KB3239

Platform support

  • Microsoft Windows 10 version 2004 and Microsoft Windows Server SAC version 2004 support as guest OS, as Hyper-V servers, for the installation of Veeam Backup & Replication components, and for agent-based backup with the Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows 4.0.1 (included in the update).

Veeam Backup & Replication 10 Cumulative Patch 2

The new fix has been released today!
https://www.veeam.com/kb3161

Veeam Backup & Replication 10 Cumulative Patch 2 adds the official VMware vSphere 7 support and includes hotfixes for the following issues reported by our customers on the original build of v10:

Agent Management

  • Managed by Agent backup policies do not respect the retention policy setting for Microsoft Windows machines, always forcing it to 7 regardless of the value specified.

Amazon AWS

  • Added support for Cape Town and Milan data center regions in all related functionality.

Backup Copy

  • Failed GFS full backup transform may result in the job to start failing with the “Failed to process method {Transform.Patch}: There is an item with the specified name and another type” error.

Backup from Storage Snapshots

  • Under certain circumstances, backup jobs may fail with the “Cannot retrieve physical extents for connecting iSCSI target IQN {0} on proxy IQN {1}” error.

Cloud Connect Infrastructure

  • In the environments where the Network Extension Appliance has the same name as the corresponding Tenant, deleting the appliance will also remove tenant’s replicas.
  • Under certain circumstances, task slots may not be released at the end of the job session, resulting in various issues due to lack of available task slots.
  • Cloud Connect Replication fails with the “Cannot find an available target” error in vCloud Director environments with multiple clusters due to not searching all available vDC pools for the required vOrg pool.
  • Using the UseCachedSshConnections registry value may result in jobs to stop running due to already closed connection erroneously cached. This issue may result in various errors, typically “The session is not open” error.
  • Opening the Tenants view takes a long time.

Configuration Database

  • High CPU consumption on the SQL Server hosting the configuration database caused by the AggregateSqlPointsInfo stored procedure during transaction log backup.

File Level Recovery

  • Mounting a restore point with the dynamic disk fails with the “Invalid secondary GPT partition entry array checksum” error.
  • In some environments, mounting a restore point for file-level recovery may fail with the “Invalid secondary GPT header signature” error.

NAS Backup

  • VSS snapshot fails to be created with the “Access is denied” error for SMB file shares hosted on some NAS devices

Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4

It seems Veeam finally changed their mind with B&R Update 4. Veeam B&R Free Edition now changes to Veeam B&R Community Edition which now allows to use full Veeam B&R Standard Edition functionality on the amount of 10 instances, which could be a variation of possibilities, for exmaple (the following are just examples, there can be a lot more combinations as long as 10 instances are not exceeded):

  • 10 VMs
  • 10 Workstations
  • 5 VMs + 5 Workstations
  • 5 VMs + 1 Server + 2 Workstations
  • 1 VM + 3 Servers
  • 3 Servers + 1 Workstation

With Standard Edition instances, VMs consume 1 instance per VM, Server agents consume 3 instances per server, and Workstation agents consume 1 instance per workstation.

It's all for free and Veeam ZIP still got no limitations on the amount of VMs mentioned above.

This is something I personally appreciate a lot as I had planned to change to jump from Veeam B&R Free Edition to Synology Active Backup for Business (which has no(!) lincense limitations, btw.) because those full-and-no-scheduled-backup-limitations of Veeam ZIP made me sick for my homelab.

I don't know what exactly changed their mind in Veeam's lab. Maybe they realized that other vendor's backup software can really turn into a serious competitor very quickly especially focussed on small businesses. But in the end I don't really care as for me and my homelab this is very good news and prevents me from changing to unknown backup software fields.

So for all homelab and very small business users using VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V, it is possible now to run incremental and scheduled backups on all of your VMs via GUI as long as you are not backing up more than 10 instances.

Cheers!

Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4a is available

Release Notes for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4a
https://www.veeam.com/kb2926

Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4a is a cumulative hotfix rollup that addresses issues reported by customers on the original build of Update 4, as well as minor platform support enhancements:

  • VMware vSphere 6.7 U2 readiness, including support for virtual hardware version 15. Please note that the testing has been performed on pre-release 6.7 U2 builds, while official support will still require a comprehensive testing of the generally available build.
  • Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2019 is now supported as a source for Microsoft Hyper-V VMs backup jobs.
  • Dell EMC Data Domain DD OS 6.2 is now supported as the backup repository via both DDBoost and CIFS/NFS protocols.
  • New Japanese Era compatibility. 新元号対応済み

Update 4a resolves the following most common support issues:

  • Upgrade to Update 4 fails with the "Database version downgrade detected ... Reboot and restart the setup" error on machines where system time regional format uses a.m. and p.m. (lowercase with dots)
  • On Hyper-V versions prior to 2016, backup and replication jobs without application-aware processing enabled failing with "The system cannot find the file specified" error.
  • Backup console failing to open after upgrade with "Object reference not set to an instance to an object" from backup console or "Could not load file or assembly" error in the log.
  • Backup of Windows XP SP1 VMs fails with the "Failed to call RPC function Vss.GetFileFromGADir" error.
  • After upgrading to Update 4, SureBackup jobs may start failing due to lack of disk space in the vPower NFS cache folder due to virtual lab settings incorrectly updated during configuration upgrade.
  • VeeamZIP™ operations should no longer consume a license for virtual machine that were previously licensed due to being a part of regular backup jobs.
  • Primary storage integration issues around HPE Nimble, NetApp, IBM and Dell EMC VNX storage.
  • HPE StoreOnce Catalyst library was updated to version 24.90.0.8 fixing the memory leak issue.
  • Tape support reliability improvements, including a number of UI performance issues around tape management functionality.

In addition, Update 4a addresses over 300 minor bugs reported by customers and found during the internal testing.

Veeam Agent Free or Backup & Replication CE?

I am transitioning from my aging, past-EOL WHS 2011 to a new unRAID server, and am looking for something to replace the WHS client backup service (which I thankfully only had to use a couple of times for a restore, but worked flawlessly when I needed it). So far Veeam looks like it should fit the bill.

We have 6 Windows desktop/laptops at home and I'm wondering if the Veeam Agent for Windows Free installed on each machine is enough, backing up to a network share, or if there is a compelling reason to spin up a VM to run B&R CE? I just want scheduled backups for each machine that I can easily restore from if a drive dies.

Thanks for any input!

[Release] Veeam Backup & Replication 10a Cumulative Patch 20201202

The new Update for Veeam Backup & Replication 10a Cumulative Patch 20201202 has been released today.

Public Link: https://www.veeam.com/kb4050
Requirements
Please confirm that you are running version 10a (build 10.0.1.4854) prior to installing this update. You can check this under Help | About in the Veeam Backup & Replication console. After upgrade, your build number will be 10.0.1.4854 P20201202.

What's New
Veeam Backup & Replication 10a Cumulative Patch 20201202 adds support for recently released platform versions:

  • VMware vSphere 7.0 U1 support including new vSphere API version awareness, support for VMs with virtual hardware version 18 and automatic exclusion from processing of the new system VMs used by the vSphere Clustering Service (vCLS) as cluster agents for the High Availability feature.
  • Microsoft Windows 10 version 20H2 and Microsoft Windows Server version 20H2 support as guest OS of VMs protected by host-based backups, for servers and workstations protected by agent-based backups, as Hyper-V hosts and for the installation of Veeam Backup & Replication and its components.
  • RHEL 8.3 and SLES 15 SP2 distributions support by Veeam Agent for Linux 4.0.1.2372 (included in the update), by the Veeam Backup & Replication agent management functionality and for the installation of Veeam Backup & Replication components.
  • Added support for S3-compatible object storage with versioning enabled and object lock disabled on the bucket (for example, Backblaze B2 cloud object storage). When registering such buckets, users will get a warning asking to ensure the bucket is set to clean up older object versions to avoid extra costs.

Resolved Issues
This patch includes a number of fixes for the issues reported by our customers on the original build of version 10a, most significant of which are listed below:

NAS backup: multiple bugs were fixed around corner scenarios based on support cases from early adopters. We recommend that all customers using file share backup job install this patch due to the significant number of fixes it brings.

Image-level backup: two potential data loss scenarios were addressed in the primary backup jobs and in the backup import functionality.

Object storage: scale-out backup repository status email report should now correctl
