Direct Imaging of Atomic Permeation Through a Vacancy Defect in the Carbon Lattice

Atomic vacancies in graphenic lattice can be applied as sieve pores for sieving atoms, ions and molecules. In their Research Article (DOI: 10.1002/anie.202010630), A. Khlobystov, U. Kaiser and co‐workers report the direct observation of the permeation of single palladium atoms passing one‐by‐one through a vacancy defect in a single‐walled carbon nanotube by transmission electron microscopy. The curvature of the carbon lattice drives the permeation in the direction from the concave to the convex side of the membrane due to the difference between metal–carbon bonding with opposite sides.

Direct imaging of atomic permeation through a vacancy defect in the carbon lattice

Porous graphene has shown promise as a new generation of selective membrane for sieving atoms, ions and molecules. However, the atomistic mechanisms of permeation through defects in the graphenic lattice are still unclear and remain unobserved in action, at the atomic level. Here, the direct observation of palladium atoms from a nanoparticle and passing through a defect in a single‐walled carbon nanotube one‐by‐one has been achieved with atomic resolution in real time, revealing key stages of the atomic permeation. Bonding between the moving atom and dangling bonds around the orifice, immediately before and after passing through the subnano‐pore, plays an important role in the process. Curvature of the graphenic lattice crucially defines the direction of permeation from concave to convex side due to a difference in metal‐carbon bonding at the curved surfaces as confirmed by density functional theory calculations, demonstrating the potential of porous carbon nanotube for atom sieving.

Achieve Superior Electrocatalytic Performance by Surface Copper Vacancy Defects during Electrochemical Etching Process

Vacancy defect‐rich Pt‐Cu nanowire networks (VCu‐PtCu) exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen reduction reaction, in which the mass activity is 14.1 times higher than for commercial Pt/C (20 %.wt, JM), and is currently the best performance among unsupported Pt‐based nanomaterials. The Tafel plot shows that VCu‐PtCu delivers a mass activity (MA) 7.2 times higher than the 2020 target set by the US Department of Energy (DOE).

Abstract

Vacancy defects of catalysts have been extensively studied and proven to be beneficial to various electrocatalytic reactions. Herein, an ultra‐stable three‐dimensional PtCu nanowire network (NNW) with ultrafine size, self‐supporting rigid structure, and Cu vacancy defects has been developed. The vacancy defect‐rich PtCu NNW exhibits an outstanding performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), with a mass activity 14.1 times higher than for the commercial Pt/C catalyst (20 %.wt, JM), which is currently the best performance. The mass activity of the PtCu NNW for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is 17.8 times higher than for the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Density‐functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the introduction of Cu vacancies enhances the adsorption capacity of Pt atoms to the HO* intermediate and simultaneously weakens the adsorption for the O* intermediate. This work presents a facile strategy to assemble efficient electrocatalysts with abundant vacancy defects, at the same time, provides an insight into the ORR mechanism in acidic solution.

Discussion Thread: House of Representatives votes on the Build Back Better reconciliation bill

Today, the House is expected to vote on the Build Back Better (BBB) bill, a spending package that is a signature piece of President Biden’s legislative agenda that contains significant social infrastructure spending on health care and child care, as well as large investments to tackle climate change. The vote comes in the wake of a vote earlier this month on the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework, which was a bill that passed by a wide bipartisan margin in the Senate (including the vote of GOP Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell) and with a dozen or so House Republicans backing it as well.

Moderate Democrats in the House had declined to vote for BBB until the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) completed its assessment on the expected cost of the bill. Citing inflation concerns, moderate Democrats such as Oregon Congressman Kurt Schrader and New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer made a push to ensure that the bill would not add to the deficit over its 10 year period. CBO announced earlier this morning that its assessment would be completed later this afternoon, at which point Democrats expect to begin the process of voting on the bill. Unlike the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework, BBB is not expected to attract any Republican votes, meaning Democrats, who hold the House by a narrow 221-213 margin (one vacancy), cannot afford to suffer many defections, and will require the support of all wings of the party to pass the bill.

From there, the bill will head to the Senate, which is expected to continue the process. BBB was passed under reconciliation instructions, meaning that certain pieces of the legislation, particularly immigration reform, may be further removed from the final bill that passes the upper chamber. Democrats cannot afford defections at all in the Senate, which they hold by virtue of Vice President Harris’ tiebreaking vote, and negotiations are still under way with centrist members of the Democratic caucus in the Senate to secure support, particularly from West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, and Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema.

I have finished Frankenstein. Here are my thoughts:

Victor Frankenstein was raised in utmost privilege: his every need and want was met, his parents did not command him but exchanged with him a compliant and attuned respect, his education impassioned him to learning, and as eldest he was the "destined successor" of his noble father, Alphonse Frankenstein.

>Such was our domestic circle, from which care and pain seemed for ever banished. My father directed our studies, and my mother partook of our enjoyments. Neither of us possessed the slightest pre-eminence over the other; the voice of command was never heard amongst us; but mutual affection engaged us all to comply with and obey the slightest desire of each other.

Such an upbringing many people would kill to have, but it gave him a crippling blind spot: he didn't register the reality of evil until his own hands fashioned the creature whose later evil would unravel his entire world. Surely he knew of evil from books and news, but he didn't cite any encounter with evil while recounting his formative events. As such, he was ill-equipped to understand the ramifications of creating the creature, whom I'll call Adam per his wish:

>Remember, that I am thy creature: I ought to be thy Adam; but I am rather the fallen angel, whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed.

While reading, I took detailed commentary notes: Letter 1 - Chapter 1, Chapter 5 - Chapter 11, Chapter 12 - Chapter 20, and Chapter 21 - Chapter 23.

Victor named several events that opened him to being "attacked by the fatal passion" that compelled him to create Adam:

  1. His mother died when he was young. Victor never recovered from the loss, described as an "irreparable evil", despite his heart no longer bleeding. His aim to conquer death was motivated by his inability to accept his mother's passing, as seen when her death is on his mind in his nightmare hours after bringing Adam to life:

>I thought that I held the corpse of my dead mother in my arms; a shroud enveloped her form, and I saw the grave-worms crawling in the folds of the flannel. I started from my

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Just because it's a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

r/unclejokes for dirty jokes

r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC

r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes

Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub
