Scope:

Welcome back, and welcome to the New Year. It's now v 3.10 which feature's Theseus' Bane for the campaign which yields this review's Legendary Tier Headliner, HMS Minotaur. Minotaur hails from one of the oldest lines in World of Warships on the whole, despite her recent addition to World of Warships Legends under the Royal Navy. Minotaur is a GREAT ship, though she has a HIGH skill floor, she has an EXTREME skill ceiling.

I acquired Minotaur by purchasing the first 40 levels of the campaign, then completing the other 80. This ship was not given to me by Wargaming for review.

Legendary Tier ships are not considered Premium Ships, and as such, are subject to balance changes. This review is a time stamp of her current statistics upon release in her campaign and may not reflect changes made to the ship in later updates.

History:

In 1946, the First Sea Lord requested a rework of the current designs focusing on improving the well-known habitability issues plaguing the cruiser designs of the era. The Director for Gunnery and Anti-Air Division proposed the design should be armed with dual purpose 6" and 3" gunnery, learning and incorporating the design of the then in construction USS Worcester. The Director of Naval Construction then developed several designs.

Formed in the later years of World War 2, Design Z, was named the Minotaur Class and was a planned design that incorporated several such variations of a Light Cruiser Design with a very profound Anti-Air armament, improved crew habitability, while incorporating lessons learned from the War and increase international cooperation with the United States. The design featured an upgraded, Mk 26 Turret saw vast improvements in automatic reloading and full Remote Power Control. The gun reloaded considerably faster, with an improvement of 9-12 shells per minute over the existing Mk 24 and saw the Mk 26 entering service under different but completed designs such as the HMS Tiger (C-20).

Since reading through the entire Solar Cycle of books (New Sun > Long Sun > Short Sun) and related short stories (including The Cat, The Map, Empires of Foliage and Flower, etc), I’ve been convinced there is strong connective tissue binding the series, not just the “Red Sun Whorl” visitations involving Silk meeting Severian—which some fans think are fan service-y or tacked on clumsily, and not just the fact that Pas is Typhon. Continuing in that vein: Could The Tale of the Student and his Son serve as an addition or alternative origin story for the Galactic conqueror Typhon?

Much has been written regarding Typhon’s origin being “encoded” in another “The Wonders of Urth and Sky” (Aka the “Brown Book”) story: “The Tale of the Boy Called Frog”, a story which Severian tells Little Severian in Sword of the Lictor while they are camped at the foot of Mount Typhon. There most certainly is one possible origin for Typhon in that tale. But consider how varied the tales of gods and heroes and their origins and adventures were in Greek myth—each Polis had a different tale or spin on events, and gods often rose and fell in prominence in conjunction with their patron city state. The antiquity and abundance of temples to Hera hint at a time when she may’ve been more highly-exalted than her lightning-throwing husband, and hero-king founder of Athens Theseus is sometimes the son of Aegeus and other times the son of Poseidon, god of the Oceans, to name but two examples of this.

The mythic allusions in “The Tale of the Student and His Son” point us towards Theseus and his fateful encounter with the Cretan Minotaur. Could they also point us forward to a time when factions within the Galactic Empire took drastic measures to overthrow a Tyrannical regime? Alongside the Theseus myth in the Tale there is the story of the creation of a perfect leader who is “fleshed from dreams”. Throughout the Book of the New Sun we’re given glimpses of technology which allows dead people to be generated/reanimated from the memories (and dreams?) of the living. Specifically, the AI core of the Hierodule’s spaceship/timeship generates Eidolons of Master Malrubius and Triskele from the mind of Severian. So perhaps the faction in the “Galactic Civil War” I theorize is made up of Techno-priests who are adept at genetic engineering and masters of the Eidolon-making technology. I think the Student’s so

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

Scope:

It's v 3.8 during the Origin of Wisdom Campaign for Mainz and Sirocco. Next up on the review list for this update is another older cruiser, Atago, which represents one of the first campaign and later GXP ships brought to the game. For many cruiser players, Atago represents one of their first premium ships or playstyles they will have learned. Atago is available in the shop for 750k Global XP. Atago is an AVERAGE ship with a MODERATE skill floor and a HIGH skill ceiling.

History:

Named after Mount Atago, Atago was the second of the Takao-Class Cruisers, though she would be completed 2 months earlier than sister Takao. Laid down in April 1927 at Kure Naval Arsenal, Atago was launched in June 1930, and commissioned into the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1932. During trials, Atago and sister Takao faced seaworthiness issues due to their top-heaviness. By 1940, the ships were altered by reducing the size of the bridge, moving the main mast aft, and adding torpedo bulges which then improved the stability of the ship.

The design was an improvement over the preceding Myoko class, which sought to resolve many of the issues of the class, with improved Anti-Air, moving the torpedoes to the upper deck, and featured 10x Type 3 20cm Naval Guns in twin turrets. The Type 3 20cm gun was the heaviest of any heavy cruiser at the time. Akin to her predecessors, Atago was top-heavy. Akin to her sisters, Atago was upgraded repeatedly throughout her career receiving numerous Anti-Air upgrades, and eventually the Type 93 Oxygen Torpedo. Her original Anti-Air Suite was woefully inadequate with just a pair of 40mm guns, which changed as she received over 60 Type 96 AA guns during the course of her upgrades.

Atago participated in many major naval battles throughout the Pacific Theatre of World War 2. Atago met her fate on 23 October 1944 in the Palawan Passage, when USS Darter struck Atago with 4 torpedoes setting her ablaze, quickly capsizing claiming 360 of her crew. Atago served as Admiral Kurita's flagship at the time she was struck; Kurita was among the 520+ rescued by Yugumo-Class sisters Asashimo and Kishinami.
