... keep reading on reddit β‘I have a tough time finding good t-shirts that fit and feel good... but the last couple years, the Wrightsville Beach Turkey Trot race shirts have been great. Does anyone know where they are supplied from? I'd like to order more... hopefully non-turkey-themed.
So sad that my favorite (and only) race is cancelled this year! I have been training to do the 10k instead of the 2 miles that I normally do. And Iβll still definitely run a 10k, but it wonβt be quite the same feeling. Anyone else an enthusiastic turkey trotter?
If the mods want to make a βvirtual turkey trotβ post where people enter their distance, time, and favorite thanksgiving food, I think that would be fun :)
Edit: awesome guys! Love to hear that this is a big tradition for other families too. Even if mods donβt make a post, I will put something up at 7am ET on thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving r/Running! For those of you missing your normal Turkey Trot, I am organizing a bit of a virtual Turkey Trot for the subreddit. Here is a short form for you to fill out with your distance, time, and favorite thanksgiving food.
https://forms.gle/whejEj1ae2ruKrmPA
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OFrTuqEcLlZ0UaogSIBqX9iVANYDXhVRFr6yE69jyW8/edit?usp=sharing (excel sheet)
Then write more detailed race report or thanksgiving report in the comments!
I will compile the results every so often and edit my post to show winners, fastest food, longest distance, etc. I'm going for my 10k at 8:30 am ET so I hope a few of you join me :)
Also, no awesome T-shirts this year, but if you feel like spending 10 bucks anyway, go donate to https://help.endhomelessness.org/donate/ or the charity of your choosing!

### Training
I've mentioned it in some earlier posts, but I'm an ex-D1 athlete who decided to pick up running after college. I was always decent at running on a one-off occasion (could run a 17:15-17:45 5k on command) but really struggled to transition to *training* for running, picking up a few injuries when I first started out due to my total lack of understanding of the sport and for wanting to train the same way I trained in college right off the bat. I willed myself to a low-1:20s HM and low-2:50s half/full on ~20-25mpw the fall after I graduated but did so with no structure (1 workout and 1 long run a week with a random 70 mile peak week thrown in (as dumb as it sounds)). At the start of quarantine after suffering another unnecessary injury, I reached out to a coach to help provide me with some structure and help me put my college fitness to use. I also work a long-hours white-collar job that sometimes ruins entire weeks of training, or I sometimes end up running on 3-5 hours of sleep more than I'd like.
I trained for and ran a few mile TTs in the spring - worked from 5:02 to the 4:30s after a few attempts - and was preparing for a 10k cycle this fall. Work got in the way and averaging ~15 mpw in August and September, coach and I agreed on a reset. I got some reprieve from work and started stringing together some really solid workouts, including an 8x1k/60" jog averaging ~3:17 and a 10x400/short jog averaging ~73. My long run pace also went from ~7:00 average for 10-14 in June to ~6:30 average more recently (with the occasional ~60' 10mi stretch peppered in) and I just started feeling more comfortable. I put this race on the calendar knowing that these sorts of ~8 week training stretches where I missed ZERO sessions were rare with my job and I wanted to put this fitness to use!
### Pre-race
Light rain and mid 40s. Planned on 7:30am start time so got up at 5:15, had a Monster, 2 cups of beet juice and 2 clif bars before putting on some Denzel Curry and driving over to the track.

I ran the Seattle Marathon in December 2019 as my first marathon, and hit the wall at mile 20 / run-walked the last 6 miles, but still had a great experience and was happy enough with my time (3:24ish). Since covid hit, I haven't run any races, so when I had the day off work, I decided to start with a long run. My goal was to run the first 20, the run-walk the rest, but do more if possible.
In my first marathon, I only used one gel, which was totally insufficient. I've been stomach training -- eating a gel on long runs -- and found I really enjoyed them. Basically eating flavored frosting! Part of the goal here was to enjoy some gels. I brought along an espresso flavor, chocolate flavor, and berry flavor.
I didn't do any particularly training for this, but I've been running a steady 60 miles a week for most of the past year with a weekly long run between 14 and 18 miles. For a course, I plotted a route leaving from my home and running back and forth along the edge of West Seattle -- an out and back for ~18 miles, then a partial out and back until my watch said 26.2.
I woke up at 6:30 and ate a small bowl of cereal, then back to bed for another hour of sleep. After repeatedly using the restroom -- gotta empty the intestines! -- I headed out.
0 - 9 miles -- smooth heading out, none of my niggling injuries showed up. Miles 2-3 were through a crowded park, so lots of people dodging, then on to the roads. I have a habit of counting the number of Porsches and Teslas I see -- the final count for today was 13 porsches to 9 teslas. I had headphones in a pocket, but didn't need any.
9 - 13 miles -- as preplanned, I met up with a cow

Finished 8-3 on Wednesday, which is the end of my c25k app. I switched to RunKeeper for today (and didn't realize you had to manually stop it at the end of the run, which is why it's got a brief cooldown in the stats), and got up on a nice 60F morning to try a dry run at the actual 5K. Did it with no trouble, and I gotta say it feels pretty good down the home stretch to think about all the work, how far you've come, and where you're at. Just a few months ago I looked at those 20+ min runs in the final program weeks and in my head I didn't truly believe I'd ever really get to that point, but I shut my brain off and just did it.
I took this program much more slowly than most, but I did genuinely go from not running at ALL to being able to run a complete 5K. I used to think people who ran were "not like me". But now that IS me. Thanks to everybody who posts here and got me some insights along the way.
My splits were all within a few seconds of 12 minutes per mile. Obviously that needs to come up, I'm 41 and 6'1", I should be able to do a 30 minute 5K. I tried at a few points to run at a 6mph (10 minute mile) pace, and it was doable but couldn't have sustained it the whole way. During both 8-3 and today's run, I got a mild side-stitch, which hadn't happened since the very early weeks.
So now the goal is to run my Turkey Trot next week, and then start working on the pace. I am a little afraid that, without the goals of the structured program, doing these runs will become just another workout and start to feel like a slog rather than an adventure. I'm gonna try to mix up locales and routes to keep it fresh. I could try to do the 10K training eventually but with limited daylight hours to practice I'm probably best holding off on that until Spring. If anyone reading this has any tips on improving pace, or on keeping motivated when you don't have the progressive time goals of the program to lead you on anymore, let me know. Should I try to run 1 mile at my desired pace and then the rest at the slower pace and slowly adjust the ratio?

I know itβs only 5k but my wife is going to walk with me and wants to break it up into two walks. I found out the ten miles i did this morning on the elliptical didnβt count so I want to know if you have to do it all at once. Happy Thanksgiving! π¦
Does anyone know if any turkey trots are being run virtually this year? Still would like to run a route but obviously not with huge of people. Thanks for any help/ tips/ routes
