What are your favourite smells in the lab?

I know a lot of chemists love to sniff everything. We used to taste things too, before lab safety was a thing. I think the first artificial sweetener was discovered this way.

So, I really love benzaldehyde, and the vanillin we used for exposing TLC plates. I bought a shower oil with benzaldehyde in it, it's wonderful, I smell like marzipan.

Also diethylether is fantastic, I have fond memories of drying ruthenium solar-dye filter cakes by tipping litres of ether over them in a walk-in fume cupboard. Despite the ventilation, I would become rather giggly, ether makes filtration fun πŸ˜…

Apart from the nice ones, I have a strange affinity to some of the toxic smells, toluene and the CHxClx series. But with these I just take a cheeky little sniff, lab accidents cause too much paperwork. :D

What do y'all like? I'm curious, our sense of smell is a very personal thing.

DMT+HCl turned into a really dark purple liquid

I had some dmt in a glass container that wouldn't crystallize(It was for sure dmt bc of the smell and someone tried it.) I tought of adding a bit of hcl to it, maybe it will turn into dmt hcl idk just to see what happens, now it is a really dark purple liquid(Oily I think by the looks of it) the smell I think is really pungent? I tried smelling it, it threw me away instantly somewhat burning sensation, HCl doesn't do this.

What could it be? Do I wait for it to fully evap and see what happens? add a bit of toluene? idk

EDIT: I belive I have destroyed it with the hcl.

EDIT: Oxidized myb not necesarilly destroyed. Here is a guy doing about the same thing in 2009 https://www.dmt-nexus.me/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=8466

Does anyone know anything about it?
I will let it dry and then post some photos, I tried smelling it again, it smells like the most toxic thing I have ever encountered.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Questions regarding Kash’s A/B tek

In step Step 8 Kash mentions adding 0.5ml of concentrated HCl to the toluene until the pH tests acidic. Then in step 9 we separate the toluene and water, save the water and evaporate. And step 10 is a MEK wash leaving Mescaline HCl.

My question is what happens to the concentrated HCl? It’s poisonous no? So how was it removed during this process?

And when evaporation occurred in step 9 was some toxic residue left behind? Is this why we wash it with the MEK process, and if so when we decant it off, wouldn’t some residue still remain on the crystals?

Or is it when the HCl is added to the water, it does something when it reaches a pH of 7 to the alkaloids making it consumable? Hence mescaline HCl. And the MEK wash is only for purification. I know HCl is used in pools and on the occasion people accidentally drink that lol.

Thanks.

Enamines, oxidations, benzene alternatives.

Hi, my project includes formation of a Ξ²,Ξ²-disubstituted enamine. Then oxidative dehomologation affords N-formyl amine derivative (eg. N-formylpiperidine if piperidine was used to form the enamine) and a ketone product. There are 3 instances of an acetic acid/benzene system for the oxidation using dichromate (apparently sodium dichromate is soluble in GAA, while potassium dichromate isn't) in the literature. I'm aiming for these, as they would enable the procedure to be one pot (enamine formation with a Dean-Stark trap + catalytic p-TSA and then the benzene enamine solution oxidation).

However, in most labs benzene is frowned upon due to it's toxicity. An obvious substitute would be toluene, but I'm worried about it messing up the oxidation. Can't think of anything that would be suitable for both of these reactions other than benzene.

Additionally, according to one paper (Harris et al., 1995, Tetrahedron Letters) that system leads to an impurity in the form of the hydrolysis product. Could it be possible that the problem lies in use of dihydrate of the dichromate and not the anhydrous salt?

I'd be very thankful for any input regarding working with enamines (both derived form aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes) and maybe even their oxidations if anyone submerged their toes into that topic.

These aren't dad jokes...

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.

This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.

If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.

Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
