I know it's never good to hear about things like this but I think it's necessary to be aware that they're always happening.
The snowpack in SW Montana is pretty crummy right now but we've had some good dumps the past week or so, our first real snowfall for 2019. The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center suggested that backcountry users take it easy and be aware of what they're skiing on top of before they get out.
Be safe out there. Know before you go.
Edit (several days later): Three skiers were experienced backcountry skiers with Avy1 certification. One skier had some avalanche training. Full report released.
I'm planning a little backpacking trip. If we're being honest, I'm a FL native that routinely gets bored with the flatlands and I'm running out of things to do in the Smokies. I realize a lot of these questions could be answered by the forest service but they've been shit about returning my calls and emails so maybe ya'll can give me some guidance.
After a bit of research I'm interested in the Lost Cabin Lake and Louise Lake areas.
Firstly, from what I've been able to find, both areas are open to camping, yes?
Secondly, it seems Montana considers rabbits, squirrels, etc nongame species open for huntimg and at least some parts of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest are open to hunting, but I haven't been able to get an answer as to whether or not I can in the areas I plan on going to. This isn't a dedicated hunting trip, I'm mostly just looking to supplement my rations a bit.
Finally, what are the average temps I can expect? I lived in ND for two years so I'm equipped to deal with the cold, I just need to know what to expect.
