A list of puns related to "To Kill a Mockingbird"
I've got to have something like 50 quotes for an english worksheet on Monday... anyone got anything? please include who said it ;-;
I really heard some schools are removing this book from required reading because it makes people "uncimfortable". This book showed me Americas "great" past of slavery, racism, sexism and how old white men pathetically need to subjugate other people. This is a brief glimpse at the worst bits of our countries past and should always be required reading in all public schools if we really want to bring equality for all to the USA. It was a really check to my own white privilege at an age where I needed the wake up call. What do other avid DFTBA readers think about this classic read?
And I just keep thinking about that little girl rolling down the street inside of that tire.
Back in the day, if you had a child as a teenager but had βyoungβ parents and wanted to keep your dignity, youβd lie and say they were your younger sibling. Jack Nicholson grew up thinking his mother was his older sister and didnt find out until he was 37. Bob probably does sleep around but why would any woman drop off her children to him knowing of his reputation? In addition mayella is a teenager and canβt remember her mother. If she canβt how does she have all those siblings? Maybe again the moms drop them off but it seems kind of unlikely.
Another big part is that sexual abuse was super underreported in the time period because back then you didnβt hand your laundry out to dry. Unless townspeople caught him forcing himself on her, which he probably wouldnβt do, nobody would know or care beyond it being a rumor. Corporeal punishment like bruises we already know they donβt care about: even scout gets hit by Calpurnia. So Mayella being hit wouldnβt be that big a deal unfortunately. Mayella also has a warped idea on love, likely from this and says that βwhat her papa does doesnβt count.β
Scout in the story is also a young child who thinks that babies come from a stork. She might not realize that Atticus is saying mayellaβs siblings are her children to protect her dignity.
Just heard Michael Che say this on Saturday Night Live a few moments ago, and I thought it was hilarious!!!
The question could also be phrased as: Can you say just one conventional word and get me to name a certain, obvious book?
"Conventional" was chosen carefully. The more conventional, the better. Otherwise, it's too easy to come up with crafted words like "doublespeak" and "groupthink" from 1984, "hobbit" from Lord of the Rings, or "tharn" from Watership Down.
I thought this was fun and wondered what anyone would find and suggest. Thanks in advance!
Found this while helping my daughter today. "Sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whisky bottle in the hand of (another)... There are just some kind of men who - who're so busy worrying about the next world they've never learned to live in this one, and you can look down the street and see the results."

As far as I know, every public high school goes over these, but why?
I just wanted to share it with someone. I picked up the book from the hospital library while we wait for our daughter to get better.m and I finished it within a week. Now I feel sad because its over and I got very close to the characters. I have to admit it made me want to be able to sit on the porch of a farm house while drinking iced tea and watching the sunset of a warm afternoon. I am in Canada right now and it I am freezing as I write this.
I've been a voracious reader since my childhood (I'm in college at the time of writing this). I've read loads of modern fiction books and series from different genres as well as non-fiction books on many interesting topics. I believe that a book is like downloading the entire research/experience of the author into some pages and reading is like uploading the entire information into your memory.
Despite reading so much, I've somehow never gotten around to reading classics. My closest experience to it came in my school days where I read Shakespeare's Ceaser story, Gulliver Travels, and Three men in a boat. That's it. That's all the classic books I've read. I don't know why but I've always imagined classics to be sort of boring books (I know, I'm probably totally wrong on this) and felt that I won't be able to relate to that old time eras and cultures of the time.
Now, three days back, I was traveling via bus, and it was a long journey. I knew that I was gonna get bored outta my mind, so I bought a cheap To Kill a Mockingbird from a shop in the bus station. I settled down in my seat and started reading it. The first page was difficult. The next one was tougher. I thought of putting down this book with such a boring start but then realized that without reading the book I was gonna get bored anyway and the book won't make it any worse.
So, I tried to make it through the 3rd page. Then the 4th and then the 5th page. Somehow, by the time I finished the sixth page, I was so deeply immersed in the book that when I looked up and away from the book due to a bus jerk, I was already on the 50th page! And the story was only getting better! Today I'm on page 181 and the story has captivated me completely, the buildup to the important scenes as well as the character development is amazing. The way Harper Lee has tried to portray all the events from the eyes of young kids is quite something. The scene where Atticus was outside the jail and talking to Mr. Cunningham and the rest of the mob, unfolded so beautifully that it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
So, to all the people who are afraid to dive into classics, afraid that the book will be boring, I ask you to force yourself to get through the first couple of pages and I promise that you'll get sucked into the story. Give that book a chance and it will reward you with an amazing story. I now understand that these books are called classics for a reason. Alright, I'm gonna go finish reading the book now

I remember reading this book in school. I canβt believe people out there are trying to ban it now :/ Atticus Finch is awesome.
EDIT: I mentioned tomorrow in the title twice. Whoops
I could definitely see Leo DiCap being cast as Atticus Finchβ or somebody along those lines
