I mean; what the fuck?
During the scene, all we hear are Harry’s scared (?) screams. When Wormtail slices his hand off, he screams... but after that he just sort of stands there, dumbstruck, seemingly in no pain at all.
He’s a sniveling coward, but even courageous men would emote trauma and pain if they cut off their own hand! He should have been writhing on the ground! Instead, he stared ahead, gormless. Just... a fixture.
Seriously, what were Timothy Spall and Mike Newell thinking?! No wonder the guy directed only one film. It’s really hard to fuck up the catalyst of the book into darker territory, but he managed to do it.
The one thing I will give the director full credit for, however, is the scene after Harry returns to Hogwarts. The happy, cheery music and clapping slowly dying away as the crowd realizes that something is wrong... and the heart-wrenching ”That’s my boy!” From Amos Diggory. It is a perfect scene.
I only wish the rest of the movie weren’t garbage.
