The majority of reactions to a minority position are thought-terminating clichés

Be in in philosophy or politics, whenever some minority position is voiced, the backlash consist mostly of people regurgitating the same talking points that have been addressed time and time again by people who holds the position. I'm going to list a few examples :

  • Veganism : plants are alive tho
  • Feminism : why do you hate men?
  • Anti-capitalism : but you buy stuff!
  • Anti-natalism : so why don't you kill yourself?

The list could go on and on but you get the idea. It's perfectly fine to debate anything, but make sure you do your research before so that you can critique the actual position instead of a complete straw man of it.

Thought-terminating cliché is a form of loaded language, commonly used to quell cognitive dissonance. Its only function is to stop an argument from proceeding further, in other words "end the debate with a cliche... not a point." Examples include "it is what it is", "stop thinking so much", etc. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tho…

Favourite Thought Terminating Cliché

A thought terminating cliché is a simple phrase that is often used to dismiss cognitive dissonance. The term was coined in 1961 in a book dealing with Chinese brainwashing.

Church leaders frequently teach these clichés and members happily use them. So what are your favourites?

I'll start with the most recent instant classic: Doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith.

I'll add: Wickedness never was happiness.

Your turn.

Hate Weeks and the Thought-terminating cliché

In "1984", Hate Week is celebrated in late summer. Today in the world we live in, we celebrate it at least once a month, and we have Hate Weeks of various kinds, directed at various groups and/or countries. It's actually quite elaborate now. Global Hate Weeks, National Hate Weeks, Issue Hate Weeks, and even People Hate Weeks. These are four kinds of Hate Weeks I'll focus on in this post. They aren't celebrated on a schedule, or at least a schedule anyone of us actually knows about. They seem to appear spontaneously out of events we see or read about on "The News". What are the goals of Hate Weeks?

"The aggregate effect of Hate Week thus is to excite the populace to such a point that they 'would unquestionably have torn [captured enemy soldiers] to pieces' if given the opportunity."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_week

Social media is a fabulous vehicle for Hate Weeks. The current slogan is usually wrapped in a #hashtag that propagates and becomes "viral". Those who do not propagate the slogan or hashtag are suspect.

Our current calendar year began with a massive Global Hate Week, which turned out to be more like a Hate Month. It was called the Charlie Hebdo Massacre. While we mourned the loss of satirical cartoonists shot dead by barbaric extremist Muslims, we celebrated various kinds of Hate. We hated on Muslims of all kinds, especially those who did not feel the need to apologize for the crimes perpetrated in their name. We hated on so-called "liberals" who did not feel compelled to spread the "jesuischarlie" slogan/hashtag, or were even more bold and stated "Jenesuispascharlie". We hated on the "conspiracy theorists" who did not believe the official version of events, because they are dangerous in their pathological tendency to "disbelieve". We hated as we celebrated free speech, except speech we didn't like. In France, a comedian named Dieudonne M'bala M'bala was given a two month suspended sentence for posting "I feel like Charlie Coulibaly" on Facebook.

That is a Global Hate Week. During Global Hate Weeks, we mourn as we hate. Death is usually the important trigger for Global Hate Weeks, because grief, properly harnessed, is a powerful engine for hate.

National Hate Weeks, as you would expect, are limited to national boundaries. These also tend to include death as a crucial component to foster hate. Canada had its National Hate Week when a series of shootings occurred on October 22, 2014 at Parliament Hill in Ottawa. A soldier at the Canad

"It was like the Twilight Zone" ... "It sounds cliché but I thought, Am I done for?" - woman rescued by military after flooding cuts off highways in BC. I'm struck by how media culture is referenced, even with some disgust, as a way to relate experiences. Why do we disdain clichés?

Here's the article.

"I know it's cliché, but blah blah blah" except the cliché often nails it. I'm struck by how, 1) we use movies and TV to frame our own experiences and 2) if the frame has been "done to death" and feels ham-fisted we have a sometimes-visceral reaction like some sort of hipster that we would be so casual as to have a cliché experience?

Also, "The Twilight Zone" was the most current reference you could come up with?? **Gag**
