The Umbrella academy and many New TV series/ Films are predictable.

So a few days ago i starten to watch The Umbrella Academy. I liked the series but my problem is i was able to predict nearly the whole plot in episode 2. This happens to me a lot in movies. I think This is why i dont like movies as much as i did. I think this is a common problem because there is not much completly new in Hollywood so i hope someone could give me some movie/series names where this is not a problem or less a problem because im bored of the most films and series After First few episodes

Umbrella Academy is one of the few instances where the trailer is as good as the show itself.

Excellent pacing and a lot of fun all throughout, the show also has a lot of mystery and it's very good at planting the seeds of those mysteries very early on in a way that keeps you watching.

Seven episodes in, I was surprised to find out the comic was actually written by the lead singer of My Chemical Romance, GΓ©rard Way.

Very cool.

Edit: Had to binge to avoid the spoilers but I enjoyed reading your opinions about this show because I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Yes, there were some elements that weren't particularly illustrative,

Yes, there were some cliches, but they seemed intentional.

Maybe, as James Cameron has showed us, sometimes oft used story elements and tropes can make something really dynamic feel as familiar as yesterday and as fresh as tomorrow all at once.

I very much appreciated the different characters and the meditation on mental health they would sometimes provide. One of the characters, for instance, struggles with addiction. He uses drugs because of the traumatic elements of his reality that only he can see. Now, he can describe his experiences to people, but sometimes words fail to properly describe one's own personal experiences.

The show kinda pivots into comedy then has very serious moments similar to Barry on HBO, which some people may not appreciate but I appreciate very much. I couldn't really connect to the Marvel shows on Netflix, or the Agents of Shield, they all kinda felt like pre-Avengers level stuff which, besides Iron Man, didn't really work for me beyond the action and effects.

All together, I give the show a solid A. The music, the pathology, the visual stimulation, it all felt so fresh and relevant.

Despite it's flaws and vagaries, I'm thankful this show exists. Some of us find catharsis in this kind of stuff. And by some of us I mean me.

Yes, I know it's a combination of Hellboy, Watchmen, Heroes, X-Men, Avengers, Sixth Sense, Blade 3, Mannequin 2 and the Judge Reinhold vehicle, Vice/Versa, but altogether is that really a bad thing???

Ahem...cough

[DISCUSSION] The Umbrella Academy (2019)

First time posting a discussion here, please bear with me.

I was honestly surprised that this comic book had a Netflix adaptation. I knew The Umbrella Academy as a comic from MCR lead vocals' Gerard Way (though I haven't really read it.) I watched this out of pure curiosity.

SYNOPSIS The Umbrella Academy is about a group of 'special' siblings that have different abilities. Currently separated, they are brought back together by a murder mystery that makes them work together again as they solve the case.

THE GOOD The premise is mysterious enough that it leaves you wanting more by the end of the first episode. The characters are so diverse, you will WANT to see their interaction with each other.

Honestly, these siblings have deep enough characterization that you will grow to love them. Most of the characters (if not all) are very likeable. You can see that every one of them has a goal or motivation for their actions.

It takes on the theme of Time Travel, Family Dysfunction, Jealousy, Betrayal, Addiction, and Loyalty on a very good approach.

It also has a right blend of serious and light mood for its scenes. Honestly I wouldn't want to watch a series that takes itself too seriously on a premise like this. So good job to that.

I also really enjoyed the flashbacks of the siblings to when they were still kids. Those were the scenes that was most "superhero"-ish to me.

And finally, what I think that it got so good was.........its Music

Oh man. The background music for the whole series was so good. They got the right songs for the right scenes. It must've cost a fortune to get rights for all that music. When the music starts playing, I feel so engaged in the scene (when "Don't stop me now" by Queen played on a certain shootout/chase scene, I got goosebumps.)

THE BAD The plot can get.........messy. If you're not paying much attention to the dialogue and how the story progresses, you can get pretty confused. There are a lot of elements that get introduced episode per episode that some people can get easily confused. Well, this series involves time travel, so I guess that's a given.

If you're a time-travel purist, I'm guessing you won't like this series very much. This series doesn't just hold on to a single, set, series of events. On the ending, you will be left to think: Is this the way it was supposed to happen, or did this happen because something changed? Or something along those lines.

RECOMMENDATION Overall, I thought the story was engaging, and t

[TV] [IIL] The Umbrella Academy, [WEWIL]

So I recently started watching The Umbrella Academy, and more recently just finished it. I wasn't sure if it was going to be for me, but it turns out I LOVED it. I want to find more series in the same vein, something kind of mystery box-ey, but that doesn't take itself too seriously and is a little bit lighter.

Less Lost, more The Good Place.

Less Westworld, more Russian Doll kind of vibes.

I love Westworld and The Leftovers and all that too, but I'm just in the mood for somewhat lighter fare lately.

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated! Thanks y'all!

Loving the Umbrella Academy. Just giving it a boost here.

If you haven't checked out the series, The Umbrella Academy (Based on a Dark Horse comic), I give it a thumbs up. It's more of a pre-apocalyptic than a post-apocalyptic series. And Number Five is the best character (isn't that also the robot from Short Circuit? Anyway...) Loved season 1.

Chacha and Hazel! - best hitmen (hit-people?).

The logistics of the powers in Umbrella Academy.

Each of the children’s powers appears to alter mass and energy physics in some way shape or form.

Luther: His super strength and relative indestructible body are impossible even at his enhanced size, so the only possibility is that his body is altered to control the potential and kinetic energy inside him. He likely has a increased amount of potential energy which allows him to release increased amounts of kinetic energy as excess strength. His durability is also likely due to his body absorbing incoming mechanical energy and dispersing it. Obviously this isn’t perfect or he would be immune to all physical weapons.

Diego: his ability to hold his breath forever is either some form of pocket dimension in his lungs that can feed his body air, or his is biologically altered so his body can filter air from his environment, which means as long as oxygen is present he can safely hold his breath. His ability to curve objects in flight, once he has thrown them, might be a minor form of telekinesis. It’s possible that once he has contact with an object he forms a connection with it and can alter the forces acting on it after it leaves his body for a period of time, thus allowing him to alter the flight paths of objects.

Allison: Her abilities allow her to alter reality with her voice. Anything she says becomes true, as long as it’s prefaced by I have a rumor. This is hard to explain, but I believe it is similar to Vanya’s powers. A specific sound: β€œI heard a rumor”, and whatever follows, will then allow her to alter the world. In other words, she uses the sound produced by her voice and uses and multiplies that energy to alter reality and time, thus allowing her retroactive abilities. Or, she has the ability to simply persuade God, or the shows/comics equivalent. When Klaus dies, God, or whatever tells him β€œI made you so I can pick and choose.” This indicates that the Umbrella Academy were made by this being for a specific purpose. It’s possible Allison was made to allow her to justifiably alter the world and reality. Maybe Allison’s phrase sets off this being, or another powerful entity, and persuades it to change the world.

Klaus: In the universe it’s clear that their is some sort of afterlife, and thus some sort of metaphysical representation of life after death. For the sake of simplicity, I’ll call this a soul. Let’s assume that souls are a specific wavelength of energy that is undiscovered. If Klaus is attuned to this energy, then maybe he can see the soul

I want theories as to what the Temps Commission is so afraid of in Umbrella Academy.

When speaking to the Handler, 5 asks about why they want to bring about the end of everything, to which the Handler responds "Not everything, just *something*" -- I have a feeling there is some kind of connection to the Commission, and whatever species Reginald Hargreeves belongs to. In the flashback of Hargreeves' past, we get the sense that he is incredibly old, having migrated to the United States in what appears to be the late 1800s, after living on a planet with pretty advanced space-exploration technology.

What were the people from the other planet running from that they were launching so many missiles / migrating to Earth?

How did Hargreeves know when the Commission planned the apocalypse?

Is the threat that the Commission is planning to remove with the apocalypse related to why Hargreeves' people had to flee their original planet?
