In the Chinese SciFi novel "The Three Body Problem" the mass violence and persecution of the Cultural Revolution are important plot points that are often revisited throughout, what is the view of the Cultural Revolution and its consequences in modern China?

I was especially curious as the novel and it's writer Liu Cixin are incredibly popular in China but the scenes describing things like Struggle Sessions, and the radicalism of the Red Guards seem like scathing descriptions that one would assume would be censored by the CCP, yet Liu has even spoken in support of the Chinese government and the novel has been adapted into a TV series in China. Are the negative consequences of the Cultural Revolution largely recognized in China?

Why are the majority of western novels bad? My favorite book is Lonesome Dove. But since then I’ve tried to read other western books, primarily from William W Johnstone and the plot and characters are thin as paper.

Why is this? I personally find western TV a lot better than the book medium. What do you think?

Best action/thriller novel of the last 21 years with plot AND characters (that’s not part of a series)

Hi all I’m looking for a book I can get lost in over the holiday break.

I’d like a thumping great plot and believable characters (usually a failing in thrillers) that I care about.

I’d like to be able to jump straight into a novel and not have to read a whole series to understand the characters.

Thank you

Really tired of transmigrated MCs who are hell bent on forcing the plot back on track and act like a 3rd party because they're in a novel.

I quite enjoy stories where the MC transmigrates into a book, because I like stories where the MC has the advantage of foresight. But it really gets on my nerves when they depend too much on it, especially when they have already changed the plot with their own hands. Like when the MC transmigrates into a character that is supposed to die, so they do things differently from the original character to avoid dying. But then they insist on expecting things to happen just like in the original story and if it doesn't, then they try to make the plot go back to normal. Like, if things went like in the original, you'd be dead dumbass.

Also, when MC acts like shit that happens around them has nothing to do with them and observe everything like an onlooker. Brushing it off when other characters care about MC and only see other characters as dummies without feelings or their own thoughts and only follow whatever was written in the novel. Or when they act like nothing will happen to them, because the character they are right now wasn't in the main plot or something.

Novels with inaccurate plot descriptions on NU or novels you read for the wrong reasons?

Just tried reading Those Years in Quest of Honor Mine. The plot summary of NU is inaccurate. The MC and ML do not serve different masters, they simply belong to two different parts of the aristocracy and are related to two different members of the imperial family. The fabricated rumors of a past love affair between the MC and ML don't have much impact on the story after the beginning, and the ML isn't fooled/brainwashed into believing that he had an affair with the MC back in the day.

This turned out to be a completely different book than I expected, and if I had known, I would have given up sooner or not bothered to read in the first place. I wish someone had pointed it out in reviews instead of everyone mindlessly praising it.

Have anyone else come across plot summaries or have gotten recommendations that just gave you a really wrong impression of a story, and it turned out to be a bad reading experience?

Feeling defeated, excellent series just came out, the plot, characters, world-building, ideas are extremely similar to a novel I have been writing for the last 4 years. How to get creative again ?

I really don't have much to add to this title already, I feel awful because the execution is amazing and writing excellent, I feel like my piece will never top that and I feel defeated, I just want to give up.

Should I ? Should I rethink my novel, characters and plot ? Should I just not care and follow through ?

How do you come up with new ideas ?

[REC] Is there any LN / novel which the protagonist is an imposter, like the real life legend of Martin Guerre? And of course the readers are aware they are an imposter right from the start too, not some kind of plot twist / spoiler thing.

Or maybe a protagonist living a double life too, like the manga Spy X Family.

So on this app called Kocho, I'm making an adventure visual novel about Baldi's Basics, but I need help with the plot and title.

The player character and main protagonist is Playtime (because she's underrated), and the deuteragonist is It's A Bully (who will for some reason be Playtime's older cousin because I headcanon them as such for some reason).

The name of the visual novel is still pending, but I want the plot to involve Playtime as the star and being heroic. Problem is, I don't know how she'll be heroic!

Any ideas on the plot and title?

Edit: As mentioned before, this will be an ADVENTURE-genre visual novel. No romance or anything. But it will be 13+ because it'll have mild language (only up to "crap" and not the f bomb) and some violence with mild blood.

What does bad writing in a romance novel look like to you? Do you have writing dealbreakers? Do you still enjoy a book with not so great writing if the story/plot is interesting and dynamic enough?

Need help finding a mystery thriller novel. The novel is from a series of books with an inspector as the main character. I don't remember the name of the author, book or character. However, I remember the brief plot which I have entered in the post. Thanks

A man walks into a bar with his kid. Asks a stranger (who is also the main character of story) to look after the kid while he tends to some business outside. When he goes out, someone from a car shoots him and rides off. The stranger/main character swears revenge. The man who walks into the bar may have left the kid with the stranger or just left him in the bar. The main character is an inspector or private investigator, I don't remember exactly.
