With all these discussions going on about the nuclear family, I can't think of a more relevant film to watch than "The Farewell" (2019)

Recently a lot of people have been insisting that the nuclear family is the ideal model for family structure.

However, it is interesting that the idea of the nuclear family has really only been around for about 100 years now. Up until the Industrial Age, it wasn't even possible for a married couple and their kids to function as an isolated social unit.

If you haven't seen The Farewell yet, it's free to stream on Amazon Prime. It follows Awkwafina as she floats between the pros and cons of two different family models: the nuclear family (USA) and the extended family (China). Awkwafina's grandma gets terminal cancer, and because of Chinese family culture, they decide that they aren't going to tell her. So the family throws a quick wedding together in China to give everyone a chance to say goodbye without letting the Grandma know she is about to die.

Perhaps one of the most interesting cinematography choices in the film is the sparse use of the closeup. Most shots in the movie play out in the wide, with many family members packed into the frame. Even awkward, private conversations happen against the visual backdrop of family. I thought this was an interesting contrast to the American style of films about family dynamics (Noah Baumbach, Little Miss Sunshine, The Godfather), where family dynamics are represented by a series of individual self-contained close up shots.

The film also plays with the idea of the connectivity vs individualism through its score. There are many haunting moments when the score floats been passages of the chorus, suddenly to the soloist.

With all the Black Lives Matter, socialism vs capitalism discussions going on, I can't think of a more beautiful & timely film that explores both sides of this with compassion. If you like Ozu, you'll really like this film.

For more details on this, here are some of these ideas fleshed out in essay form:

In the 2019 film The Farewell (Chinese grandmum) why does Billi have big red spots on her back??

The protagonist girl Billi, after getting a massage, has a scene where she shows her bare back and it is covered in big red spots. What the HECKKKKK are those??? They seem to trigger some kind of phobia in me. Are they something that the massage left behind? What in hell's name was that massage if so?

Edit - Also, I saw this movie & Dying To Survive within last week. Felt Dying to Survive >>> The Farewell. What do you think? The original This American Life podcast was much better than the movie imo.

[TOMT][film shot]- What type of shot is this? From The Farewell (2019)

Hi, I am analysing this movie for my high school English class and while we did go through film techniques a while ago, I can't seem to find what type of shot this is.
https://imgur.com/a/EtObIsy
I tried googling it but I can't seem to find an exact definition. The closest is a mid/medium shot but I'm not sure if it counts because this shot captures her whole body. Does that still count as a mid shot or is there another name for that? Thank you :)

"Avengers: Endgame" no longer has the largest PTA of 2019, having lost the title to a small film called "The Farewell." Biggest flop confirmed?

Even if it out-grosses "Avatar," the fact that it lost the PTA record to an A24 drama is just woeful. Marvel Studios may even have to cancel their presentation at the San Diego Comic-Con, so that they wouldn't need to deal with back-to-back "Incredible Hulk"-level flops.

Cranjis' Opinion: farewell to Marc, the underperforming(?)/misued(?)/misunderstood(?) Laker

When we first got Marc, I was excited. After digging through his film and data, it was clear he was a strong floor spacer that could add playmaking to a team possessing very little playmaking and defensively was a less mobile but impactful defender. From what I could tell, the general perception around him was hopeful and positive.

Fast forward to now, and that sentiment has shifted dramatically by many. And I'm not sure they're wrong. But I want to dig deeper to investigate.

Did he stink? Was his misused? Is he just misunderstood?

A little of each. And I'll take the time to be nuanced here in a way that's harder to do on twitter.

In order to evaluate Marc and say he was disappointing or not, we have to have a baseline. No, not the extreme "coming to OUR team fixes everything" attitude a lot of folks tend to have with new players coming in, despite that not being the case for a lot of players season after season.

Let's be realistic. What should we have been expecting? And what did we get?

Spacing

Marc was 14th of 65 centers in our 3PT Spacing per 75 possessions stat among guys with 500+ minutes played in the 2019-20 season. He was 15th of 71 centers this past season.

He wasn't out there making 5 3s per game. No center is. He was hitting 1.9 per 75 possessions (I use 75 instead of 100 since it's much closer to an average starter's possessions played offensively in a game). Vucevic (2.8), Porzingis (2.7), along with KAT & Horford (2.6) were some of the top centers last season.

Brook Lopez in 2017-18 topped this at 2.4, but Marc put up the best performance of any center other than him in our 2013-21 database.

When we consider performance against shot quality with our 3PT Shot Making metric or even just 3PT%, Marc's A grades in both vastly outperform anything LA has had at the center position.

If we look at his 3PT Shot Making, 3PT Gravity/75, and 3PM/75, only 7 other Centers in the NBA this past season matched his mark. He was supposed to be good at this, and he was good at this. Not in a gamebreaking way individually, but about as well as you can do without getting a stud center.

So if you're thinking "well defenses still would help off him to defend the rim against Bron & AD," remember that defenses should rotate to defend the rim, then rotate behind that help to take away shots from Marc and whoever else. The presence of a normal NBA rotation is not the same as defenders absolutely leaving a guy alone all game long on the perime

Farewell to the "Syaitan Yang Sebenar" series

https://preview.redd.it/5ui51q22vld81.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=031bcda13c55c27b08024eb128b2e3fe7eb20655

Hi fellow Malaysians. I hope you can read to the end.

Thanks for your support for this series. It has only been a while, but I think this series has reached its purpose on this sub, which is to raise awareness on what is the more important issue to be solved in this country, or in my favorite term, ketuk-ketuk hati. Even if only one more person becomes aware of the situation, then awareness has risen by one person. It may not be a lot, but it is better than nothing. I'm not God ok, I cannot solve everything.

Going forward, there will be no more "Syaitan Yang Sebenar" comic on r/Malaysia. I have reached to this decision based on these factors:

  1. The comic has already reached its purpose on this sub.
  2. I don't want to chase away the haters from this sub by over-posting. Doing so would disable us from educating them about the issue. We don't want to alienate them, we want them to understand.

I'm not sure yet if I will continue to post "Negeri Yang Aman" instead to this sub. Although it's a very positive comic about normal people living normal lives, some of us still think it's a blasphemy. They might still runaway from this sub. So I'll leave that up to the mods since I don't have the stats. Even if they allow to, I will probably only post it once a week.

The following SYS and NYA series will continue to live on normally in my own profile, so you don't have to follow me, you can just check my feed from time-to-time to find new material. It is now your turn to spread the awareness and educate your circle. I'm playing my part as the supplier of materials to spark discussions that you can use in addition to many other materials available in the world. I will also post to Twitter when necessary. Right now I want them to focus on #tangkapazambaki so I won't distract them with other stuff.

Thank you for standing up to human rights.

Klaus (2019) - A fantastic film & Norm MacDonald’s last movie role

It’s that time of the year and my wife and I are getting into the Christmas moves. As we rewatched Klaus from 2019, we were quickly greeted by the sound of Norm MacDonald’s unmistakeable voice playing the role of the smart-alec, sarcastic, hilariously witty boat captain Mogens. I won’t get into a whole tangent on the film itself, because it’s a phenomenal movie in every way I can think of and I think it’s going to stand the test of time as a classic Christmas movie. What I really came here to say is watching Klaus this year really hit me in the feels as it’s my first time watching the movie since we lost this legend and comedic genius.

If you’ve never seen Klaus, check it out. I think you’ll like it; Norm’s character Mogens is hilarious and his performance really enriches the story. Rest easy, Norm MacDonald; he is sorely missed!
