ΒΏDid anthropologists draw any conclusions about the Gombe Chimpanzee War?

First post ever in reddit!

I've been reading about the Gombe Chimpanzee War, a conflict between communities of chimpanzees in Tanzania. Jane Goodall, the ethologist that observed the conflict and the behavior of these groups, was shocked to see the "darker side" of the chimpanzees: cannibalistic infanticide, chimps celebrating the assassination of fellow members, limb dismemberment, etc.

Was there a discussion among anthropologists about how this could be related to ancient hominids? Or was this only of interest to primatologists/biologists?

Are there still anthropologists in the field studying/living among indigenous people in the Amazon?

I think I'd read that government agencies/NGOs are trying to limit contact to these tribes because of disease and other reasons but wondering if they still allow some anthropologists to study their culture/live among them and if so if there are currently any anthropologists studying indigenous people in the Amazon. Also if there are good books on studying/living among these cultures that are less academic and more about what it's like to be an anthropologist in the field. I read Daniel Everett's book recently and was really fascinated by it and want to learn more not just about the cultures but also the process, difficulties, logistics, etc about actually doing field research in such a remote place. Thanks

Robyn and the anthropologists

I’m rewatching SW since I skimmed or skipped the middle seasons. Anyway the anthropologists are there and they are talking about marriage and children, and the man is saying how many people don’t feel the need to get married anymore. I’m her talking head, Robyn says that she doesn’t want her kids to hear this and think it’s ok to live with someone you are committed to but not be β€œlegally married”. Uhhhhhhhhh - that’s 3 of the wives in this family! She doesn’t say β€œspiritually married” or even just β€œmarried”. She’s so annoyingly dumb. She also says she doesn’t care what other people do with their private lives but she doesn’t want her own kids to live like that. This just reinforces my initial thought that the only reason she was so supportive of Mariah coming out is because it wasn’t her own child. If one of her children came out as gay she would send them to a conversion camp IMO.

Anthropologists, what are your thoughts on the 2021 β€œDune” movie?

After seeing this movie, there is plenty to ponder. From white saviorism, colorism, exploitation of peoples and natural resources, colonialism and imperialism, islamic mysticism, Messiah stories, and the main characters fascination with the planets indigenous people, there is a lot. I think plenty can be said from the plot, the subjects, and the production/marketing, as well as commentary from the original 1960s source material. I myself have a bachelors of science in anthropology so I do have some background. I think the movie does some things well and has some good things to say, and also fall short on messages and ends up reinforcing certain ideas it maybe shouldn’t. Wanted to hear other anthropology-oriented thoughts!

Advice for potential immigration outside of the US as an anthropologist

First post here. I'm 24 years old and will be graduating with my BS in anthropology, concentration in archaeology, this December at the latest. I'm working as a curation intern at a lab funded by the DoD's legacy program, essentially creating 3D printed replicas of prehistoric, indigenous, and pre-colonial contact artifacts for Uncle Sam. I speak French and Spanish at an intermediate level but don't have a set country in mind for immigrating to. If I were to get my master's degree once leaving the US which country would be the best for this that would also have a good job market for anthropologists and curators? TIA!

What are your thoughts on the names for linguistic and cultural groupings that anthropologists use for Native Americans? Are there any common terms you find particularly annoying and would prefer people avoid?

I’m referring to groups like Iroquoian, Muskogean, Siouan, Algonquian, Caddoan, Numic, and so on. I’ve encountered Oceti Sakowin and Haudenosaunee people talking about their dislike of the words β€œSioux” and β€œIroquois”, respectively, so I’d imagine some of that probably carries over to the language families. And I can also see how Pawnee, Wichita, or Arikara people might get annoyed at their language being called β€œCaddoan” when they don’t belong the Caddo Nation.

In addition to terms you dislike, are there any alternatives you’d prefer non-Natives use when describing these linguistic or cultural groupings? I know some peoples in the Arctic have pushed for Inuit-Yupik-Unangan to replace the language family with a slur in its more popular name, but I’m not aware of other proposals if they exist.

Who are the Most Prominent Medical Anthropologists Studying Psychedelics?

Who are some of the most credible or noteworthy medical anthropologists who focus on medicinal or ritualized use of psychedelic substances? I have found some ethnobotanical literature on the subject, but when I look at anthropology programs across the US, almost no professors seem to indicate that this topic is a specialty of theirs. I find this perplexing, because there is so much buzz around this topic at the moment, especially in neuroscience and psychology, and this is a topic that is very much relevant to discussions around traditional medicine, spirituality, and indigeneity. From my vantage point, noteworthy scholars who study psychedelics tend to be a bit more insular, being more reputable in circles revolving around psychedelics themselves than in anthropological circles. Can anybody shed light on this particular question? It would be greatly appreciated.

Who Are All The Most Essential Cultural Anthropologists That Every Advanced Student Should Read and Know?

After finishing off school I plan on dedicating a year to reading cultural anthropology's lineage. Y'know I'll read the old guys to the most influential newer guys and that will be a monster task. I suspect reading one book per major character will be the way to go but Im open to suggestions.

For example, Clifford Geertz - The Interpretation of Cultures is on my list. Franz Boas and Margaret Mead is too but I have yet to file out a long comprehensive lists of major names and their major works and to learn their major concepts.

I hope to read them all and gain an opinion and understanding of how I may like to pursue research of my own style and learn the important terms/concepts for possibly pursuing higher education in the future or at the very least learn something new and hopefully relevant.

What can you recommend to a budding student?
