Both parties were unified by their semi-literacy.
Ghutsul Pakh was an ambitious young man in need of gold and fame. His father's sudden rise to fame and influence had made the family no richer. Ghutsul needed to make a name for himself. He needed for others to view him as strong and famous. Otherwise, he'd be killed by usurpers once his father had died. He worried about the future and sought glory at any cost.
He listened to the priest read the letter. It requested men and whatever other support was available for a looming northwestern invasion. Ghutsul hated priests. He resented how smug they were when they read things. They always seemed so sure about things. Every one of them could tell how Ghutsul was illiterate, and Ghutsul was ashamed. He was only too happy to leave this old life behind to join a new band of fighters.
The sounds of the valley echoed around him as he floated downriver in a small barge. Others joined him along the way, each man seeking glory and wealth. The sun beat down on them, and a single cloud dotted the pale blue sky. The river was icy cold, and it flowed high from the glaciers' summer melt. Ghutsul had been hesitant before, but now he knew he had made the right decision.
Does anyone sense tension or some sort of condescending tone to Heatjer amd Terek's relationship? I noticed it before they got married and have noticed it again, a couple of times, during their honeymoon clips on Instagram. I can't put my finger on it. Obviously, they over do it with just about everything and their expressions of "love" towards each other. I just sense there is something bubbling under the surface. Like a bully behind a smile coming from both of them.

DIRECTIVE 2313 - INTEGRATION OF THE AGRICULTURAL REGIONS
The floodplains of the Terek river to the East are designated as essential food and supply production zones, and their annexation, resettlement, and or pacification are essential to the Legion. By Komandir Khadzhiyev's order, these regions are to be seized by vanguard of 2-ya Gvardiya, with support from Grozny Militsiya. Warlords and bandits are to be driven towards the South where possible, while locals and small communities are to be informed of their annexation into the Legion. They shall be given protectorate status until core Agricultural Cadres are dispatched at end of year. Upon resistance, locals shall be drafted into Industrial or Youth Cadres and sent to the interior. We are Legion.
Yuri was pretty happy for once. The Protectorates had already formed several Militsiya battalions to be deployed into the Western Terek Flood Plain, which limited the amount of shooting that Yuri would have to dodge. Already, the new Infrastructural Cadres were laying down gravel to form basic roads. Life in the Militsiya was going better than it normally did. That was cause for alarm.
The ambush was quick, a handful of bandits hoping to make off with Legion equipment. They had come out of the long grass to the side of the dirt road with submachine guns. Yuri brought his rifle to bear while simultaneously falling backwards into the far side of the road embankment. With a crack the bandit on the other side of the truck found out that 7.62x58mmR was very capable of passing through the wooden sides of an old truck. Yuri bolted his rifle, swinging it to the bandit trying to hijack the truck behind his, crack, the truck would need a new windscreen, maybe seats, but besides that it was safe. The bandits disappeared as quickly as they had emerged, fleeing back into the tall grass. Squad gunners opened up with their machineguns into grass, likely getting a few of them, but the rest disappeared into the evening.
The march started again, and Yuri was back to daydreaming, what it would be like to have one of those nice Militsiya day jobs, maybe a protectorate administrator, but nothing too high, he enjoyed not having many responsibilities.
