A team of astronomers has identified a disrupted galaxy resembling a giant tadpole, complete with an elliptical head and a long, straight tail, about 300 million light-years away from Earth. The galaxy is one million light-years long from end to end, ten times larger than the Milky Way.

My favorite Hubble picture ever: the Tadpole Galaxy (while the galaxy itself is cool, I think I mainly love the faraway little ones behind it). What's yours?

Arp 188 and the Tadpole's Tail: Its eye-catching tail is about 280,000 light-years long -- more than 2 times the diameter of the Milky Way -- and features massive, bright blue star clusters. The tail was created because another galaxy passed near it [2500x2025]
