Quick Surface Laptop Go appreciation post.

I bought the 8gb Memory, 128gb SSD version for $574USD.

Firstly the keyboard is awesome, feels great, was used to typing on it almost instantly which is good because i'll be using this laptop 90% for writing and watching lectures, the other 10% for entertainment (Movies, Youtube, Twitch, Games)

Secondly I personally think the size of the screen and resolution is perfectly fine, I dont mind the extra black bars when watching videos, and most videos look just as good as 1080p if I dont get too close to the screen.

Thirdly I thought the games i'd be able to play would be terrible, However I downloaded a few games which ill list now that ran perfectly.

GTA San Andreas 60fps solid, good graphics, very playable.

Prison Architect 60fps solid, great graphics, very playable.

COD Black Ops 2 Zombies, 40-60fps, looks good enough for sure, its playable surprising.

I am extremely surprised COD Black Ops 2 was playable, when I first loaded into a map it freezes/stutters for like 15 seconds but then runs very smooth going from 40-60fps which is more than playable, dont really notice a difference.

Great laptop so far, enjoying it a lot.

Acer Swift 3 vs Surface Laptop Go (for college)

so i'll be starting college in a couple months and i'll be needing an actual laptop, not just my old school chromebook. i've been spending a lot of time researching budget laptops since im gonna be pretty reliant on this thing, and i think i've narrowed it down to the Acer Swift 3 and the Surface Laptop Go.

The Swift has a better processor (i think) and backlit keys. i've also heard it's decent for gaming. it's also cheaper than the Surface and customizable. thing is, the screen kinda sucks and the keyboard is good but not better than the Surface.

The Surface has a much better display and keyboard, but has no backlit keys and the processors a bit worse which means i won't be able to do much gaming on it. it's also got better battery life, beats out the Swift in terms of build quality and is just way prettier imo.

i have no idea what to choose and was wondering if anybody could help me decide lmao. if you can't tell, i don't know much about technology but these, i believe, are the two best choices out there. if you guys could help me make a decision or even just recommend a different laptop, id love to hear it!

UPDATE: USB-C charging details for Surface Pro 7, Surface Laptop 3, and Surface Go.

Shout out to the employees who let me do this! You know who you are, I know you're reading this!

To everyone else who read my initial post, here's my followup. I was very negligent last time and didn't even test the SL3 as I wasn't interested in that machine. I've come to atone for my sins. I spent about half a hour with each machine to drain the battery enough to get a more accurate charge rate. I couldn't install anything, so I opened YouTube in Edge, and welp... booted up Candy Crush! I let the battery drain down to about 80% to do my measurements.

Now, with that out of the way, on to the gory details! So it sounds like the the new SP7 is shipping with a 60ish watt charger now. From what I've been told, the charger isn't anything special (no they didn't have one easily accessible to show me). It's likely the same 65w (15v @ 4a) charger that's been sold by Microsoft for a while now. All that's actually changed is the battery subsystem that allows the new devices to charge at the higher wattage (I think previous generation SPs were capped at 30-45w?). I was also told that the 13" SL3 and the SP7 have more or less the same design internals. All that's changing is the form factor so technically I didn't have to run tests on both. I did anyways...

Setup:

  • SP7, 13" SL3, SG - Specs here aren't really relevant, I'm almost certain they all charge the same in their respective families. I didn't get a chance to try the 15" SL3.

  • Motorola SPN5791A (USB BC protocol, 5v @ 1.15a) - Retail USB-A charger for the original MotoX 2014. This charger represents legacy non USB-PD chargers that everyone more or less has a drawer full of. While not technically a 'trickle charger' perse, it's effectively one in this day and age.

  • Google G1000-US (USB-PD Protocol, 5v @ 3A, 9v @ 2A) - Standard charger for Google Pixel 2 (and I think the Pixel 1 and 3 as well). Your modern average phone charger, doesn't support higher voltage rails.

  • Anker PowerPort Atom PD2 (USB-PD protocol, 5V @ 3A, 9V @ 3A, 15V @ 3A, 20v @ 3A) your "luxury" charger on the market. 2 USB-PD ports, able to supply 60w to one port or 30w to both.

  • Anker PowerPort 60w (USB-PD protocol, 5V @ 3A, 9V @ 3A, 15V @ 3A, 20v @ 3A), this is Anker's Gen1 PD charger, I had it on me, might as well try it...

  • Anker Powercore 10,000 PD (USB-PD protocol, 5V @ 3A, 9V @ 2A, 15v @ 1.2A) This is the only device I had that had a 15v rail and no 20v rail. This will be relevant in the conclusion

Please help, completely out of my depth: Recently fell in love with OneNote; looking for something to allow me to use it more accessibly - looking at Surface Pro 3, 4, as well as the Go; already have a laptop.

Hey guys, so I wanted something for about $200 - $300, which seemingly leaves the SF4 out of my price range (based off the prices I'm seeing online).

But since it's about a hundred dollar difference, I may be willing to shell $400 - $450 if you guys think it's worth it.

So some notes:

  • Definitely mainly want this to use for OneNote.
  • Though it's mainly for OneNote now, it easily could become my main laptop eventually.
  • I've used my friends Surface Pro before, and I've always admired how lightweight is was. My current laptop weighs about 10 lbs (or at least feels like it), and I have to carry it on my back(pack) everyday to college.
  • What size should I get, in terms of space/RAM? I'm a novice when it comes to this stuff. Additionally, also consider bullet #2, if this would eventually become my main laptop what model and size/RAM is the best investment?

Thanks for the help guys, I'm completely out of my depth when it comes to technology!

Hard time choosing between Surface Go and Surface Laptop

Hi, I'm looking for a light computer for university and I really love surface. But I dont have a huge budget so I'm trying to choose between Surface Go and Surface Laptop. Surface Go seems nice and cheap, BUT it's an intel pentium and it's first price so i'm worried that after 1year the surface Go will start to slow down a lot. It happens really often with first price computer and I want something that can't last at least 2-3years. So any feed back on that ? Also they have the option to take 8go of ram which seems cool but unnecessary for an intel pentium. For the surface laptop it seems perfect for a computer who can last 3year at least and have good perfomances, but I don't know if I take 4 or 8go with it. Because if I take 8go I can't take the option of an M3 processor and I have to take a I5 which is really expensive. So do I have to take 8go or is 4go enough to not slow down after 1year, 18month ? Any advice is welcome, thank you for your time.

Ps: English is not my native languages, sorry for bad english

Would love be to pull the trigger on the SL2 but am concerned about the lack of a USB-C port. My phone and earbuds use Usb-c so it would be convenient to use one connecter. I am also a fan of the chrome OS and Google ecosystem as I am a pixel 3xl owner. Would love some suggestions.

I was also looking into purchasing a note taking device like a surface go (without the type cover) and use it solely as a tablet to take lecture notes. I thought it’d be nice because I can have the notes on all devices thru the cloud.

Does anyone else do this or is this just overkill?

Are there any other note taking devices out there that’s more niche?

Played with some laptops tonight (Surface Go - 1.15lbs)

I was watching YT videos of hands-on experience with MSFT's new Surface Go, a 10in tablet/laptop thingy. I heard the sucker weighed 1.15lbs (w/out the keyboard) and being the ever minimalist I started to salivate at how much my pack weight would drop (https://lighterpack.com/r/e66a50). So I headed over to Best Buy in hopes they had it in stock and to play with some Chromebooks, namely to see if I could successfully type on the thing or would it be relegated to largely a tablet.

But first, a little about my preferences and I... I have average sized hands (5'9", 180lbs), nothing special. I type ~75wpm, not hunting and pecking, but not entirely typing properly either with some glances at the keyboard. At work and home I use laptop keyboards and trackpads 24/7, I don't use a traditional USB mouse and keyboard. I work in IT and am on laptops all day and night. I generally prefer the key spacing on laptops that are in the 12in arena with most of my experience on a Dell E7240 and Dell E7270. Both of them feel natural to me with good key travel as well. I also own an older Dell XPS 14 that is fine too, but still not preferred.

So back to the Surface Go... I'll get right into it, the keyboard was too cramped. Using an online test my WPM dropped to 60 and I was missing stuff left and right. Perhaps I would eventually get used to it, but for my half hunting style, I did not think so. I will say the key travel was certainly less than my E7270, but totally acceptable. The keyboard did not flex too much, and the trackpad was big enough for me not to notice. I will also say after about 7-8 browser tabs open, the low end model with the 4GB of RAM and 64GB eMMC hard drive started to stutter, so if I were forced to buy one, I'd step it up. tl;dr, light little laptop, but too cramped and would turn into a glorified tablet for me that I could put up with emailing Mom once a week on.

I then played with the larger Surface Pro. I'd be much better with that larger keyboard, totally fine. Back to my normal WPM score @ https://www.typingtest.com/index2.html It would be a little more frustrating that a traditional laptop typing on it with it's infinity hinge while typing/surfing in bet, but probably doable. Typing on a desk, not all that different than a regular laptop.

Next up were various Chrom

Good 2-in-1 laptop other than a Surface Go

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Hi, I am in high school and I need a good laptop for school and for personal use, not a surface go. I say this because I need to have a solid keyboard with more laptop than tablet. I’ve looked at the HP Pavilion, which looks good other than the reported complaints about moderate battery life, but I wanted to get some more recommendations.

Total budget and country of purchase: United States, $600 budget

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2 in 1, good battery, best specs if possible

How important is weight and thinness to you? Want it to be relatively light and thin, though this isn’t very important

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15 in

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be using Fusion 360, probably some games

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft, web games, stuff like that. Gaming settings aren’t as important to me

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good backlit keyboard, good build quality, touch-screen, has at least one USB-A and USB-C port, with SD card reader.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I just need a good laptop that I can use at school and at home that will last me all day. Thanks!

Stellaris on Surface Laptop 4?

Hello,
I am playing Stellaris for a some years now (started when there were 3 types of FTL to choose from at the beginning) and I absolutly love that game. For some reason it was that 4X space game that no other could provide for me (like GalCiv e.g.). Paradox did a great job here.

Sadly I will be away from home for four months now. Since there is this pandemic situation I will spend at lot of afternoons and evenings at a hotel room - even some of the weekends because it is a long distance home and my wife usually is going to work on saturdays. Therefor there could be some time to play stellaris.

Since I wont carry my whole gaming computer with me, I am wondering if Stellaris (all DLC enabled but not mods) runs decently on a Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 (powered by an Intel I5 and only 8GB of RAM). Does anyone have experience with that kind of device?

One Surface Pro 2017; or a 14-15" laptop and a Surface Go 64GB?

I am a student at Uni, and looking for two things: A practical digital notetaking device; and a laptop that I can program on, view scripts and later write my thesis on.

Now I got two options:

  1. 790€ Surface Pro i5 2017 + 80€ Type Cover + 70€ Pen = 940€ (12", a compromise between two worlds)

  2. 470€ Surface Go + Type Cover Bundle + 70€ Pen = 540€ Go (10" perfect tablet size)

+ 400-500€ Laptop = 940-1040€ (14-15" laptop)

I am inclined to option 2), because then I got two devices that each do their job well. Maybe I can even view the Script or Tasksheet on the larger laptop, while putting the Go onto the laptop's keyboard for writing on it as a digital paper.

Or is there an advantage I am missing, from having everything in one device? People that have used their Pro for an extended time seem to be so happy about it.

But I personally noticed, that it is too large and heavy as a nice tablet, and if I start Eclipse for coding, the screen is slightly too small for that task.

The Go still has the right size for note taking.

One last thing though is the battery life of course. The Pro lasts for hours and hours, while the Go lasts for 5-7 hours as I have heard. So maybe I will need a powerbank for it...

Looking for a new laptop, thinking about getting a Surface Go, worth a buy?

I've had an Asus Transformer (one of those with a detachable screen) for just over four years now and looking to get something new before I head to grad school in the fall. There's nothing wrong with my current laptop, still perfectly usable, just want something new

I'm not someone who needs a powerful laptop. I mostly use my Asus for browsing the internet, typing up stuff and putting together projects using Microsoft Office and Adobe InDesign. I occasionally game on Steam, but nothing I play is that intensive (the "heaviest" games I have are probably Psychonauts and the first Portal)

I like portability and efficiency above all else,, definitely not wanting to haul around some huge laptop. I haven't done too much research, but this this Surface Go seems to tick the boxes of what I'm looking for

Would this be a good way to go, or are there other options I should be looking at?

Surface pro 6 or Surface Laptop or Surface GO

Hello! So hoping you guys can help me make a choice.

I currently have a surface pro 4, and for all its flaws, I kinda love it. I think it's pretty slick, fast and works great for me.

I don't use it that much as a tablet, just for watching Netflix and ocassionally for work. I lost the pen but before that I used to draw on it every other week and use it to take notes.

I have my own small business which requires to travel often so I would like something portable. I work with Google drive, Excel, social media, sometimes Photoshop and Lightroom and Canva. I use OneNote often for notes on whatever I am reading or if I take an online class. I already finished college but I think I might get a second degree once my business is running on automatic in a year or two.

I used to play games like Civ 5 and Football manager but hardly got the time now. Tho I would like to be able to use it for that too. I don't really game anything heavier than that.

I am looking to get a new main laptop. Problem with my SP4 is that it looks damaged and when I meet with clients I feel I leave a bad impression behind.

I was thinking I would get the SP6 but I thought, maybe I should get the laptop instead. Especially considering I already have a functioning surface pro.

What do you guys think?

My main concerns are keyboard and display size. Go's price is really attractive tho. I may also just buy Surface Pro 6, but I don't really need this much power (or do I?) and don't want to spend 400$ more (compared to Go).
