Yes, it's been five years, February 7, 2016, since Peyton Manning rode off in to the sunset a champion, leading the Broncos to a 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers (well OK, the defense led them to the win, but Manning was out there too) in the only Super Bowl not designated with Roman numerals. Von Miller and the Broncos defense stifled MVP Cam Newton and the 15-1 Panthers, sacking Cam seven times and forcing four turnovers.
The Panthers defense played well too, holding Denver to just 194 yards. This was a boring game, right up there with the recent Patriots-Rams game and the Bears-Colts and Steelers-Seahawks games from the 2000s.
But not one that lacked for interest. TV ratings were sky-high, it remains the highest-rated TV program ever on the CBS network.
Since then, things have gone down hill for both franchises. But five years ago, they were on top of the heaps.
