For me personally it's rare that if i like a bands music i actually delve into their solo stuff because to be honest, 90% of the time it does not even come close to the original band but with something as auteured and finely polished as Steely Dan i should have figured i would not be dissapointed so recently i listened to The Nightfly by Donald Fagen and it just sounds like a fantastic continuation on the Steely Dan sound, his other solo albums are great too but that one in specific is just like an additional Steely Dan album to delve into so if you haven't yet, please listen to this album.
I would have come and asked for recommendations when I was doing the project, but since I finished I wanna hear what your favorite example of figurative language from a Steely Dan song is.

Hello all, just wondered as a little convo starterβ¦
Whatβs everyoneβs favourite ending to a song? For me itβs the βthings I miss the mostβ. That Am11 is just hard hitting on another level and punches me in the back of the head in its context. Thoughts?
With Donald Fagen writing every song, and Walter Becker producing every song + reportedly playing on them as well, (with writing credits on one song to boot), is it fair to sort of lump this album in with the rest of the discog?
I see some fans already canonize The Nightfly, but Iβd argue that that album has less reason to hold that status, namely because of the lack of Walter. I think most people just like The Nightfly more, and so it gets more recognition.
I also think Kamakiriad is a strong and recognizable βmissing linkβ between their sound on Gaucho and their sound on Two Against Nature.
Anyway. Snowbound is an amazing song. So good.
Don't get me wrong - Cioccolata's beatdown is glorious, especially in the anime. The SFX, Giorno's WRRYYYYY in the middle, everything was wonderful. When Cioccolata's beatdown is brought up in discussions about JoJo, it's often compared to Jotaro's beatdown of Steely Dan in Part 3, and sometimes cited as being a "better" version of that one.
I disagree. As wonderful as Cioccolata's beatdown was, I feel like it lacked a key element that made Steely Dan's beatdown much more satisfying for me. And that was the personal connection.
Jotaro's hatred of Steely Dan was personal. This smug prick was holding his grandfather hostage, bullied, and humiliated him constantly, and took advantage of the Joestars. His petty bullying and condescension was all too familiar to real life. When he got the living shit beaten out of him for 20 seconds, I had the biggest grin on my face. He was an intimate, personal rival to Jotaro, and I would not have been satisfied if he had gotten anything less than what he got.
On the other hand, Cioccolata is a sadistic piece of shit, sure, but past that...? Not really anything else. He has no personal connection to Giorno. That intimate, personal hatred towards him from Giorno was nonexistent, where one of the best parts of the Steely Dan beatdown was the buildup towards it, with Jotaro's gradually building excitement paying off in the climax. Cioccolata could have gotten off with something less than the 30-second MUDA, but I'd still probably be satisfied. I can't say the same for Steely Dan.
There's also the fact that Cioccolata is so cartoonishly evil, it's impossible to hate him on the personal level you hate Steely Dan with. Most people can recognize a petty bully, but crooked surgeons as cartoonishly evil as Cioccolata are exceedingly rare.
I guess it's the same case as the classic Umbridge vs. Voldemort case. Voldemort/Cioccolata is clearly more evil, but Umbridge/Steely Dan is a more personal, intensely hatable threat. The fact that there was a personal threat and connection between Jotaro and Steely Dan made his much more memorable and satisfying than Cioccolata's.
My pick would be Black Friday
Was having a conversation about these two bands with a friend. I got the feeling Steely Dan fans mostly dislike DMB. He disagreed. Who is right?
so far i know aja, gaucho, and canβt buy a thrill
Hear me out... they're touring next summer with Steve Winwood (who would also be cool to have on the farm), and on their EVENTS tour date list, there's one concert for Memphis but it's listed as TBD.
I know it's not the same without Walter Becker (RIP), but they have the hits and they have the jams to bring a good time to the Farm.
What says you?
I never really paid much attention to drummer Peter Erskine before, but after watching this concert a couple of times, his skill and precision are just incredible. It's on YT if you haven't seen it Cheers.
Iβm most interested in Gaucho Two Against Nature, but want to complete the full collection. Currently, I have Aja, Gaucho, CTE, CBAT, Royal Scam, Katy Lied, and Pretzel Logic.
Gaucho, Countdown to Ecstasy, Canβt Buy a Thrill, Two Against Nature, The Royal Scam, Pretzel Logic, Katy Lied, Everything Must Go would be my order of interest I suppose.
Edit: thanks to @dahlstroyer, all I need now is Gaucho and Two Against Nature! Also wouldnβt mind Everything Must Go ;)
Edit2: Gaucho has been found!! Thanks @elijah3748. Anyone have Two Against Nature or Everything Must Go?
I was listening to Chicago and realized that there has really been no other group that sounds like them. The orchestration and song composition in their popular hits pretty much define a genre that is unique to itself. I've often thought the same of Steely Dan.
I discovered them about a year ago and Iβve been obsessed with them ever since. I feel like Iβm crazy because I love their music so much.
