Hello everyone, I am working on a pocket knife, the piece i used for the spring holding the bar in place is made out of an old leaf spring that was laying around on the farm of my step-father. I used a hacksaw and files to shape it but after test using it about 30-40 times it has already bent a bit. I know very little about metallurgy so I joined this subreddit hoping that someone could help me out. I thought leaf spring steel was supposed to NOT bend so easily.
Would hardening the steel have a positive effect making it more durable?

I’m cerakoting a machined tool of mine and the way it’s built, I can’t remove all of the parts. They’re all steel or aluminum. My question is, if I have to heat the tool to 300 degrees F, will that destroy or damage the spring steel? i.e. there’s a spring I can’t remove (very small and pinned in place) will it’s spring properties be diminished or destroyed if I hear it to 300 degrees F?
If you want a PEI coated spring steel plate for the Q5, here is one I just bought. It's a near perfect fit. Overhangs by one or two millimeters all the way around.
